Polymerizing In The Presence Of A Specified Material Other Than A Reactant Patents (Class 528/232)
  • Patent number: 4172937
Abstract: A process for preparing a polyimine comprising reacting at least one dialdehyde with at least one diamine in a reaction medium of 100 to about 40 percent by volume of a phenolic compound of the formula, ##STR1## wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and 0 to about 60 percent by volume of a liquid which is miscible with the phenolic compound.

  • Patent number: 4168370
Abstract: A method for the manufacture of amino-formaldehyde resins of low water content. Amino compound and formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde are reacted at a temperature about 60.degree. C. in the liquid phase, the liquid phase being ensured by a reactive modifier. The reactive modifier is a compound which is capable of taking part in the reaction, and also capable of modifying the mixture of reactants to be liquid at the temperature at which the reaction is to be carried out.

  • Patent number: 4144226
Abstract: Ether and acetal carboxylates useful as detergent builders to replace sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) in detergent formulations are known to the art. According to the present invention, new and novel polymeric acetal carboxylates are provided which are stable under laundry use conditions, but depolymerize in acid media, making the polymer fragments more readily biodegradable in waste streams.

  • Patent number: 4119612
Abstract: A polymeric formal having the general formula ##STR1## wherein p is 0 or 1, n is a positive integer from 2 to 200 and R represents optionally halogen-substituted straight-chained or branched-chained alkyl radicals having 3 to 8 carbon atoms, an aryl radical or an aralkyl radical which can be substituted on one or both sides with alkyl or hydroxyalkyl ether groups; improved methods for the preparation of such formals, tetrabromoxylylene-bis-(.beta.-hydroxyethylether) compounds employed in the preparation of such formals and the use of such polymeric and oligomeric formals as flame retardant agents in plastic compositions especially thermoplastic and polycondensation plastic compositions.

  • Patent number: 4115365
Abstract: A method for the preparation of soluble, fusible, aminomethyl diaryl compound resins in the absence of halomethylation or halomethylated materials, which method comprises (a) refluxing a mixture of diaryl compound, an aldehyde, a saturated monocarboxylic acid, and a small amount of a strong acid catalyst to form an aldehyde-diaryl resin, (b) stripping off excess monocarboxylic acid under vacuum, and then (c) adding at least about 1 mole of a primary or secondary amine containing at least one additional nontertiary amino group per reactive group on the aldehyde-diaryl resin.

  • Patent number: 4108826
Abstract: A foundry binder comprising furfuryl alcohol and hexaalkoxymethylmelamine is disclosed. The binder is substantially anhydrous. In using the binder it is substantially free of formaldehyde odor in the fabrication of the binder, in the production of sand shapes, and in metal foundry pouring operations. The hexaalkoxymethylmelamine does not have to be cooked with the furfuryl alcohol as does formaldehyde in commercial furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde binders, and yet the binder provides strengths which are comparable to the furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde binders.

  • Patent number: 4100112
Abstract: Amine silicate compounds are formed by the chemical reaction of hydrated silica with an amine compound in the presence of a suitable alkali catalyst at a suitably elevated temperature, and then by reacting the resultant compounds with aldehydes, epoxys, organic dicarboxylic anhydrides, polycarboxylic acid compounds or carbon disulfide, thereby forming a resinous condensation product.
