  • Patent number: 4717375
Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus for folding diapers (1) and like articles, in which apparatus the article is advanced to a folding station by a conveyor (2). The folding station includes a driven folding roll (4) which co-acts with a counter roll (9) in a manner to feed the article to at least one driven transport roll (11,12). The transport roll guides the forward end (10) of the article (1) onto the cylindrical surface of a folding roll (16,17) co-acting with the folding roll (4) and intended, in a first folding phase, to be driven in a first transport direction through a given distance up towards the upper part of the folding roll and, during a second folding phase, to be driven in the opposite direction (A) and move the forward part of the article down from the aforementioned upper part.

  • Patent number: 4629445
Abstract: A case making machine is provided with an apparatus for folding rear portion of a feeding case blank and the apparatus comprises a claw mechanism for folding the rear portion of the case blank along the folding line. The claw mechanism is rotated at an angular speed which is changed by a cam mechanism operated by a driving source through a drive shaft and a link mechanism. An electromagnetic valve is further provided for controlling the operation of the claw mechanism. The valve is actuated by an electric circuit such that the electromagnetic valve can be operated in synchrony with the advancing speed of the blank. This result is achieved by increasing pulse numbers inputted into the circuit to account for the rise time interval of the electromagnetic valve.

  • Patent number: 4545782
Abstract: This invention provides an apparatus for folding sheet products, such as newspapers or the like, which includes a pair of cooperating fold rolls, a sheet supporting surface located above the fold rolls, a rotatable cage assembly carrying a tucker blade that tucks a sheet product into the nip of the fold rolls during each revolution of the cage assembly, and means mounted on the rotating cage assembly to substantially fill the space between the cage assembly and the sheet supporting surface during the time when the trailing edges of the folded product approach each other as the product is drawn through the fold rolls.

  • Patent number: 4530694
Abstract: To re-orient the position of a sheet, or package of sheets (3), for example after having been folded in a folding former, cut, and transversely folded in a folding knife cylinder, a pair of vertically aligned dish-like plates, or disks (4,5) are moved in an endless transport path. The plurality of such pairs of plates or disks may be provided, each pair being moved in a path by a gear belt (16, 29) driven by a gear or sprocket wheel (20, 30). The plates or disks receive a sheet, or package of sheets (3) therebetween, then are moved towards each other to clamp the sheet therebetween, for example under cam control (25) and a spring (24), and, when the sheets are clamped, additional rotation is supplied to one (4) of the plates or disks, the other (5) being freely rotatable, for example by a stepping motor (37) coupled thereto via a gear transmission and a bushing or sleeve concentric with the shaft driving the sprocket wheel.

  • Patent number: 4391596
Abstract: A folder has at least two transverse paper cutters, each with folding blades for use with a fold jaw cylinder for sheeting and folding paper web coming from a printing press and forwarding the sheets produced to a delivery station. The one or the other transverse cutter (as put into operation on makeready) is used for producing sheet sizes answering to the full or half of the plate cylinder circumference of the printing press. The fold jaw cylinder has tool take-up or fixing positions spaced about its circumference with a spacing equal to half the smaller sheet size to be processed. The fold jaw cylinder is designed to have fixed thereon fold jaws with a spacing therebetween equal to the spacing between the folding blades of the one or the other cutter used at the time and to have fixed thereon scissor or shear cutting knives, running out past its circumference radially and spaced to the back of the jaws (in the direction of running) by half the jaw-to-jaw distance.

  • Patent number: 4338087
Abstract: A folding device for printed continuous webs moving at a high rate of speed. The device includes a pair of cooperating rolls between which the web passes. The rolls carry "working boxes" on the surfaces thereof to perform various folding functions on the moving web. Here the function of concern is the gripping of the web. An element on one roll causes the web to be pushed into open gripping elements on the cooperative roll. A bight is formed in the web at the position of gripping. During the concurrent rotation of the rolls the grippers close on the formed bight. Subsequently it is desired to remove the bight from the opening gripping elements. Simultaneously with the opening of the gripping elements there is provided a positive means for raising the formed bight out of the scope of the jaws. This bight stripper prevents any unnecessary entanglements of the fast moving printed web with the gripping elements during the folding of the web.

  • Patent number: 4272066
Abstract: An apparatus for producing compresses to cover wounds comprises a rotary drum on which a muslin strip having folded-over longitudinal edges is cut and folded crosswise, and a longitudinal folding device mounted after the drum. The drum is designed as a suction roll with cutters distributed over its circumference. The drum jacket has suction rails with extensions connected to a tube leading into the drum and connected to a suction pipe. A counterpiece mounted independently of the drum cooperates with the cutters. The longitudinal folding device has at least a two-arm, preferably a three-arm star shaped collector device which rotates around an axis parallel to the drum axis at the same circumferential speed as the drum itself, and the distance between the arms of the collector device corresponds to the size of the compresses folded on the drum.

  • Patent number: 4260145
Abstract: The disclosed signature handling apparatus is for use with a saddle conveyor which moves signatures with a folded edge up along a path through a series of stations. The apparatus transfers signatures from the saddle conveyor to the infeed conveyor of a signature trimmer in a smooth motion and without abrupt changes in speed or direction. The infeed conveyor to the signature trimmer is located in a plane parallel to and above the path of the saddle conveyor. The apparatus includes a tucker blade mechanism which contacts the folded edge of the signature from below the saddle conveyor. The tucker blade mechanism moves the signature forwardly and upwardly from the saddle conveyor as it moves in a vertical plane through a path which is oblique relative to the saddle conveyor. A gripper finger assembly grips the signature from the tucker blade mechanism and continues the forwardly and upwardly movement of the signature and simultaneously rotates it about an axis parallel to the saddle conveyor.
