    Abstract: The present invention is directed to thermosetting binder compositions for coating, comprising:(I)(1) a non-acidic resinous compound, saturated, molecular weight at least 900, alcoholic hydroxyl content at least 0.2 eq/100 g;(2) a cross-linking agent comprising a nonacidic polyester of a polycarboxylic acid, having more than one beta-hydroxyl ester group per molecule, at least one of components (1) and (2) having an alcoholic hydroxyl functionality of more than 2, and(II) a curing catalyst comprising a transesterification-promoting metal compound which is insoluble in liquid hydrocarbons.These compositions can be used in solvent-based lacquers and paints, in coating powders, aqueous powder suspensions, in aqueous coating compositions for cathodic electrodeposition; for aqueous compositions component (1) (1) is preferably an epoxy resin/amine adduct.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method for sizing paper wherein the sizing agent employed is a hydrophobic cellulose reactive sizing agent such as a ketene dimer sizing agent. There is employed in combination with the sizing agent a novel sizing accelerator. Disclosed also is a novel sizing composition comprised of the sizing agent and the accelerator, the accelerator being a water-soluble nitrogen-containing reaction product of (1) a water-soluble polyaminopolyamide, such as that derived by reaction of adipic acid and diethylene-triamine; (2) an epihalohydrin, such as epichlorohydrin; and (3) a composition comprising, by weight, from about 20% to about 65% bis(hexamethylene)triamine, said composition being the residue obtained after recovery of hexamethylenediamine from its manufacture by hydrogenation of adiponitrile.

    Abstract: A cellulose treating agent obtained by dispersing an alkyl ketene dimer in water in the presence of a dispersing agent comprising a reaction product of a polyalkylenepolyamine and a mixture of carboxylic acids containing at least 20% by weight of aliphatic monohydroxymonocarboxylic acids having 9 to 32 carbon atoms or a product obtained by reacting epihalohydrin with said reaction product. This cellulose treating agent existing as a very stable cationic aqueous dispersion of the alkyl ketene dimer is highly effective to impart a water repellency to cellulose fibers and can be used as a well-improved reactive sizing agent for papermaking.

    Abstract: A process for the manufacture of fibres from a polyamide entirely or substantially consisting of poly-p-phenylene terephthalamide, by spinning a spinning mass having a temperature of 20.degree.-120.degree. C. and consisting of a mixture of concentrated sulphuric acid having a strength of at least 96% by weight and, calculated on the weight of the mixture, at least 15% of polyamide having an inherent viscosity of at least 2.5, the spinning mass being downwardly extruded into a coagulation bath from a spinneret whose efflux side is positioned in a gaseous inert medium and shortly above the liquid surface of the coagulation bath. The spinning mass is prepared by the successive steps of cooling the concentrated sulphuric acid to below its solidifying point, combining the sulphuric acid thus cooled and the polyamide, intermixing the two substances into a solid state mixture and heating the resulting solid state mixture to spinning temperature.
