  • Patent number: 5521014
Abstract: Crosslinkable, polyaromatic, polyether or polyester oligomers can have glass transition temperatures above 900.degree. F. while exhibiting desirable toughness for aerospace applications and ease of processing. A plurality (i.e. three or more) of generally linear aryl arms extend outwardly like spokes from a central aromatic hub through ether or ester linkages. Each spoke usually includes electronegative linkages, and is capped with one or two crosslinking functionalities (i.e. unsaturated hydrocarbon sites) which may be thermally or chemically activated to complete the advanced composite during curing. Among other methods, linear and multidimensional polyether oligomers are synthesized using nitrophthalic anhydride or halophthalic anhydride, dialcohols, or polyols, diamines, and suitable end caps.

  • Patent number: 5466764
Abstract: There are here disclosed an adhesive composition obtained by adding a fluorine-containing carboxylic acid epoxy adduct to a 2-cyanoacrylate, and a process for preparing the adhesive composition. This 2-cyanoacrylate-based adhesive composition is excellent in storage stability and particularly excellent in adhesive force and impact resistance and has a high hardening rate. In particular, the adhesive strength of the 2-cyanoacrylate-based adhesive composition can be remarkably increased without lowering the hardening rate, and so the 2-cyanoacrylate-based adhesive composition can exert a sufficient resistance to impact and the like at the time of the adhesion of metals, rubbers, plastics and lumbers and the reliability of adherends can be improved.

  • Patent number: 4591616
Abstract: Copolymers of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and hexafluoroacetone (HFA) exhibit lower indices of refraction than polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and can be blended well with PMMA at widely variable ratios. The obtained blends are thermoplastic resins which can easily be moulded or extruded into desirably shaped and transparent members having good mechanical properties and weather resistance. The blends are soluble in various organic solvents. It is preferable that the amount of HFA in the copolymer is not more than 90 mol %. The refractive index of a member formed of the blend falls in the range of about 1.37-1.49 and can freely be controlled by controlling the weight ratio of PMMA to VDF/HFA copolymer. The blend is useful for optical fibers, cylindrical lenses, etc.

  • Patent number: 4451646
Abstract: Amorphous, highly viscous high molecular weight copolyethers containing in excess of 200 total repeating units and formed of --CF.sub.2 --CF.sub.2 --O-- and --CF.sub.2 --O-- repeating units randomly distributed along the chain and linked to each other either directly or through an oxygen atom, in which latter case a peroxy group is present along the chain. These copolyethers, which are useful for preparing bifunctional telomers, high molecular weight fluoropolymers, and highly stable lubricants and heat exchange materials, are prepared by reacting molecular oxygen with tetrafluoroethylene dissolved in a fluorinated or chlorofluorinated solvent selected from the group consisting of dichlorodifluoromethane, perfluorocyclobutane, perfluorodimethylcyclobutane, 1,2-dichloro-hexafluoropropane and 1,2-dichloro-tetrafluoroethane in the presence of ultraviolet radiation and under such conditions that the molar ratio of the tetrafluoroethylene to the oxygen in the reactant feed is between about 0.

  • Patent number: 4410717
Abstract: Tetraesters of pyromellitic dianhydride are disclosed wherein two ester moieties are saturated hydrocarbon groups and two ester moieties are halohydroxyalkyl groups. The compounds may be used as diluents for fluorinated pyromellitates that are useful as soil and water repelling agents. Mixtures formed by dissolving the compounds of this invention and known fluorinated pyromellitates in a common solvent are capable of imparting soil and water repelling properties to various fibers that are essentially equivalent to soil and water repelling properties imparted to such fibers by fluorinated pyromellitates alone. Additionally, the hydrocarbon pyromellitates of this invention may be used alone as water repellents.
