Abstract: Dehydrating decomposition of compound (I), i.e. gem-diol, hemi-acetal or hemi-ketal, by contact with sulfuric acid gives a carbonyl compound (II). ##STR1## Disclosed is a two-stage process in which the first stage is the contact of compound (I) with sulfuric acid at 90.degree.-140.degree. C. so as to partly decompose and dehydrate the compound (I), permitting the concentration of sulfuric acid to become lower than 93 wt. % but not lower than 65 wt. %, and the second stage is the contact of the product of the first-stage reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid at a temperature not higher than 60.degree. C., preventing the concentration of sulfuric acid from becoming lower than 93 wt %. For example, hexafluoroacetone is obtained from a hydrate thereof by this process using only a small amount of sulfuric acid.
Abstract: 2,2'-bipyridinium chlorochromate has been found to be an effective oxidizing agent, particularly for the conversion of primary or secondary alcohols to their respective aldehydes or ketones.
Abstract: A process for removing alkynes from hydrocarbon mixtures, particularly those containing butadiene by reacting the alkynes with hydroxyl group containing organic compounds in the presence of a silver exchanged ion-exchange resin and separating the products formed from the unreacted components of said mixture.

Abstract: Compounds of the structure ##STR1## wherein X is --F or Cl and each R is independently --H, --CH.sub.3, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3 or M where M is an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, ammonium or a quaternary ammonium are disclosed. The above compounds are prepared by treating a compound of the structure ##STR2## where each R.sup.1 is independently --CH.sub.3, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3 or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3 ; or ##STR3## with a strong protic acid, followed, as desired, by base hydrolysis to form carboxylate salts (R.dbd.M).
Abstract: Hydrogenation-dehydrogenation of suitable feedstock is provided wherein such feedstock is subjected to hydrogenation-dehydrogenation conditions in the presence of a catalytic amount of a solid containing, at least in part, a synthetic amorphous solid prepared by hydrolyzing and polymerizing in the presence of water a silane having the formula R(Si)X.sub.3, wherein R is a nonhydrolyzable organic group, X is a hydrolyzable group and (Si) is selected from the group consisting of ##STR1## and calcining the polymerized product, said silane being admixed with a second component, R'.sub.n MY.sub.m, wherein R' is selected from the group consisting of the same groups as R, Y is selected from the group consisting of the same groups as X and oxygen, M is at least one member selected from the group consisting of the elements of Groups IIIA, IVA, VA, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB and VIII of the Periodic Table, m is any number greater than 0 and up to 8 and n is from 0 to any number less than 8.
