Acid Anhydride Patents (Class 526/271)
  • Patent number: 5874510
Abstract: A process for making crosslinked polymers of maleic anhydride and methyl vinyl ether is described. The process is characterized by precharging methyl vinyl ether, partially or totally, in isopropyl acetate, and a crosslinker, and then continuously feeding molten maleic anhydride and methyl vinyl ether into the thus-precharged reactor. The monomer mixture then is polymerized at a temperature of about 60.degree.-80.degree. C. The reaction product is a pumpable, homogeneous suspension of the crosslinked copolymer at a solids level of about 30-50%, which is recoverable in high yield upon removal of the solvent and filtering the suspension.

Abstract: New ethylene/acid copolymer ionomers which contain both (meth)acrylic acid and certain dicarboxylic acid monomers are described. The polymers may be melt processed as readily as ethylene/(meth)acrylic acid dipolymer ionomers, in contrast to ethylene/acid copolymer ionomers containing only dicarboxylic acid monomer derived in-chain acid units. Polymers with typical levels of (meth)acrylic acid and low levels of diacid provide ionomers comparable to existing ionomers, but which have adhesive and polymer blend compatibilizing characteristics, while polymers with higher levels of diacid will exhibit properties which depend on in-chain diacid derived units.

  • Patent number: 5849047
Abstract: This invention concerns the utilization of polymeric compounds generated from Mannich base macromonomers as lubricant oil and fuel additives or intermediates to such additives. Requisite macromonomers are generated via Mannich reaction of high molecular weight alkyl phenols and unsaturated amines. Homopolymers of the Mannich base macromonomers or copolymers with activated unsaturated monomers, such as maleic anhydride, are of particular interest as crankcase dispersants. For example, functionalization of Mannich base macromonomer/maleic anhydride copolymers with amines affords effective crankcase dispersants. Such polymeric dispersants are designed to impart superior sludge protection and improved viscometrics to lubricant oils.

  • Patent number: 5763553
Abstract: The invention is related to the synthesis of novel types of maleic-acrylic copolymers containing 60 to 100% of maleate units (by weight), respectively, 40 to 0% of acrylate units (by weight) based on the sum of both monomeric units composing the copolymer. These copolymers show significant techno-economical and ecological advantages over previously synthesized and described acrylic-maleic copolymers. According to the optimal synthetic procedure for this class of copolymers, one uses very concentrated starting alkaline maleate solutions (at best over 60%), hydrogen peroxide and alkaline peroxy salts as initiators--catalysts for the copolymerization process, as well as reaction temperatures between 105.degree. and 115.degree. C. The obtained copolymers have average molecular masses around 20000, while CCDC values are approximately 17-18 ml 0,25M Calcium Acetate per 1 g of copolymer. The obtained copolymers are well suited for their use as incrustation inhibitors, dispersants or ionic exchangers.

  • Patent number: 5548039
Abstract: A polymer scale deposition preventive agent for use in polymerization of a monomer having an ethylenically unsaturated double bond, comprising an alkaline solution containing a condensation product of (A) an anthraquinone compound having at least two amino groups and (B) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of benzoquinone compounds and naphthoquinone compounds. When the monomer is polymerized in a polymerization vessel having a coating formed by applying the aforementioned preventive agent to inner wall surfaces followed by drying, polymer scale can be effectively prevented from being deposited not only on the areas located in the liquid-phase region but also on the areas around the interface between the gas and liquid phases in the polymerization vessel. When an obtained polymer is formed into a sheet or the like, it is possible to obtain a formed product having few fish eyes and low initial coloration.

  • Patent number: 5532328
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a polymer from heterocyclic monomer units. The process according to the invention is characterized in that polymerization takes place in the presence of a sulphur-containing reagent. It has been found that the process according to the invention can be used to prepare polymers that can readily be processed, either in solution or in the melt. It has further been found that the reaction time of the reaction that takes place is short, while also the efficiency of the reaction is good. In the process according to the invention use can be made of monomer units that are thermostable. Such monomer units are easy to synthesize and easy to keep.
