Abstract: Provided are systems and methods for the post-treatment of dry adhesive microstructures. The microstructures may be post-treated to comprise mushroom-like flaps at their tips to interface with the contact surface. In some aspects, a change in material composition of the microstructures in a dry adhesive may affect mechanical properties to enhance or diminish overall adhesive performance. For example, conductive additives can be added to the material to improve adhesive performance. In other aspects, microstructures comprising conductive material may allow for pre-load engagement sensing systems to be integrated into the microstructures.

  • Patent number: 9950832
Abstract: An ecology stay-on tab beverage can end has a first axis extending though a rivet. A tear panel is defined by a frangible score and a non-frangible hinge that joins a first end of the frangible score with a second end of the frangible score. The first axis forms a line of asymmetry of the tear panel. A second axis intersects the first axis at a right angle. An intersection of the first axis with the second axis defines a center point of a clock-like reference having a 12 o'clock position at the first point and a 6 o'clock position at the second point. A first radius of curvature of the frangible score between a 5 o'clock position and a 7 o'clock position is at least 3.6 times larger than a second radius of curvature between a 7 o'clock position and a 9 o'clock position.

The separation station separates the plurality of end perforations in at least one film layer of the trip to form a plurality of bag openings. The plurality of end perforation are torn by the separation station, which includes manipulating the rotation of a main roller, a pressure roller and at least one separation roller.

Abstract: An apparatus for placing preformed bags having an open end and a closed end over an insertion tube for inserting a bale therethrough and into the bag. A plurality of fingers are inserted into the bag open end and are extended for engaging the bag. The fingers and bag opening are traversed to the tube thereby inserting the tube end into the bag opening. The fingers are retracted and removed from the bag. The insertion tube is expanded thereby engaging the interior surface of the bag. Roller drive wheels are placed on the bag over the insertion tube and are rotatably driven and are traversed along the insertion tube for collecting the bag thereon. The roller drive wheels and the plurality of fingers are carried on a common assembly movable along the insertion tube.

Abstract: An apparatus for separating the bag walls of preformed bags having an open end and a closed end for use in an apparatus for enveloping bales of material. The bag walls are initially adjacent one another. Vacuum and grip pin assemblies are provided on jaws which are movable between retracted and closed positions. The jaws are closed onto the bag walls and a vacuum is applied to vacuum inlet openings drawing the bag walls thereto. Preferably, the jaws are partially separated and then a grip pin is extended adjacent the vacuum inlet openings thereby piercing and securely gripping the walls. The jaws are then retracted thereby fully separating the bag walls and opening the bag. Preferably, the vacuum inlet openings are saddle shaped having a rim defining aligned raised sides and aligned lowered sides therebetween, and the grip pin extends along the aligned raised sides.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing mail is provided. Mail is placed into an input been having a conveyor that conveys the mail towards a feeder. The feeder serially feeds the envelopes to a cutter that severs the top edge of the envelopes. A transport conveys the envelopes from the top cutter to an extractor. The extractor opens the edge-severed mail and presents the contents of the envelopes to an operator who manually extracts the contents. From the extractor, the operator manually feeds the extracted documents to a document input. From the document input, the documents are fed to a document transport that conveys the documents past an imaging module to obtain image data for the documents before sorting the documents to output bins.

Abstract: A box with a sliding opening has an integral liner to keep pourable contents fresh and dry. The box has a slide that is moveable by a user's thumb across the opening to open and close the box and the liner during the same operation to avoid risking tearing the box liner. The user can open the box and the liner to pour out the contents in one motion and easily close and seal the box and the liner so the contents do not spill out. Advantageously, the box is formed from a single blank piece of cardboard or similar stock, and a single planar sheet of moisture impervious material adhered onto the blank which folds with the blank to form a sealed liner or bag, such that the slide ends up inside the box for easy assembly with a resulting sealed bag inside.

Abstract: A container lid (10) includes a conventional main or pour opening, a vent opening separate from the main opening, and a mechanically attached tab (50) to create the openings. A vent score (40) defines the shape of the vent opening, and a vent panel (38) covers the vent opening. A mouth score (26) defines the shape of the pour opening, and a mouth panel (28) covers the pour opening. The action of creating the main opening using the tab (50) causes a moustache score (46) to break and create a vent opening in the same action. When the tab is returned to its original orientation the vent opening may be further enlarged by engaging a raised section on the vent panel (42) and the tab (50), by engaging a vent depressing means (44) on the tab (50) to the vent panel (38), or a combination of the two.
