  • Patent number: 9011318
Abstract: A highly articulated robotic probe (HARP) is comprised of a first mechanism and a second mechanism, one or both of which can be steered in desired directions. Each mechanism can alternate between being rigid and limp. In limp mode the mechanism is highly flexible. When one mechanism is limp, the other is rigid. The limp mechanism is then pushed or pulled along the rigid mechanism. The limp mechanism is made rigid, thereby assuming the shape of the rigid mechanism. The rigid mechanism is made limp and the process repeats. These innovations allow the device to drive anywhere in three dimensions. The device can “remember” its previous configurations, and can go anywhere in a body or other structure (e.g. jet engine). When used in medical applications, once the device arrives at a desired location, the inner core mechanism can be removed and another functional device such as a scalpel, clamp or other tool slid through the rigid sleeve to perform.

As the air is evacuated through the inlet/outlet part 22 to change the pressurized condition of the closed space 21 from an atmospheric pressure condition to a negative pressure condition, the closing cover 18 reduces its diameter around an axis 4, and the latching member 7 is caused to engage with the latching-member receiving part 11.

Abstract: An endoscope includes a second bending drive mechanism. The second bending drive mechanism passively bends the second bending portion in accordance with external force when the drive force is not transmitted to the first bending portion. The second bending drive mechanism bends the second bending portion in a predetermined direction in a case that the second bending portion has received external force in the predetermined direction, and generates force against the external force in a direction different from the predetermined direction in the second bending portion in a case that the second bending portion has received the external force in the different direction while the drive force to bend the first bending portion in the predetermined direction has been transmitted to the first bending portion.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing loops formed during endoscopic procedures including colonoscopy and small bowel enteroscopy. The device inserted through the biopsy channel of an endoscope reversibly engages the distal portion of the biopsy channel of the endoscope. When pressure is applied to the device handle external to the endoscope, the force is transmitted to the distal end of the endoscope advances and straightens out the loop. When the device is torqued, the distal end of the engaged endoscope torques which can remove a twist in the endoscope as well. Neither procedure requires removal of a portion of the scope or loss of position which occurs with conventional methods.

Abstract: A controllable sheath for optimizing the control of surgical instruments at the operation site includes a flexible sheath surrounding an endoscope and including a lumen extending along the walls of the sheath and adjacent to the endoscope. The lumen permits the passage of surgical instruments from the proximal end of the endoscopic device to the operation site. The lumen extends beyond the distal end of the endoscope and deflects at the distal end as desired by the operator's manipulation of a controller device. This distal end deflection may occur through various different techniques where the ability to deflect the lumen gives the operator increased control and maneuverability over the surgical implements located in the lumen. Depending upon the particular requirements of the surgical procedure, the controllable sheath may include any number of lumens capable of distal end deflection.
