    Abstract: A method and device are disclosed for using electrochemistry to build and strengthen muscles by applying pulses of DC electrical charge, at a duration in the range of about 0.2 to about 1 millisecond and a frequency of at least 1000 Hertz, to the skin by means of an anodic probe overlying the motor endplate regions/neuromuscular junctions of the muscle at such a strength to cause the muscle to twitch or only slightly contract with each pulse. The DC is applied at current amplitude of from about 5 to about 25 milliamperes, and a voltage in the range of about 50 to about 120 volts. A DC power source is used to deliver the electrical charge, preferably of at least 3 watts.

A gasket made of an electrically non-conductive material is applied to the bottom outer surface of the housing. The gasket has apertures which are sized and shaped to receive the D-shaped electrodes. The shocking circuit employs three capacitors along with switching circuitry for selectively discharging the capacitors so as to generate the defibrillation pulse waveform. More specifically, the switching circuitry generates a first step of the pulse waveform by discharging the capacitors while connected in parallel, then generates a second step of the pulse waveform by discharging the capacitors while the two of the three capacitors are connected in parallel and the third is connected in series, and finally generates a third step of the pulse waveform by discharging the capacitors while connected in series.

    Abstract: Improved operating features for an electrotherapy device are provided by the use of a peel off detection system which monitors device operation and provides necessary corrective action where appropriate. More specifically, the electrotherapy device monitors the connection characteristics of the electrodes, in order to determine if acceptable connections are being maintained to the patient. In order to monitor these connections, a baseline signal measurement is made when the system is first started. Subsequent measurements are then compared to this baseline measurement, to insure that the magnitude stays within an acceptable range. If the measurement shows a non-acceptable connection condition, the electrotherapy device is shut down and appropriate warning signals are provided to the user. Where multiple output channels are used, isolation circuits are included in the feedback network in order to insure no signal coupling exists.

    Abstract: A method of eliciting analgesia in a human subject by Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TCES) is provided. Electrodes are secured to the skin of the subject's head and used to apply an electrical current to the electrodes. The current includes a direct current combined with rectangular current pulses (alternating current) delivered at a frequency of between 30 and 65 Hz. The frequency at which the pulses are delivered is periodically changed to a different value within the 30-65 Hz range. The total current supplied, a sum of the DC component and a Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) of the current pulses, preferably has a value between 0.2 and 20 mA. The method is used during surgery and the post-operative procedure, and may also be used to treat a wide variety of neurological and other conditions.

In a specific embodiment, the signal is processed to determine the start and end of beta cell depolarization, from which the depolarization duration is obtained. In order to reduce cardiac interference, each stimulus pulse is timed to be offset from the QRS signal which can interfere with the pancreas sensing. Additionally, the beta cell signals are processed by a correction circuit, e.g., an adaptive filter, to remove QRS artifacts, as well as artifacts from other sources, such as respiration.

Overcurrent detection and overvoltage detection is provided in hard wired fashion to assure rapid shutdown response. Diagnostic procedures as well as therapeutic procedures may be carried out with a system version which provides for the application of a stimulus in conjunction with safety monitoring and controller based development of stimulating waveforms, all of which exhibits no d.c. term.

The control pulse triggers dual trigger pulses. Each trigger pulse includes three monophasic pulses.
