  • Patent number: 5815858
Abstract: The futon includes a back deck guided for movement between horizontal and forwardly-inclined positions by rollers engaging in slots of the side frames of the futon. The seat deck is pivotally secured to the forward end of side extensions of the back deck by inter-engaging slots and pins. To convert from a bed position, the seat deck is initially pulled forwardly to locate the rollers in positions in the guide slots for movement of the back deck from the horizontal position to the inclined position. By pivoting the seat deck upwardly and permitting it to slide downwardly relative to the pins, the seat deck is positioned to leverage the back deck into the inclined position upon pivoting the seat deck back towards its horizontal position. The back deck is thus inclined and locked in the inclined position by the engagement of the rollers in extreme ends of guide slots. The seat deck rests on a futon cross piece and is supported along its rear edge by the slot and pin connection with the back deck.

Abstract: A convertible sofa bed which is convertible to provide a sofa or a bed. The convertible sofa bed has a seat which is hinged to a back and supported by a frame. A pivoting pawl, having a bottom end, is attached to the seat near the hinged point. A notch is provided on the back near the hinge which accepts the pawl when the seat is raised. For example, beginning with the convertible sofa bed in the bed position, lift the front of the seat. As the front of the seat is lifted, the gravitational force influences the pawl to hang in a downward direction. The pawl pivots until the bottom end thereof makes contact with the notch. Once the pawl is engaged, the seat is pressed down creating a tension between the notch and the pawl. By continuing to apply leverage to the seat, the back advances upward forming the sofa configuration.

Abstract: A convertible sofa which is convertible to provide a sofa or a bed. The convertible sofa has a seat which is hinged to a back and supported by a frame. For example, beginning with the convertible sofa in the bed position, lift the front of the seat. As the front of the seat is lifted, the gravitational force influences the pawl to hang in a downward direction. The pawl pivots until the tapered edge makes contact with the step. Once contact is achieved, pressing down on the seat creates a tension between the step and the pawl. By continuing to apply leverage to the seat, the back advances upward forming the sofa configuration. To disengage the pawl from the step, on the front edge of the seat thereby is lifted, relieving the stress on the pawl thus allowing the pawl to freely swing downward loosing contact with the step.

  • Patent number: 4365369
Abstract: A three cushion convertible seat-bed is disclosed. A single seat has first and second panels (12,14) for the seat back and seat bottom mounted on a seat base (10) and a third panel (16) pivotally coupled with the seat back. A conversion mechanism (18) includes a quadrant plate (80) which is pivotally supported on the base (10). The lower part of the seat back is rigidly connected (84,86) with the quadrant plate (80) and the rear edge of the seat bottom is pivotally coupled (124) with the quadrant plate so that the three panels can be unfolded from the seat orientation to a bed orientation. A first set of latches (A, B, D) holds the conversion mechanism (18) in the seat orientation and are released sequentially by moving an operating handle (22) in one direction. This same motion of the operating handle (22) causes an actuating means (172,170) to thrust the third panel (16) rearwardly toward the bed orientation as the first and second panels (12,14) are unfolded.

  • Patent number: 4321716
Abstract: This invention relates to convertible seat-bed assemblies. More particularly it relates to such seat-bed assemblies having linkage means supporting the seat and back supports from a base structure for movement between a seating position and a bed position. Because of the use of simple linkage only, this invention is more economical to manufacture and lighter in weight than the prior art convertible seat-beds.

  • Patent number: 4104747
Abstract: A convertible sofa and bed structure comprising a pair of pivotally interconnected frame members. One of the frame members is utilized as a backrest and the other as a seatrest in the seating or sofa position; and both are moveable to aligned horizontal positions in the bed position. An important feature of the structure resides in the fact that operating linkages are positioned outwardly of a zone beneath the frame member which functions as a seatrest. Thereby, the defined zone will provide an unobstructed storage compartment.

  • Patent number: 4048680
Abstract: A sofa bed including a seat and back pivotally connected to each other and mounted to a stationary base by means of a five-bar linkage located at opposite sides of the sofa bed. In the "bed position," the five-bar linkage is in an open or expanded state with the seat and back extending in coplanar relationship in horizontal plane parallel to and above the base. In the "sofa position," the five-bar linkage is closed or collapsed and the seat extends in a horizontal plane and the back extends in an upright inclined position. To actuate the sofa bed between said positions, the seat is grasped at a forward edge portion and slightly raised which activates a second linkage, namely a four-bar linkage, which actuates and controls the five-bar linkage while permitting it to either open or close depending upon the position of the sofa bed to be achieved.
