  • Patent number: 8946322
Abstract: Thermosetting resins are provided that are toughened with an irradiated thermoplastic toughening agent and which have reduced levels of solvent-induced micro crack formation. The thermoplastic toughening agent is treated with a sufficient amount of high-energy radiation (e.g. electron beam or gamma rays) to cause a reduction in solvent-induced micro crack formation in the cured resin when compared to the same toughened thermosetting resin in which the non-irradiated version of the thermoplastic toughening agent is used.

  • Patent number: 6864344
Abstract: Sulfonated condensation products that are stable in storage and have increased thermal stability are based on aminoplastic formers having at least two amino groups or naphthalene and formaldehyde and, optionally include organic nitrogen bases which additionally contain, as nitrogenous formulation auxiliary agents, compounds of general formula (I) R1—NH—X—Y—R2, wherein R1 and R2 independently represent H, —CH3, —C2H5, —C3H7, —(CH2)n—CH2—; X?—CH2, CO, CS; Y?S, NH, —(CH2)m—; n=0 to 9; m=1 to 4; and/or compounds of general formula (II), wherein Z?—OCH3, —SO3—H, —SO3Na+, —NO2, —NH2, —NH—NH2, —CO2—Na+, —CHO. The mole ratio of aminoplastic formers: formaldehyde: sulfite: nitrogenous formulation auxiliary agents rangin from 1:1.9 to 6.0:1.0 to 2.0:0.01 to 1.5 and/or the mole ratio of naphthalene sulfonic acid: formaldehyde; nitrogenous formulation auxiliary agents equals 1:0.7 to 3.0:0.01 to 1.5. • Patent number: 5648435
Abstract: A process of preparing multicyanate esters by: a) reacting an adduct of a tertiary amine and a phenol-formaldehyde oligomer or derivative thereof with cyanogen halide in a solvent reaction medium under conditions to form a reaction product stream containing at least one of the following compounds selected from the group consisting of tertiary amine-hydrohalide salt, solvent, and impurities, and, based upon the total weight of the reaction product stream excluding the weight of said tertiary amine-hydrohalide salt, from about 10 percent to about 40 percent of a multicyanate ester; b) recycling a portion of said reaction product stream into the mixture of step a; and c) separating and recovering said solvent and tertiary amine from said reaction product stream. The multicyanate ester products produced are useful as bonding agents in friction materials, molding materials, coatings, and adhesives.

  • Patent number: 4390340
Abstract: Mineral tanned leather is frequently retanned with synthetic tanning agents to improve the fullness and softness, but leather retanned by the prior art methods is difficult to dye in full shades with anionic dyes. According to the invention, condensation products of C.sub.1-4 aldehydes with certain aromatic sulfonic acids or carboxylic acids containing amino groups are employed for retanning, thereby improving the receptivity of the leather for anionic dyes. These acids have the general formula ##STR1## where X and X' are independently H, --CH.sub.2 --SO.sub.3 H or --CH.sub.2 --OH, A is a benzene radical, Y and Z are independently H, --SO.sub.3 H or --CO.sub.2 H, R is H or C.sub.1-4 -alkyl and n is from 0 to 10, with the proviso that at least one sulfonic acid or carboxyl group is present in the molecule.
