Patent number: 6194487Abstract: In the present method of manufacturing modified particles, a saturated vapor of a monomer B is produced in a condensing chamber, and then particles containing a monomer A, which differs from the monomer B and is polymerizable therewith, are introduced, along with an inert gas, into the condensing chamber through a particle intake. Then, a super-saturated vapor of the monomer B is created by reducing pressure using a pressurizing/depressurizing opening, thereby condensing the monomer B on the surface of the particles, and causing a polymerization reaction between the monomer A and the monomer B. With this method, spherical modified particles of uniform diameter, which include a polymer of the monomers A and B, can be obtained in a short time, by means of simple operations.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1998Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kiyofumi Morimoto, Takahiro Horiuchi, Shigeaki Tasaka

Patent number: 5608030Abstract: Process for continuous preparation of homo- and copolyoxymethylenes with stable end groups in a homogeneous phase, in which in a tubular reactor with static mixing elements cyclic formaldehyde oligomers are polymerized in the presence of protonic acids as initiators in amounts of 0.005 to 500 ppm in a polymerization zone, in which the residence time of the reaction components in this zone is 0.1 to 10 min and in which the initiator is deactivated immediately after polymerization, there being a fluid transition between the polymerization and deactivator zones which is determined solely by the addition of deactivator, and in which, besides deactivation, stabilization of the chain ends is carried out in the presence of residual monomers, with the volatile constituents being removed from the reaction mixture in a subsequent vent unit. Stabilization is carried out in the presence of alkaline substances, either at temperatures of 150.degree. C. to 250.degree. Patent number: 5597557Abstract: A process for making solid colored particles by preparing a reaction solution in water comprising formaldehyde, urea, a cyclic polyamine functional triazine compound, and acid. A dye can be incorporated into the reaction solution if a color other than white is desired. Particles are formed having an average particle size between 1 and 70 microns without the need to resort to crushing to break up agglomerates. Particles made by this process provide excellent color and are easily washable from a substrate when incorporated into a washable formulation.Additionally, it has been found that the incorporation of colored microcapsules of average size of 1-70 microns where the color is located primarily on or in the shell of the microcapsule also provides excellent washable compositions when incorporated into a washable formulation.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1995Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Kanta Kumar, Robert A. Patent number: 5587449Abstract: In the process for the preparation, with simultaneous end group stabilization, of polyacetal copolymers in a homogeneous phase and working up thereof, cyclic formaldehyde oligomers are copolymerized with cyclic acetals in the presence of an initiator in a polymerization reactor and immediately thereafter the initiator is deactivated by addition of basic substances, the unstable chain ends being degraded down to 0.01% to 1% in the presence of residual monomer, the product losing the majority of the residual monomer at the reactor outlet by letting down into a pelletizing device and the residual monomer which remains and the impurities dissolved in the product being removed by extraction with solvents and the product being pelletized, after drying and stabilization.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1995Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Assignee: Hoechst AktiengesellschaftInventors: Dietrich Fleischer, Michael Hoffmockel, Karl-Friedrich Muck, Gunter Sextro

Patent number: 5554718Abstract: Cationic urea/formaldehyde resins are obtainable by condensing urea and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of from 1:1.5 to 1:3 in the presence of polymers which contain not less than 1 mol % of polymerized vinylamine units and have Fikentscher K values of from 5 to 300, in an amount of from 5 to 50 g per mole of urea in the end product, where the mixture is first a) precondensed at a pH of from 8 to 14, then acidified and b) condensed at a pH of from 1 to 5 until gel formation begins, c) then from 0.3 to 1.5 moles of formaldehyde are added per mole of urea used, d) post-condensation is carried out and e) the resin solution is subsequently neutralized. The resins thus obtained are used in papermaking as assistants for increasing the dry and wet strength of paper and result in less dulling of the whiteness of the paper.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1991Date of Patent: September 10, 1996Assignee: BASF AktiengesellschaftInventors: Klaus Flory, Andreas Stange, Michael Kroener, Norbert Sendhoff
