  • Patent number: 8763339
Abstract: An energy saving insulated roofing shingle and related method of manufacturing. One embodiment of the shingle has an insulator attached to, or formed as part of, the interior surface of an outer layer across a portion of the headlap area about equal to the designed exposure surface area of the installed shingle. The insulation reduces the heat absorbed by the shingle and transmitted into the deck that in turn heats the attic space. The disclosed principles reduce the heat load directed into a building from the sun. In addition, the thickness of the insulation under the shingle nailing area may be minimized, thereby allowing for the normal asphalt shingle surfaces to lay against each other. Moreover, to reduce the overall shingle thickness, the insulation could replace all or part of the backsurfacing materials applied to the back of shingles in the location where the insulation is added. Additionally, asphalt applied to the back of the shingle could be reduced to accommodate insulation thickness.

  • Patent number: 6190754
Abstract: The variegated shingle comprises a shingle layer having front and rear surfaces the front surface including a butt portion and a headlap portion. The shingle layer contains granules on the front surface forming a plurality of horizontal striations providing gradations having color values ranging from light to dark extending between a leading edge of the butt portion and an upper portion thereof. The striations include an upper striation along the upper portion, a lower striation closer to the leading edge, and an intermediate striation between the upper and lower striations. The upper striation is darker in color value than the lower striation, whereas the intermediate striation is no darker in color value than the upper striation and no lighter in color value than the lower striation. The color values of at least one of the upper, lower, and intermediate striations vary across the granule layer.

  • Patent number: 6148578
Abstract: An improved roof and method wherein each course of slate is underlain with an interlayment material layer such that the interlayment material acts as a base to the through joints, resulting in a reduction in the amount of slate used by approximately 40% to 50%. The slate meets side to side (the through joint), the underlaying interlayment material providing sufficient waterproofing to protect the roof as well as being of lighter weight and a more economical slate roof than the slate which it replaces.

  • Patent number: 6044609
Abstract: A structure for attaching furring panels on a building is disclosed. The structure has longitudinal panel holders fixed to the building. A plurality of hooks are regularly mounted along each of the holders. The furring panels are held on the panel holders while passing across the holders, thus being attached on the building. The panels individually have a plurality of downward insert rails, thus being caught by the hooks of the holders. Each of the panels also has both a top channel and a downward lower rail, thus being coupled to another furring panel with the lower rail being fitted into the top channel of the other furring panel. The above structure allows the panels to be uniformly expandable or contractible in accordance with a change of atmospheric temperature, thus almost completely preventing the furring panels from partially warping or cracking.

  • Patent number: 6038826
Abstract: This invention is directed to a multi-layer laminated shingle, wherein each shingle layer comprises granule and bituminous coated web, with the layers laminated together and with the butt zone of the base layer disposed against a bottom surface of the tab zone of the secondary layer and with the tab zone of the base layer disposed against the bottom surface of the butt zone of the secondary layer. The shingle lends itself to having tabs spaced by voids. Because the tabs in the base layer are inverted, the base layer's butt zone is visible through voids in the tabs of the secondary layer. The method of making the shingle lends itself to complementally cutting out the tabs of two side-by-side shingles from a given line. Enhanced nailing area is provided, and stacking of shingles for packaging is facilitated.

  • Patent number: 5992117
Abstract: A sidewall for a cargo container is provided having at least one pair of composite panels and means for joining the panels. Each composite panel includes a uniform facing member; a non-uniform facing member having major, minor and inclined portions; and a core member sandwiched between and bonded to the uniform facing member and the major portion of the non-uniform facing member. The uniform member is planar and has outer and inner surfaces. The non-uniform member has a planar major portion and a parallel minor portion which has outer and inner surfaces. The inner surface of the minor portion of the non-uniform member abuts the inner surface of the uniform member. The non-uniform member also has an inclined portion which connects the major and minor portions and which is angled with respect to the major and minor portions.

  • Patent number: 5941039
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a concrete roof tile having a front edge surface, which is that surface of the tile across the width of the tile and which faces downwardly when in use on a roof. The front edge surface has a progressively greater depth as between a relatively thin profiled central portion and thicker profiled side portions. In use, the horizontal rows of the roof tiles are laid in half-bond relationship with adjacent horizontal rows to give a pleasing appearance in which the combined overlapped thicknesses of the tiles in one such row of tiles and the tiles of adjacent rows of tiles above and/or below at overlapped headlap and tail portions are the same or substantially the same.

  • Patent number: 5737881
Abstract: An interlocking roof system of tiers of successively higher interlocking panels mounted on base members, each panel being held in place by protrusions fitted into notches in the base member of the next higher tier, the panels of each higher tier having a groove wrapped about and locked onto a lip of the adjacent lower panel, side lips and clips being used to connect adjacent panels located in the same horizontal tier. The base member of the lowest tier is mounted at its lowest edge on a riser along the lowest edge of the roof being covered and at its upper edge on the rafters of the roof being covered. The next lowest base member is located at its lowest edge along the upper edge of the adjacent lower base member and at its upper edge on the rafters.

  • Patent number: 5661939
Abstract: A plastic siding panel which includes an upper connector, a medial main portion, and a lower connector. The connectors are complementary in shape so that they interlock with other siding panels of like construction. At least one of the connectors include a strip of high strength material for rigidifying the siding panel. The siding panels are fabricated by extruding a monolithic, substantially planar sheet composed of three different materials. Two of the materials are formed as layers which extend over the entire sheet. The third material is a high strength material adapted to rigidify the siding panel. After extrusion, the sheet is formed into a siding panel having a main portion, an upper connection and a lower connection.
