Hydrocarbon Wax Patents (Class 524/487)
  • Patent number: 6844381
Abstract: Syndiotactic polypropylene blends having a unique set of mechanical properties may be prepared by blending syndiotactic polypropylene with a high molecular weight mineral oil, an ultra low density polyethylene, or both. The syndiotactic polypropylene blends of the present invention have been found to have reduced flexural modulus, reduced haze, improved impact strength and shorter injection molding cycle times. It has been determined that the addition of about 5 to about 10 percent high molecular weight mineral oil to a syndiotactic polypropylene can decrease flexural modulus values by about 25 to about 30 percent. Moreover, the addition of up to about 10 percent mineral oil to the syndiotactic polypropylene material does not show signs of bleeding or impair clarity, in fact, percent haze values are slightly improved with the addition of mineral oil.

Abstract: A process for continuously producing a polymer drag reducing agent (DRA) is described. The process concerns mixing a monomer and a catalyst in at least one continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) to form a mixture. The mixture is continuously injected into a volume continuously formed by a thermoplastic material, such as polyethylene. The thermoplastic material is periodically sealed off to form a temporary container or bag. The monomer is permitted to polymerize in the temporary container to form polymer. In one non-limiting embodiment, the polymerization in the bag takes place within an inert, circulating fluid that accelerates heat transfer. The polymer and the temporary container are then ground together, preferably at non-cryogenic temperatures, to produce a particulate polymer drag reducing agent. In one preferred, non-limiting embodiment, the grinding or pulverizing occurs in the presence of at least one solid organic grinding aid.

Abstract: Compositions comprising at least one acrylic, vinyl acetate or epoxide polymer or copolymer as a film-forming ingredient and an ester of benzoic acid wherein the alcohol portion of the ester is alkyl and contains eight carbon atoms exhibit unexpected improvements in film-forming and applied film properties. In preferred compositions this alcohol portion is 2-ethylhexyl. Additionally, the preferred benzoic acid ester frequently interacts synergistically with benzoic acid esters derived from oligomeric ethylene glycols.

Abstract: A two component, curable hot melt adhesive system includes a first hot melt adhesive formulation which has a softening temperature greater than room temperature and which includes a first component of a curable adhesive therein. The system includes a second hot melt adhesive formulation which has a softening temperature which is greater than room temperature and which includes a second component of a curable adhesive therein. The second component is reactive with the first component to provide a cured adhesive bond. In use, the two formulations are heated to a temperature above their softening temperature and are contacted so as to cause mixing. The mixture cools to provide a thermoplastic bond which subsequently cures to provide a permanent adhesive bond. While the first and the second component individually perform as hot melt adhesives, combining the first and the second gives enhanced adhesive performance in extended temperature ranges.

Abstract: This coating composition is useful as a floor finish. The floor finish includes a polymer having a controlled particle size, a controlled particle size distribution, and higher than normal weight percent solids content. This unique polymer provides a floor finish that has a higher than normal solids content and a lower than expected viscosity. The preferred polymer is a vinyl acrylic copolymer. The preferred floor finish has a solids content of 30-40 weight percent and a viscosity of less than 10 centipoise (cps). These unique properties allows the floor finish to be spread with a conventional string mop. Two to three applications of this floor exhibit equal or better gloss and protection than three to six coats of a normal floor finishes having solids of 15-25 percent by weight.

Abstract: Coupled alcohol ethoxylates made by reacting alcohol ethoxylates with a diisocyanate have been found to improve the thermal properties of toner compositions and powder coatings. The alcohol ethoxylates have saturated linear alcohol portions of from about 20-70 carbon atom chain lengths. The diisocyanates may be aromatic diisocyanates such as toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and/or methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). Preferably, about one mole of diisocyanate is reacted with about two moles of the alcohol ethoxylates to form the coupled alcohol ethoxylates that are useful compatibilizers to improve the homogeneity of toner compositions and powder coating compositions.
