Abstract: Production of a dihydroxy arylophenone by reacting a diaryl carbonate in the presence of a fluoroalkane sulphonic acid. The diaryl carbonate is preferably diphenyl carbonate, the product so formed being 4,4'-dihydroxy-benzophenone. The sulphonic acid is preferably trifluoromethane sulphonic acid.
Abstract: A process and intermediates for preparing 6-(lower alkoxy)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1-naphthalenecarboxylic acid derivatives are disclosed. The derivatives are useful for preparing aldose reductase inhibitors. With reference to the process, 1,1,1-trifluoro-5-(2-methylphenyl)-2,3-pentadione 3-oxime is cyclized to give a key intermediate 3,4-dihydro-1-hydroxy-5-methyl-1-(trifluoromethyl)-2(1H)-naphthalenone oxime; and 3,4-dihydro-1-hydroxy-5-methyl-1-(trifluoromethyl)-2(1H)-naphthalenone is aromatized to 5-methyl-1-(trifluoromethyl)-2-naphthalenol with a dehydrating agent.

Abstract: Process for the concurrent synthesis of benzophenone, anthraquinone, and o-dibenzoylbenzene by pyrolysis of benzoic acid salts of yttrium, erbium, and dysprosium and mixtures thereof at temperatures of from about 200.degree. C. to 500.degree. C. and a pressure of about 0.1 to about 100 atmospheres. In an alternative method, a benzoic acid compound is passed through an oxide of yttrium, erbium, dysprosium and mixtures thereof in the presence of steam.
Abstract: Compounds of formula I wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each selected from halomethyl and halo and R is nitro, cyano, lower alkoxycarbonyl, lower alkylcarbonyl, or di- or trifluoromethyl, and n has a value of zero to four, and compositions comprising them are useful as insecticides in agriculture, horticulture and other outlets. They may optionally be combined with other pesticides and/or synergists. The compounds may be prepared by conventional esterification processes from the corresponding acids and appropriately substituted benzyl alcohols or halides, some of which are novel.
Abstract: Styryl-cyclopropane derivatives of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.9 represents independently of one another when n=2, halogen, cyano, nitro, or an optionally halogen-substituted alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio or alkylenedioxy radical,n represents zero, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5,R.sup.10 represents hydrogen or halogenandY represents acetyl, cyano or carbamoyl, are produced by reacting a benzylphosphonic acid ester of the formula ##STR2## in which R.sup.4 each independently represents alkyl or phenyl or together represent alkylene, with a formylcyclopropane derivative of the formula ##STR3## or by reacting an .alpha.-hydroxyphosphonic acid ester of the formula ##STR4## with an olefinating agent of the formula ##STR5## in which Z' represents a phosphorus-containing radical ##STR6## wherein R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are identical or different and individually represent alkyl, phenyl, alkoxy or pehnoxy or R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 together represent alkanedioxy,R.sup.

Abstract: A method of preparing substituted acylbenzenes is disclosed. The method comprises reacting selected acylhalides or equivalents with a selected poly-substituted benzene in the presence of an acylating catalyst comprising a clay.
Abstract: The explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) is desensitized by dissolving it in oleum of from 10 to 40% (by weight) in strength. The solutions formed preferably contain at least 400 g and at most 480 g of dissolved TNT per liter of oleum in oleum of 20-25% strength. They are especially useful for the preparation of phloroglucinol.
Abstract: 5-(2,4-difluorophenyl)salicylic acid, an anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, analgesic agent is prepared by: (1) diazotizing 2,4-difluoroaniline in the presence of benzene to yield 2,4-difluorobiphenyl; (2) Friedel-Crafts acylation to produce 2',4'-difluoro-4-alkanoylbiphenyl; (3) oxidation of the alkanoyl group to produce 2',4'-difluoro-4-alkanoyloxybiphenyl; (4) hydrolysis of the alkanoyl group to produce 4-(2,4-difluorophenyl)phenol; and (5) Kolbe-Schmitt carboxylation to produce the final product.
