Patent number: 6469057Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, there are provided methods for the in vivo reduction of free radical levels in mammalian subjects in need thereof. In contrast to the inhibitory approach described in the prior art (i.e., wherein the function of the species responsible for free radical production is inhibited), the present invention employs a scavenging approach whereby overproduced free radical is bound in vivo to a suitable free radical scavenger. An exemplary free radical scavenger contemplated for use in the practice of the present invention is a dithiocarbamate-ferrous iron complex. This complex binds to free radicals, forming a stable, water-soluble free radical-containing complex. When administered to a subject afflicted with a disorder associated with free radical overproduction, the water-soluble free radical-containing complex is produced and then filtered through the kidneys, concentrated in the urine, and eventually excreted by the subject, thereby reducing in vivo free radical levels.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2000Date of Patent: October 22, 2002Assignee: MCW Research Foundation, Inc.Inventor: Ching-San Lai

Patent number: 6423351Abstract: The invention provides methods for inhibiting oxidative degradation of pharmaceutical formulations comprising at least one oxidation-susceptible active drug ingredient which methods comprise adding an oxidation-inhibiting amount of a ferrous ion source, preferably in the form of a pharmaceuticalexcipient, to the formulation. The invention further provides pharmaceutical formulations comprising at least one oxidation-susceptible active drug ingredient and an oxidation-inhibiting amount of a ferrous iron source, preferably in the form of a pharmaceuticalexcipient. The invention still further provides for the use of a ferrous ion source as an anti-oxidant in pharmaceutical formulations.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2001Date of Patent: July 23, 2002Assignee: Pfizer Inc.Inventor: Hai Wang

Patent number: 6420312Abstract: An algicide-flocculant solution for use in treating raw water in a municipal water plant to control algae, the algicide-flocculant solution including 25-50 wt % of an acidic flocculant, 0-10 wt % of a polymer flocculant aid, an algicide of essentially copper having a concentration of 0.025-1.25 wt % in the form of a water soluble capper salt, and balance water. Uniform mixing of the flocculant into the raw water simultaneously uniformly mixes the algicide of the algicide-flocculant solution into the raw water. The acidic flocculant is preferably aluminium sulfate, iron sulfate, iron chloride or mixtures thereof. The water soluble copper salt is preferably copper sulfate, copper chloride, copper nitrate, copper acetate or mixtures thereof. Moreover, the flocculant aid is a high molecular weight quaternary amine such as diallyldimethylammonium chloride.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2001Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: Bay Chemical and Supply CompanyInventors: Thomas J.
