  • Patent number: 7335706
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for synthesizing rubbery copolymers, such as styrene-butadiene rubber, or rubbery homopolymers, such as polybutadiene rubber, that are alkoxy functionalized, e.g., alkoxysilane functionalized, and provide desirable dispersion of silica in rubber compounds, such as for use in tire treads. To that end, the method, in one embodiment, involves admixing anionically polymerizable conjugated diene monomers with optional vinyl aromatic, an anionic-polymerization initiator, i.e., an organolithium compound, and a lithium alkoxide to form an admixture of living polymers, then adding a halogenated coupling agent to the admixture of living polymers effecting conditions to form an alkoxy functionalized rubbery polymer. The alkoxy functionalized rubbery polymers can be utilized in tire tread rubbers where the rubbery polymers may provide desirable wear properties without substantially sacrificing other performance characteristic(s), e.g., traction properties.

  • Patent number: 7279531
Abstract: The present invention is directed to rubbery polymers, such as polybutadiene rubber or styrene-butadiene rubber, that contain tin coupling agents and provide desirable dispersion of carbon black in rubber compounds, such as for use in tire treads. The tin coupling agents are defined by the general formulas (I) (X3Sn)2O or (II) (X3Sn)O—(CH2)n—O(X3Sn), wherein X is a halogen and n is 1 to 20. A method of rubbery polymer synthesis, in one embodiment, involves mixing anionically polymerizable conjugated diene monomers with optional vinyl aromatic and an anionic-polymerization initiator, i.e., an organolithium compound, to form a mixture of living polymers. A tin coupling agent is added to the mixture of living polymers effecting polymerization conditions to form the tin coupled rubbery polymer. Such tin coupled rubbery polymers can be utilized in tire tread rubbers where the rubbery polymers may provide desirable wear properties without substantially sacrificing other performance characteristics.

  • Patent number: 6211271
Abstract: A process for producing a vulcanizable rubber composition containing silica and carbon black, comprises the step of intimately mixing at a temperature of from 130° to 180° C. at least a first cross-linkable unsaturated chain polymer with a first carbon black-based reinforcing filler, so as to obtain a first rubber composition capable of allowing a subsequent effective dispersion of a second silica-based reinforcing filler and of a second cross-linkable unsaturated chain polymer. The rubber composition thus obtained shows a homogeneous dispersion of the reinforcing fillers, in particular of the silica-based reinforcing filler, constant physical-mechanical characteristics, and improved drawability, and is particularly suitable for the manufacture of tire treads with low rolling resistance.

  • Patent number: 6139675
Abstract: Disclosed is a process of manufacturing a water-based adhesive bonded, solvent resistant protective laminate utilizing the steps of: providing a film having a first surface and a second surface; depositing a discontinuous coating of a cross-linkable; carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber latex adhesive on the first surface of the film, the latex adhesive containing an effective amount of a cross-linking agent; joining a fibrous nonwoven web into intimate bonding contact with the film and adhesive; and removing water from the adhesive thereby causing cross-linking at reactive sites. The adhesive may be deposited utilizing gravure printing techniques and is desirably deposited at a rate greater than about 2 grams per square meter of film. Also disclosed is an adhesively bonded, solvent resistant protective laminate produced by the process. The film component of the laminate may be composed of a thermoset polymer or a thermoplastic polymer. The film may also be microporous or microapertured.
