Abstract: The exemplary embodiments disclosed herein relate to activating methods for initiation polymerization of methylene malonates and other polymerizable compositions. The polymerization may be activated by anionic or free radical mechanisms. Because the polymerization may occur very quickly upon contact between the activating agent and the polymerizable composition, methods are provide herein for separating or otherwise rendering the activating agent ineffective to initiate polymerization, until such a reaction is desired. The separation may be physical (separate packaging, separate application steps, encapsulation) or it may be based on latent-activation methods (activation precursors, UV activation). Products formed from the methods disclosed herein may include inks, adhesives, coatings, sealants, reactive moldings, fibers, films, sheets, medical polymers, composites, laminates and the like.

The present invention further provides methylene malonate monomers prepared by the method of the invention, as well as compositions and products formed from the methylene malonate monomers, including monomer-based products (e.g., inks, adhesives, coatings, sealants or reactive molding) and polymer-based products (e.g.

Abstract: This invention is drawn to a curable composition that has excellent smoothness when a plastic substrate is coated therewith. Also disclosed are active energy beam curable compositions, such as actinically curable compositions, that can be cured without using a photopolymerization initiator, or with the use of a small amount thereof. This object is achieved by the presence of surface treated inorganic oxide microparticles. Such particles are obtained by reacting an alkoxysilane compound (a1) represented by the Formula (1) below and inorganic oxide microparticles (a2) in the presence of water and an organic solvent: (P—SiO3/2)1-a(P—Si(R0)O2/2)a(O1/2R3)z (1) in which P denotes a maleimide containing group, R3 denotes a hydrogen atom or a monovalent organic group, R0 denotes a monovalent organic group, a is 0 or a positive number and satisfies 0?a <1, and z is a positive number and satisfies 0.1 ?z ?2.

Abstract: An acrylate-based optical coating composition containing a blend of monomers, a metal salt, a Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer (HALS), an antioxidant (AO), an initiator and a photochromic dye. The initiator has a range of free radical energy that is below a predetermined level. The cure process is controlled by the catalyst and initiator in combination with the HALS and AO to avoid deleterious reactions that can increase yellowness. The composition is well suited to be applied to a lens and cured in the mold to form a coating with reduced yellowness having high adhesion and abrasion-resistant properties. A photochromic segmented bifocal lens is produced with low photochromic fatigue and favorable % T values.
