Abstract: A method for the continuous, catalytic production of an aromatic carboxylic acid product by liquid-phase, exothermic oxidaion of an aromatic alkyl with an oxygen-containing gas and a solvent medium in an oxidation reactor and utilizing reverse osmosis is disclosed. In particular, a multiple ingredient or component-containing slurry product stream is withdrawn from the reactor, the slurry product stream is then separated to produce a product-containing stream and at least one mother liquor stream which contains, in addition to a number of desirable process stream components, such as oxidation reaction catalysts, a number of undesirable process stream impurities. The impurities are selectively removed from the mother liquor stream by passing at least a portion of the mother liquor stream through a reverse osmosis separation device to produce a catalyst-bearing stream having a relatively lesser impurities-to-catalyst weight ratio and a purge stream having a relatively greater impurities-to-catalyst weight ratio.
Abstract: Novel 4,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid derivatives. These compounds can be prepared by reacting a cyclohexanone-4-carboxylic acid with a phenol.
Abstract: There is provided a novel process for the preparation of carboxylic acids from alkyl groups under basic conditions utilizing oxides of copper, cobalt and silver.
Abstract: A process and intermediates for preparing 6-(lower alkoxy)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1-naphthalenecarboxylic acid derivatives are disclosed. The derivatives are useful for preparing aldose reductase inhibitors. With reference to the process, 1,1,1-trifluoro-5-(2-methylphenyl)-2,3-pentadione 3-oxime is cyclized to give a key intermediate 3,4-dihydro-1-hydroxy-5-methyl-1-(trifluoromethyl)-2(1H)-naphthalenone oxime; and 3,4-dihydro-1-hydroxy-5-methyl-1-(trifluoromethyl)-2(1H)-naphthalenone is aromatized to 5-methyl-1-(trifluoromethyl)-2-naphthalenol with a dehydrating agent.

Abstract: The invention concerns novel 2-[4-(4-chlorophenyl)benzyloxy]acetic acids of the formula: ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is hydrogen or (1-4C)alkyl, R.sup.2 is phenyl optionally bearing a halogeno substituent, and R.sup.3 is hydrogen or (1-4C)alkyl, and when R.sup.3 is hydrogen pharmaceutically acceptable base-addition salts thereof; and processes for their manufacture. The compounds possess useful anti-arthritic properties coupled with desirable pharmacokinetic properties and the minimum of adverse properties, and the invention also concerns pharmaceutical compositions of such compounds for use in the treatment of arthritic joint diseases. A typical compound of the invention is 2-[4-(4-chlorophenyl)benzyloxy]-2-phenyl propionic acid.
Abstract: The invention concerns novel hydroxyalkanoic acid derivatives of the formula: ##STR1## in which A is a straight or branched chain (2-6C)alkylene, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently hydrogen or (1-6C) alkyl, and R.sup.3 is hydrogen or (1-6C)alkyl, and when R.sup.3 is hydrogen, base-addition salts thereof; and processes for their manufacture. The compounds possess useful anti-arthritic properties and the invention also concerns pharmaceutical compositions of such compounds for use in the treatment of arthritic joint diseases. A representative compound of the invention is 2-{2-[4-(4-chlorophenyl)phenyl]-ethoxy}propionic acid.
Abstract: The invention refers to an improved process for the recovery of the solvent and of the by-produced methylacetate in the synthesis of terephthalic acid, said synthesis being usually consisting of an oxidation of paraxylene with air, in the presence of a catalyst system composed by cobalt, manganese and bromine, in a solvent consisting of acetic acid, according to the equation (1):C.sub.6 H.sub.4 (CH.sub.3).sub.2 +3 O.sub.2 .fwdarw.C.sub.6 H.sub.4 (COOH).sub.2 =2 H.sub.
