Patent number: 6290708Abstract: A hernia patch has a first layer of inert synthetic mesh material selectively sized and shaped to extend across and beyond a hernia. A second layer of inert synthetic mesh material overlies the first layer to create a generally planar configuration for the patch. The first and second layers are joined together by a seam that defines a periphery of a pouch between the layers and provides stiffness to the patch for urging the patch to conform to the generally planar configuration across the hernia, which helps to prevent folding of the patch as the surgeon withdraws his or her finger. The seam may be straight, zig-zag, sinusoidal or other configurations that effectively urge the patch to conform to a planar configuration. One of the layers has a border that extends beyond the seam and that has a free outer edge. A plurality of border slits extend from the outer edge through the border substantially to the seam.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Bard ASDI Inc.Inventors: Robert D. Publication number: 20010018566Abstract: A hospital type of bandage integrates an absorbent pad and non-stick layer with a fluid-impermeable outer layer and an adhesive in a single composite structure. In a preferred embodiment the invention further includes means which may be used to turn the bandage inside out upon removal, so that surfaces once contacting a patient are no longer externally exposed. A bandage according to the invertible embodiment preferably includes a pocket formed on the side of the bandage facing away from the patient after application, this pocket being large enough to accommodate at least a portion of a human hand, and inside this pocket and located opposite the entrance is a means for grasping which may be pulled outwardly through pocket opening, thereby inverting the entire structure. Patent number: 6224616Abstract: A method for repairing a hernia uses a mesh patch for permanent placement within a patient's body space. The patch has top and bottom mesh layers secured to each other with a seam. The seam surrounds and defines a pocket. The top layer has a transverse slit opening into the pocket. To serve a spring function, an implantable loop is inserted into the pocket to keep the patch expanded under tension in a planar configuration. A border on at least one of the layers extends outward past the seam. The border preferably has slits to fill uneven voids in the patient's tissue and fit more tightly. A surgeon makes a small incision in the patient and performs a dissection deep into the patient's preperitoneal space, creating a pocket in this space into which the patch is to be inserted. The patch is folded and directed into the patient's preperitoneal space, where it is unfolded and expanded into its planar configuration to cover the defect in the patient.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1999Date of Patent: May 1, 2001Assignee: Bard ASDI Inc.Inventor: Robert D. Patent number: 5935091Abstract: The present invention relates to a haemostatic circumcision bandage comprising a bandage body made of a pliable waterproof material and of a unitary configuration. The bandage has a shaft supporting portion adapted to be wrapped around an entire penile shaft protecting it against contamination and a body attachment portion connected to the shaft supporting portion, which is adapted to be temporarily attached to a wearer's body and provided to keep the bandage in place. The bandage also has a resilient pad placed on the shaft supporting portion, which is adapted to facilitate haemostasis by means of applying a gentle even compression, as well as an absorbent pad placed over the resilient pad, which is provided to help absorb blood and promote healing a wound caused by circumcision.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1997Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Inventor: Jack Friedman

Patent number: 5925439Abstract: A liquid-absorbent sanitary cellulose product, in particular a diaper, sanitary napkin or the like, comprises a liquid-proof back layer (2) and an absorbent body (3). A storage layer (5) is arranged between the absorbent body (3) and the back layer (2), this storage layer (5) consisting of a layer of non-woven material (6) profiled in the direction of thickness (D) of the product by chamber-like impressions (7) being formed, into each of which are inserted super-absorbent hydrogel particles (8).Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1997Date of Patent: July 20, 1999Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventor: Klaus Karl Ferdinand Haubach

Patent number: 5916225Abstract: A hernia patch has a first layer of inert synthetic mesh material selectively sized and shaped to extend across and beyond a hernia. A second layer of inert synthetic mesh material overlies the first layer to create a generally planar configuration for the patch. The first and second layers are joined together by a seam which defines a periphery of a pouch between the layers. One of the layers has a border which extends beyond the seam and which has a free outer edge. A plurality of border slits extend from the outer edge through the border substantially to the seam. An access slit is formed in one of the layers for insertion of a finger of a surgeon into the pouch to allow the surgeon to deform the planar configuration of the patch to facilitate insertion of the patch into the patient and to position the patch across the hernia.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1998Date of Patent: June 29, 1999Assignee: Surgical Sense, Inc.Inventor: Robert D. Patent number: 5910125Abstract: The dressing system of the present invention provides, in one aspect, a composite dressing that allows a wound to be dressed in one easy step and redressed without disturbing the wound. The composite dressing comprises a contact component having a bottom side facing a wound, and a top side. A dressing component is releasably attached to the top side of the contact component such that the dressing component can be readily separated from the contact component if pulled relative to the contact component. The contact component can remain on the wound to prevent disturbance, and another composite dressing or dressing component can be applied to the contact component.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1993Date of Patent: June 8, 1999Inventors: Gary Wayne Cummings, Robert Cummings

Patent number: 5902260Abstract: A thin film wound dressing is disclosed in which a thin, transparent, vapor-transmitting elastomeric film is coated along its underside with a suitable pressure-sensitive adhesive for securing the dressing to a patient's skin. Prior to use, the adhesive layer is protected by a removable release liner. The opposite (upper) surface of the film has a foraminous backing layer of flexible and stretchable material secured (preferably removably) thereto. The stretchable backing layer has a multiplicity of wide openings or foramina separated from each other by foam strip portions, and at least some of the strip portions preferably terminate in free ends along a peripheral edge of the film.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1997Date of Patent: May 11, 1999Assignee: Hollister IncorporatedInventors: Thomas H. Patent number: 5897516Abstract: An improved wound dressing is provided which comprises a backing layer bearing a reference marking, a hydrocolloid layer and a release layer. The hydrocolloid swells in use. This swelling can be seen or felt through the backing layer. When the swelling extends to or beyond the reference marking, the dressing should be changed to prevent leaking. Thus, the dressing can be left in place for as long as possible, but not so long as to damage the underlying skin.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1996Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Assignee: Bristol-Myers Squibb CompanyInventors: Marjory A.
