Abstract: A steel cord, for use in the reinforcement of resilient articles such as rubber tyres, comprises a central bundle of wires surrounded by a circumferential layer of helicoidally twisted wires. In the central bundle, one can distinguish a core and a surrounding layer, the latter having the same twist pitch as the circumferential layer. In order to reduce wire migration, the wires of the central bundle show a limited number of relative position changes, between 2 and 300 per 30 cm cord length.

  • Patent number: 4627229
Abstract: A steel cord for use in the reinforcement of resilient articles such as rubber tires has a core and one surrounding layer of wires, the diameter and twist pitch of the core wires being substantially different from the diameter and twist pitch of the wires of the layer surrounding the core. This construction eliminates wire migration without loss of reinforcing ability of the cord in the resilient material.

  • Patent number: 4623011
Abstract: A tire-reinforcing dip cord composed of nylon 6 and/or nylon 66 fiber is described. The dip cord has (1) a strength at break of at least 8.2 g/d, (2) an elongation of at least 18% under a load of 8 g/d, (3) a gradient not larger than 0.75 in the load-elongation curve immediately before break, and (4) a cord diameter variation ratio (D/D.sub.o) (D=cord diameter under a load of 450 g and D.sub.o =cord diameter under no load) not larger than 0.65. The dip cord is prepared by treating a nylon 6 and/or nylon 66 cord yarn with an adhesive wherein at least one of the following processes (i) and (ii) is employed: (i) the adhesive treatment is carried out under elongation of at least 3%, and (ii) as the adhesive, a liquid mixture of a resorcinol/formaldehyde (R/F) condensate and a rubber latex is used, in which at least 20 wt. % of the condensate has a R/F molar ratio of 1/1.9-1/1.

  • Patent number: 4601165
Abstract: A reinforcing cord for elastomeric products is produced by feeding a plurality of single metal wires of the same diameter into a set of successively arranged stranding points. At least two wires are fed into the first stranding point and through the subsequent stranding points. Additional wires are fed into the respective subsequent stranding points. The quantity of wires fed to the stranding points is determined by the number of valleys which are present in the peripheral contour of the processed strand at this particular stranding point. In this manner each additional wire is brought in contact with at least two preceding wires in the processed strand.

  • Patent number: 4543298
Abstract: The present invention relates to the improvement of metal cords for the reinforcement of elastomeric bodies, in particular of vehicle tires which are provided with retaining helixes on their outsides. The problem was to avoid the disadvantageous properties of the retaining helixes in reinforced elastomeric bodies, namely, the impairment of the inherent elasticity of the metal cord and the fretting of the retaining helixes on the outer layer of the metal cord. The problem particularly resided in the improvement of socalled compact cords, meaning cords consisting of layers of identical twisting sense. For the solution of this problem, it is proposed to provide a core strand of shorter twisting pitch (twisting pitch ratio of preferably 1:2 or less) than the twisting pitch of the adjacent outer layer; this in particular in the case of metals cords having more than two layers.
