Reinforcing Or Tire Cords Patents (Class 57/902)
  • Patent number: 6745806
Abstract: The invention improves rubber permeability while making a cord diameter compact. A metal cord is constituted by a layered structure having a core comprising totally 6 to 12 filaments sectioned into 1 to 4 filament bundles, and a sheath comprising 8 to 15 filaments arranged around the core. Each of the filament bundles includes a waved filament modeled in a two-dimensional wave shape and a non-waved filament, in a state before being bundled. The core makes the wave of the waved filament three-dimensional within the core by applying torsion to each of the filament bundles.

  • Patent number: 6695025
Abstract: The tire (70) of the invention incorporates a carcass ply cord material (93) with variable modulus of elasticity to provide an active sidewall structure (82a, 82b). The variable modulus cord material is incorporated in the axially outwardmost ply (90) of a carcass (80) having two plies (88, 90) separated by elastomeric inserts (89a, 89b) in the sidewalls (82a, 82b). The outer ply cord material (93) provides an increased modulus of elasticity with an increase in elongation. The inner ply cords (91) have a modulus that substantially exceeds that of the outer ply cords (93) under normal loads in the inflated mode. Thus, the inner ply (88) dominates the structural response of the sidewalls (82a, 82b) at normal loads in the inflated mode. Under severe sidewall deflection, such as when the tire is uninflated, the outer ply cord (93) is elongated, increasing its modulus of elasticity and thus, shifting the load from the axially inwardmost ply (88) to the axially outwardmost ply (90).

  • Patent number: 6530410
Abstract: As the present invention there is disclosed a pneumatic radial tire comprising a carcass having a smaller tensile rigidity than that of conventional pneumatic radial tires by application of a steel cord having a smaller Young's modulus to the carcass or by application of a smaller amount of a high strength steel cord formed with carcass filaments having a greater tensile strength to the carcass while maintaining the necessary strength of the carcass. In accordance with the present invention, extension of the carcass increases and extension of a belt in the circumferential direction of the tire is suppressed when the tire is inflated by an inner pressure. As a result, compression stress working on the carcass when a vehicle turns decreases and buckling deformation of the steel cord can be prevented. Accordingly, durability is improved.

  • Patent number: 6098393
Abstract: The present invention relates to a high strength steel cord(1) for pneumatic tires, which is produced by the process of drawing high strength carbon steel with carbon content of 0.91.about.2.0% by weight, plating brass on the surface of the carbon steel so that it adheres to the rubber and repeating the drawing and stranding of said carbon steel. In particular, as the steel cord is composed of a filament of two strips, the steel cord according to the present invention is of a higher strength than conventional steel cord, and therefore when it is applied to a tire, the amount of steel cord and rubber topping used can be reduced, thereby resulting in a lighter weight tire, cost savings and lower fuel consumption rate.

  • Patent number: 6076344
Abstract: Process for producing a steel cord for pneumatic tires comprising a bunch of wires, the core of which consists of wire filaments 10 arranged bunched juxtaposed in parallel. Preferably at least three wire filaments 10, 20 are provided, at least two wire filaments located juxtaposed in parallel being spirally shaped as core filaments 10 forming a core 60 and at least one wire filament spirally surrounding the two core filaments 10 as a sheathing wire 20. Spirally shaping the wire filaments 10 is achieved in accordance with the invention by false twisters 40. Due to this spiral shaping of the wire filaments 10 migration of the filaments from the core composite is avoided more particularly. The residual torsional stresses of the core filaments among each other and in conjunction with the restoring forces of the sheathing wire are advantageously cancelled. In addition, the steel cord features to advantage a flattened, more particularly, oval shape.

  • Patent number: 6021633
Abstract: A cord comprising at least a first pair and a second pair of wires (2a, 2b) of different diameter randomly disposed in transverse cross section thereof, is obtained by arranging in a nacelle (7) of a double-twisting laying machine, a twister (16) operating upstream of a preformer (15). The twister (16), rotating in a direction opposite to that of the impeller (5) and at a speed which is twice that of the impeller, neutralizes the internal torsional stresses induced in the wires (2a, 2b) by effect of the double twisting carried out upon the action of the impeller itself. Thus, a better control of the preforming operation executed on the wires (2a, 2b) disposed parallel in respectively coplanar axes is enabled.
