  • Patent number: 11891769
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for re-purposing discarded asphalt shingles as soil stabilizers in building and land surface constructions. Discarded (and typically “degraded”) Asphalt Shingles (DAS) are placed beneath building foundation slabs and parking lots in overlapping patterns to replace a measured amount of removed expansive soil to serve as a moisture barrier. DAS can be utilized beneath parking lots in areas of expansive soils by layering the shingles in overlapping patterns to create a moisture barrier from water intrusion from above or below. Building block system (BBS) units may be produced to facilitate handling and transport of the DAS materials to the construction site.

  • Patent number: 11851575
Abstract: A method for generating a shingle roof coating is described. The method includes receiving an asphalt feedstock and separately proceeds to mix an elastomeric polymer and an asphalt flux to generate a first concentrate. The first concentrate is then heated separately from the asphalt feedstock. The method then mixes the first concentrate with the asphalt feedstock and heats the combined first concentrate and the asphalt feedstock to generate the shingle roof coating. The amount of elastomeric polymer in the first concentrate is adjusted based on the type of asphalt feedstock such that the resulting shingle roof coating includes 0.5% to 6% by weight of the elastomeric polymer.

Abstract: A tough water-permeable paver block includes a mass of adherent coated granules with intervening contiguous channels. A method for making pavers includes selecting a gravel, heating, then evenly coating every granule with a non-rigid thermoplastics material typically at about 75 g/kg gravel, placing the hot material into a form, then cooling, optionally under imposed pressure. In one option the paver is formed from loose granules at its final resting place. The material may be provided as a coated, non-adherent gravel for heating into a coherent mass in situ. Applications include footpaths, roads and drain covers.

Abstract: Bitumen may be prepared by obtaining an inflection point value for a mixed bitumen product stream sample, and modifying the mixed bitumen product stream when the inflection point value occurs at a ratio of less than about 2 mL of added non-solvent per 1 gram of the mixed bitumen product stream sample. The inflection point value may correlate to the stability of the mixed bitumen product stream based on the amount of added non-solvent. The mixed bitumen product stream may have or include at least two bitumen feed streams.

Abstract: A method of waterproofing or damp proofing a protected member having a surface with a sulfur-extended elastomer asphalt binder composition uses a sulfur-extended elastomer asphalt binder composition that includes elemental sulfur, an elastomer and an asphalt binder. The method includes the steps of combining the elastomer with the asphalt binder maintained at an elastomer mixing temperature such that an intermediate asphalt binder mixture forms, and combining elemental sulfur with the intermediate asphalt binder maintained at a sulfur mixing temperature such that the sulfur-extended elastomer asphalt binder composition forms. The method also includes the step of applying the sulfur-extended elastomer asphalt binder composition to the surface of the protected member such that the sulfur-extended elastomer asphalt binder composition contacts, adheres to and forms a layer upon the surface of the protected member. The asphalt binder composition is applied at a temperature no greater than 145° C.
