  • Patent number: 4691001
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a solid urea-formaldehyde resin comprises steps (a) to (d). Step (a), the initial reaction step is carried out under specified conditions with an F:U ratio of at least 2.5 to 1. The F:U ratio is lowered by addition of urea in step (c) and water is evaporated without precipitation of the resin in step (d).

  • Patent number: 4656061
Abstract: A composition of matter useful as a high solids coating is disclosed. The composition contains at least one fatty polyol derived by ring-opening an epoxidized fatty alcohol or ester, and at least one methylolamino curing agent. • Patent number: 4631320
Abstract: A thermosettable coating composition comprises a hydroxy group-containing polyurethane, polyurea or polyurethane/polyurea polymer, an amino cross-linker and optionally, a catalyst and/or solvent. The polymer is obtained by self condensation of an hydroxyalkyl carbamate compound or condensation of such compound with a polyol and/or a polyamine. An applied coating of the composition is cured by heating to an elevated temperature, e.g., from about 200.degree. to about 400.degree. F. (about 93.degree. to 204.degree. C.).

  • Patent number: 4604448
Abstract: A moulding composition which forms stable, durable mouldings which are color stable, have good water resistance and can be glass clear and fire-resistant, comprises a melamine-formaldehyde resole of mole ratio melamine:formaldehyde in the range 1:1.1 to 1:5.0, and from 20 to 80% by weight, based on the resole, of a glycol or glycol derivative. The composition may also contain one or more of water, polyvinyl alcohol, aluminium hydroxide and reinforcing fillers. The melamine in the resole may be partially replaced with urea. Cure of the resin composition, after shaping, takes place at a pH of at least 6.0, and is accelerated by boron oxide and also by microwave heating. Foamed products are especially useful.

  • Patent number: 4564667
Abstract: A solid urea-formaldehyde resin is provided, having a degree of condensation of 25% to 45%.A process for making the resin is also described and includes several steps. Urea and formaldehyde is first reacted with a molar ratio of U:F of 1:2.5 or more then concentrated. Further urea is added to reduce the ratio to the range 1:1.1 to 1:2 and further concentration is achieved without precipitation of solid resin by the use of a stabilization agent.

  • Patent number: 4536245
Abstract: A melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin characterized by a low rate of formaldehyde emission when cured. Made by a process where the initial reaction mixture has an F/U molar ratio of from about 3:1 to about 1:1, and undergoes a methylolation reaction at an alkaline pH. Preferably at least some of the melamine is present in the initial reaction mixture. The subsequent condensation is at a substantially neutral pH. Has a final F/U molar ratio of 1.3:1 to 0.9:1, a final F/Ueq molar ratio of 1.3:1 to 0.7:1, and a melamine content of from 0.15% to 40% by weight, dry solids basis. Useful for adhesive purposes, particularly as a particleboard binder characterized by low emission rate.

  • Patent number: 4518725
Abstract: Fluidizing agents for hydraulic bonding materials such as, for example, concrete, cements, anhydrites, plasters, limes, or others. The fluidizing agents comprise the water soluble condensation reaction products of aminosulfonic acids, having one or more aromatic nuclei, or a mixture thereof; polyamino products including polyamino acids, polyamides, or polythioamides, or their mono- or polymethylol derivatives, and polyamino derivatives of triazine; and formaldehyde or compounds which generate formaldehyde under reaction conditions. The water soluble fluidizing agents permit a reduction of the quantity of water required for mixing the bonding materials and provide an increased mechanical resistance thereto. The invention includes the bonding materials containing the fluidizing agent, the method of using the fluidizing agents in bonding materials, and method of forming the bonding materials.
