Abstract: This invention relates to a process for converting a hydrocarbon reactant to a product comprising an oxygenate or a nitrile, the process comprising: (A) flowing a reactant composition comprising the hydrocarbon reactant, and oxygen or a source of oxygen, and optionally ammonia, through a microchannel reactor in contact with a catalyst to convert the hydrocarbon reactant to the product, the hydrocarbon reactant undergoing an exothermic reaction in the microchannel reactor; (B) transferring heat from the microchannel reactor to a heat exchanger during step (A); and (C) quenching the product from step (A).

Abstract: There is a significant demand for organic nitriles, based on their versatility in reactions. Compounds prepared from nitriles have properties including superoxide inhibition, ferrielectric liquid crystal dopant, antipicornaviral agents, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-asthma agents, and fibringoen antagonists. The present invention discloses a facile synthesis for 2,4-dihydroxybenzonitrile, and ethers and diethers thereof, from 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde or 2,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde. The present invention also discloses a method of preparing a class of iron chelating agents related to desferrithiocin, all of which contain a thiazoline ring. In this method, 2,4-dihydroxybenzonitrile is condensed with (S)-2-methylcysteine.

Abstract: Novel process steps and novel processes for producing unsubstituted and substituted meta- and para-cyano benzoic acid compounds, as well as salts and derivatives thereof, and intermediates therefor which are useful as intermediates for producing platelet aggregation inhibitors. Further disclosed are processes for producing bicyclic and heterocyclic cyano substituted compounds also having a carboxyl group attached to the same ring structure.

Abstract: A low temperature, solution phase process for synthesizing nitriles such as acrylonitrile and benzylnitrile is provided which makes use of a transition metal complex bearing an imido moiety to form a final nitrile corresponding to the moiety. In practice, a solution of a transition metal complex is formed in a non-interfering solvent, and the solution is reacted under time and temperature conditions to form the desired nitrile. The solution may also contain a base such as pyridine.
