    Abstract: Good adhesion of rubber to metal is very important in rubber articles containing metal reinforcement. For example, in a steel belted tire good adhesion between the tire rubber and the metal tire cord is of utmost importance. Good metal to rubber adhesion is also of great importance in a variety of other rubber products, including power transmission belts, conveyor belts, and rubber hoses containing metal reinforcements. This invention reveals the use of certain adhesion promoters that are useful in rubber products containing metal reinforcements. More specifically, this invention discloses the use of allyl phosphite esters, allyl phosphate esters, 5-nitro isatoic anhydride, iminodiacetic acids, N-substituted iminodiacetic acids, salts of N-substituted iminodiacetic acids, and salts of iminodiacetic acids as adhesion promoters in composites containing rubber and metal.

The latices contain a protective colloid comprising a water-soluble polymer (a) containing at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of N-methylolacrylamide and N-methylolmethacrylamide and a water-soluble polymer (b) of ethylene glycol, wherein polymer (b) has a molecular weight of between 1,000 and 50,000.The latices are prepared by polymerization in aqueous emulsion, in the presence of an initiator and the above-described protective colloid.The latices may be applied as binders in the manufacture of paints, glues, paper, textiles, floor coverings and mortar additives.

The preferred secondary antioxidant is tris di(tert.-butyl phenyl) phosphite. The composition may be used in for example, the moulding of tanks, barrels, containers and the like.

Polymeric compositions which contain 25 parts by weight or more of the zinc dimethacrylate adjuvant per 100 parts by weight of rubbery polymer in the absence of reinforcing fillers exhibit excellent strength and hysteresis characteristics when cured. The surface area of the zinc dimethacrylate adjuvant along with its method of preparation are extremely important factors in the excellent properties obtained when polymeric compositions containing the adjuvant are cured.
