Copper Patents (Class 514/499)
  • Patent number: 8293282
Abstract: Disclosed is a wood preservative composition comprising micronized copper and copper-amine complex, wherein the copper component of the copper amine complex is from about 5% to about 50% by weight, based upon the total weight of copper in the composition. The copper amine complex serves to avoid wood surface “chalking” that is otherwise attributable to the presence of micronized copper in copper-based slurries used to treat wood products. In addition, the copper-amine complex enhances the antimicrobial efficacy of the composition when used in wood treatment applications by facilitating cell wall penetration of the treated wood.

  • Patent number: 8282951
Abstract: Antimicrobial coatings to protect surfaces and a method of applying such a coating are disclosed. An antimicrobial coating may be applied to a surface, such as the interior surface of a building's exterior wall. The interior surface must be accessed, and then an antimicrobial coating is provided and applied. The antimicrobial coating includes an inorganic antimicrobial additive and a colloidal polymeric medium. The inorganic antimicrobial additive may be silver, platinum, gold, palladium, copper, zinc, boron, or a compound of any of those elements. By including an ultraviolet tracer or color dye additive in the coating, it is possible to detect the coating at any time, provided that the surface is accessed.

  • Patent number: 8221791
Abstract: A silica-based nanoformulation and method is used to treat citrus canker, inhibit the growth of mold and mildew, and add nutrients to soil used for agricultural purposes. The nanotechnology-enabled copper-loaded, silica nanoformulation (CuSiNP/NG) design is a “revolutionary re-invention” of Cu for safe application because it provides a formulation with maximum abundance of ionic Cu, provides sustained and optimal Cu ion release for long-term disease protection, better adherence to plant surfaces and structural surfaces due to gel-based nanostructure of CuSiNG, thus avoiding multiple spray applications and reducing the amount of Cu used in comparison to existing Cu compounds without compromising antibacterial activity.

Abstract: Hybrid strategies generally involve treating biodegradable substrates with preservative compositions having at least two phases in which the metal biocide is distributed among at least the two phases and via equilibrium reactions moves between the two phases. Both phases are caused to contact the substrate in a manner so that the phases are in contact with each other during at least a portion of the treatment. In illustrative embodiments, the first phase is a liquid phase comprising complexed metal biocide dissolved in a liquid carrier, while the second phase comprises particles comprising the metal biocide, often precipitated and/or colloidal particles. The strategies and related compositions, processes, and treatments are hybrid in the sense that the strategies include both heterogeneous (insoluble) and homogeneous metal biocide constituents. Unlike heterogeneous strategies, hybrid strategies are less sensitive to particle size constraints and may use biocide particles with a wider range of particle sizes.

In one embodiment, a nitrate-complexed amino acid composition can comprise a metal, an amino acid ligand, and a nitrate, wherein the amino acid ligand is chelated to the metal forming an amino acid chelate and the nitrate is complexed to the amino acid chelate. In another embodiment, a nitrate-chelated amino acid composition can comprise a metal, an amino acid ligand, and a nitrate, wherein the amino acid ligand and the nitrate are chelated to the metal forming a nitrate-chelated amino acid chelate.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a stabilized metal nano particle solution is disclosed. This method manufactures a metal nano particle solution so as to make a metal substance such as silver, gold, copper, zinc or cobalt into ultra-capsular nano particles. That is to say, this new method is simple and suitable for mass production without requiring any separate reducer putting process at a room temperature while a transition metal nano particle solution is produced. In this method, an alcohol solution including a metal salt solution and a soluble polymer is mixed at a room temperature to make a nano metal particle solution with a particle size of 100 nm or less.

Abstract: A process for preparing a feed supplement that promotes growth in animals by (i) preparing a dry metal carboxylate of formula M(RCOOH)2; (ii) preparing a metal aminoate; and (iii) mixing the dry metal carboxylate and the metal aminoate under conditions that form a complex including the metal carboxylate and the metal aminoate and water, then removing the water to form a dry metal complex of the metal carboxylate and the metal aminoate. When administered to an animal in its feed, a bioavailability of the divalent metal in the dry metal complex is different than the bioavailability of the divalent metal in either the dry metal carboxylate or the metal aminoate alone.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods for the preparation of a free-flowing, storage-stable fatty acid metal salt product by forming a reactive admixture comprising (a) an unsaturated fatty acid glyceride feedstock; and (b) from about 1 mol to about 3 mol of at least one monovalent metal hydroxide or at least one divalent metal hydroxide; and heating the admixture to a temperature at which said fatty acid glycerides saponify to form fatty acid metals salts; wherein said monovalent metal is potassium; and wherein said divalent metal is selected from the group consisting of calcium, copper, magnesium and zinc. The fatty acid glycerides may be saponified in an atmosphere in which the partial pressure of oxygen has been reduced by an amount effective to provide an improvement in storage stability until a free-flowing, storage-stage product is obtained, or prior to saponification, the fatty acid glycerides may blended with a stabilizing oil that promotes storage stability, or both.
