Ester Contains An Oxygen Atom Other Than As A Carboxylic Acid Ester Group Patents (Class 525/303)
  • Patent number: 4281082
Abstract: Disclosed are novel organic pigments adapted particularly for use as fillers for paper. The organic pigments are finely divided particles obtained by graft copolymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, such as styrene, onto a water-soluble cationic prepolymer in an aqueous solution and in the presence of a free-radical polymerization initiator.

  • Patent number: 4279795
Abstract: Materials for forming a hydrogel when contacted with water having improved anti-thrombogenic properties and a highly improved mechanical strength are obtained by the copolymerization of a free radical-polymerizable vinyl monomer capable of forming a hydrophilic polymer and a hydrophobic macromolecular compound having a chain-terminated polymerizable double bond and a molecular weight of 1,000 to 100,000.

  • Patent number: 4268433
Abstract: Flame retardation of 1,2-polybutadiene based upon the use of halogenated bisphenol bisacrylate reactive flame retardants, for example, 2,2-bis(4-methacryloyl-3,5-dibromophenyl)-propane. Flame retardancy performance of UL 94 V-0 or V-1 has been achieved without impairing desirable dielectric properties and heat resistance inherently possessed by 1,2-polybutadiene. If an aromatic bismaleimide modifier, for example, N,N'-4,4'-diphenylmethane bismaleimide, is jointly used, a thermal expansion coefficient less than a half of the thermal expansion coefficient of cured 1,2-polybutadiene can be achieved.

  • Patent number: 4268639
Abstract: Self-curing compositions are prepared based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) are by mixing a finely powdered solid polymer phase of PMMA and/or poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) with a liquid monomer phase of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and/or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in a weight ratio of polymer phase to monomer phase of 1.5 to 3.3:1 wherein the portion of PHEMA in the cured product is between 2 and 99 weight %. The product is prepared by vigorously stirring the mixture at room temperature until the polymerization is essentially finished.

  • Patent number: 4260701
Abstract: Improved composition for a fingernail coating having an acrylic binder, a peroxide catalyst, a tertiary amine accelerator, and a polymeric filler at least partially soluble in the coating. The acrylic binder contains a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising at least a major proportion of methoxyethyl methacrylate. A polyfunctional monomer may be present that copolymerizes with the monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, for crosslinking and toughening.

  • Patent number: 4247444
Abstract: A graft copolymer having a polymeric backbone with pendent hydroxyl groups; wherein the hydrogen atom of at least the one the hydroxyl groups is replaced by the formula ##STR1## where R is an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group or an aromatic group; R.sup.1 is an alkylene group having 2-6 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 is a polymer segment of a vinyl addition polymer, such as butyl acrylate/hydroxyethyl acrylate; coating compositions of this copolymer can be cross-linked with conventional cross-linking agents such as an alkylated melamine formaldehyde resin or an organic polyisocyanate and coating compositions useful for flexible elastomeric substrates can be prepared from this copolymer.

  • Patent number: 4173596
Abstract: The impact resistance of rigid polymeric resins (e.g. PVC, SAN, PMMA, etc.,) is enhanced by the incorporation therein of an improved toughener. This toughener comprises three distinct phases: (a) a core of thermoplastic or thermoset resin having a Tg below room temperature, (b) a rubber-like layer overpolymerized on the core, and (c) a relatively hard polymer layer overpolymerized on the rubber layer. The utilization of a "soft" core, or seed, apparently enhances the efficiency of the toughener in the rigid polymer. In one of the preferred embodiments of this invention, the improved toughener comprises a seed derived from a partially corss-linked poly(n-butylacrylate), a rubber-like (or intermediate) layer derived from a monomer mixture containing n-butylacrylate and an addition monomer and an outer layer (or shell) derived from a monomer mixture containing styrene and methylmethacrylate.

  • Patent number: 4165418
Abstract: A pigment dispersant suitable for use in making a series of paints, the dispersant being a copolymer of defined proportions of ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing hydroxy and/or amide groups, straight or branched chain alkyl groups of from 7 to 22 carbon atoms and optionally also groupings which can promote association of the copolymer with a pigment surface. A millbase made with the aid of such a dispersant can be combined in either loading or tinting operations with a wide range of different film-forming polymers.
