Abstract: A grafted and/or functionalized macromolecule comprises entanglement-inhibited architecture wherein the polymer exhibits reduced melt viscosity. In one embodiment, the macromolecule comprises a polymer of an isoolefin having about 4 to about 7 carbon atom and a para-alkylstyrene, wherein a grafted macromonomer such as a terminally functionalized polystyryl chain of very narrow molecular weight distribution is attached to the para-alkyl group of the para-alkylstyrene such that entanglement of adjacent chains in the melt are inhibited. In addition to distributed macromonomer grafts, other functionality may be attached to the para-alkyl group of the para-alkylstyrene to introduce other desirable properties such as radiation curability. In another embodiment the macromolecule comprises a polymer of one or more simple olefinic monomers wherein a macromolecule is attached to pendent functionality and/or copolymerized into the polymer backbone.

Abstract: Graft copolymers and processes for the preparation thereof are provided. The copolymers comprise a base polymer having grafted thereto a monomeric 2-alkenyl azlactone. The surface properties of the graft copolymers can be modified by binding thereto nucleophilic reagents comprising further functional groups with desired properties. Further, the amount of azlactone available at the surface of a graft copolymer for binding to such nucleophilic reagents can be controlled by selecting a surface against which the graft copolymer is formed. The graft copolymers exhibit desirable thermoplastic, melt flow, and adhesion properties and are particularly useful for immobilizing proteins. Methods of immunoassay based on the immobilization of proteins are also disclosed. Another utility of the graft copolymers involves the compatibilizing of immiscible polymer blends.

  • Patent number: 5229456
Abstract: A novel graft copolymer capable of imparting to a polyolefin when blended therewith high tensile modulus and high sag resistance without increasing melt viscosity, and a method of making the same. The graft copolymer is a polyolefin having a relatively high weight-average molecular weight methacrylate polymer grafted thereto. The graft copolymer is formed by dissolving or swelling a non-polar polyolefin in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, heating to dissolve the polyolefin, and while stirring the mixture, adding a methacrylate monomer, together with an initiator to produce a constant, low concentration of radicals, to form a graft copolymer with a high molecular weight polymer chain covalently bonded or grafted to the polyolefin backbone. The graft copolymer can be separated from the solvent, isolated by volatilizing the solvent, for example in a devolatilizing extruder, and extruded into a desired shape such as a sheet, tube or the like. This graft copolymer can be blended with a poolyolefin matrix.
