Patent number: 4801627Abstract: Vinyl chloride (VC) resins, particularly poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC) are reinforced with glass fibers which have been sized with a particular aminosilane coupling agent and a particularly characterized basic film former. At the processing temperature of VC resin, containing a stabilizer against degradation during thermoforming, for example in an extruder, or on a mixing mill used to blend the resin with sized glass fibers, a reaction occurs between an aminosilane coupling agent and the VC resin which reaction involves C.dbd.C bonds in the homopolymer, provided the polymer film former in the size is more basic than poly(vinyl acetate) ("PVA"). The film former catalyzes the thermal dehydrohalogenation of the VC homopolymer at the fiber-resin interface so as to generate allylic Cl moieties in chains of the homopolymer, which moieties react with the amine groups of the aminosilane.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1986Date of Patent: January 31, 1989Assignee: The B. One hydrosiloxy polymer cross-linking agent is a copolymer having about 0.75 to about 3.0 moles of R.sub.2 HSiO.sub.0.5, about 0.37 to about 1.5 moles of R"SiO.sub.1.5, and about 0.5 to about 1.5 moles of SiO.sub.2, wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals of 1 to about 8 carbon atoms and phenyl; and R" is a (--CH.sub.2 --).sub.a R' radical where R' is perfluoroalkyl of 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, a is at least 2 but less than 10, and (--CH.sub.2 --) is straight or branched chain; and the copolymer has a viscosity of about 30 to about 4,000 centipoise at 25.degree. Patent number: 4585830Abstract: The presence of immiscible silica treating agents in high viscosity, pumpable polyorganosiloxane compositions alters the rheology of these compositions sufficiently to permit fabrication of unsupported profiles that retain their initial configuration during heat curing. The immiscible treating agent constitutes from 20 to 100 percent by weight of the total treating agent present in the composition.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1985Date of Patent: April 29, 1986Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventor: Randall P. Patent number: 4560711Abstract: A noncuring transparent organopolysiloxane composition obtained from a mixture of phenyl containing organopolysiloxane with at least 50% methyl radicals and 5 to 20% phenyl radicals and a finely divided silica treated with a phenyl containing silane or polysiloxane and a hydroxyl or hydrolyzable group is used in optical communications components, such as filler or a coupling agent.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1985Date of Patent: December 24, 1985Assignee: Toray Silicone Company, Ltd.Inventor: Toshio Suzuki

Patent number: 4551485Abstract: The impact strength of thermoplastic poly(ethylene terephthalate) molding compositions containing a reinforcing filler (preferably glass fiber), an epoxidized crystallization promoter (e.g., an epoxidized vegetable oil) and a nucleating agent (e.g., sodium stearate) is markedly improved by including in the composition a small amount of an organofunctional silane, i.e., a compound characterized by having a functional substituent at the end of a methylene chain bound to a silicon atom to which are also bonded a plurality of readily hydrolyzable groups. A few such compounds are gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, gamma-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and gamma-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. The formulations may also contain a warp-reducing filler such as mica. Organofunctional silanes typically have application in thermoplastic polymers only as coupling agents, i.e.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1984Date of Patent: November 5, 1985Assignee: Ethyl CorporationInventors: Gary S. Patent number: 4536360Abstract: Vinyl chloride (VC) resins, particularly poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC) are reinforced with glass fibers which have been sized with a particular aminosilane coupling agent and an alkylene oxide-containing film former. This combination of sizing components, among all others, generates allylic Cl atoms in the VC chain of the polymer. Though the VC resin contains an adequate amount of stabilizer to counter the formation of such allylic Cl atoms in the mass of the resin, enough are generated near the surface of the glass to cause a reaction with the aminosilane so as to bond the glass fibers to the VC resin so strongly that a composite only fails in coherent failure. The sizing consists essentially of (i) an aminosilane coupling agent having a reactive amine moiety which upon reaction with the VC resin results in a compound having a peak in a proton magnetic resonance spectra at 5.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1984Date of Patent: August 20, 1985Assignee: The B. Patent number: 4529774Abstract: A treatment for finely divided silica reinforcing fillers is provided which comprises heating the silica filler in the presence of a fluoroalkyl-functional diorganopolysiloxane treating agent. The treated fillers are especially compatible with fluorosilicone gums, and fluorosilicone rubbers made using said fillers exhibit improved mechanical properties, especially tear strength and compression set.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1982Date of Patent: July 16, 1985Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Edwin R.
