Abstract: The invention relates to the preparation of halogenated imides derived from hydrazine and halogenated dicarboxylic acid anhydride and which can be used as flameproofing agents for plastics. The condensation of hydrazine and halogenated dicarboxylic acid anhydride is carried out in an aqueous medium, at a temperature ranging from 40.degree. to 225.degree. C., with a molar ratio of anhydride/hydrazine substantially equal to 2.

Abstract: An anthraquinone compound represented by formula: ##STR1## wherein R and X are as defined in the specification, and a polarizing film containing the same. The anthraquinone compound exhibits satisfactory compatibility with organic polymers and high dichroism, and the polarizing films have excellent performance characteristics.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of dyes of formula (1) as indicated in claim 1 or of mixtures of such dyes is described. The dyes of formula (1) are obtained by reacting 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone-2,3-dicarboximide, or the corresponding monoimino compound, with an amine and in the absence of a solvent. Dye mixtures are prepared by subsequently partially transamidating the resultant product.
Abstract: A novel process for the preparation of a 16-imino-17-aza-steroid of the formula ##STR1## wherein A is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and tritium comprising reacting a compound of the formula ##STR2## wherein A has the above definition and R is an acyl of an organic carboxylic acid of 1 to 8 carbon atoms with an oximation agent to obtain a compound of the formula ##STR3## reacting the latter with an agent to form an acid chloride to obtain a compound of the formula ##STR4## reacting the latter with ammonia to obtain a compound of the formula ##STR5## reacting the latter with an alkali metal hypohalite in the presence of a base to obtain a compound of the formula ##STR6## wherein X is a halogen and reacting the latter with a base to obtain the desired compound and the novel compound of formula I wherein A is tritium and the novel intermediates of formulae III, IV, V and VI.
Abstract: Polyimido-ester compounds having the formula RO--C(O)--R.sub.1 --C(O)--OR are disclosed wherein R is an alkylene N-dicarboximido radical containing cycloolefinic unsaturation and R.sub.1 is the divalent residue of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid such as fumaric, itaconic, aconitic, mesaconic, or glutaconic acid. These compounds are blended with unsaturated resins such as unsaturated polyester resin or vinyl ester resin, and polymerizable unsaturated monomers such as styrene to provide thermosettable resin compositions which can be cured to provide castings or laminates with improved resistance to thermal aging.

Abstract: An improvement in the process for the preparation of dispersed dyes of compounds of the formula ##STR1## where X is >O or >NH and R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl of 3 to 12 carbon atoms in total, C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, phenoxy-C.sub.2 - or-C.sub.3 -alkyl, phenyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or phenyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-C.sub.2 - or -C.sub.3 -alkyl, by reacting a compound I where R is H with an amine of the formula R-NH.sub.2 in a liquid under the influence of heat, wherein the reaction is carried out in water, in the presence or absence of a cationic or non-ionic surfactant.Very pure dyes are obtained with a high space/time yield.
Abstract: A simplified method is provided for making aromatic bis-etherphthalimides by employing a polychlorinated C.sub.(1-3) alkane solution of nitro-N-organophthalimide directly with alkali metal bisphenoxide salt in a refluxing nonpolar organic solvent. After the polychlorinated C.sub.(1-3) alkane has completely distilled from the mixture, a phase transfer catalyst is added. As a result, the requirement for isolating and handling nitro-N-organophthalimide solids prior to condensation with alkali metal bisphenoxide salts is thereby eliminated.

Abstract: Novel, unsaturated diacetylene-terminated polyimides and processes for their preparation are disclosed herein. These new polyimides are derivatives of anhydride-terminated aromatic polyimides from which they can be prepared by amidation to provide new unsaturated amide groups having a terminal group containing the structure --C.tbd.C--C.tbd.C--, hereinafter sometimes referred to as "conjugated diynes". These new compositions are more tractable than the original anhydride-terminated polyimides and can be converted at appropriate lower temperatures to crosslinked, insoluble, infusible polymers without by-product formation, thereby extending greatly the applications for which the aromatic polyimides can be employed. Moreover, these new polyimides can undergo the Diels-Alder type of addition with a large number of dienophiles. Certain monomeric materials are also described.
