Abstract: An artificial disc implant is described that comprises of two plates that have articulating surfaces interfacing with each other. In between the plates and surrounding the articulating surface is a flexible and elastic insert puck. The insert puck will have a hole that allows the two articulating surfaces to interact with one another. • Patent number: 7267691
Abstract: A cervical intervertebral prosthesis includes two cover plates which are each configured to be connected to adjacent vertebral bodies. At least one of the two cover plates has a toothed portion which faces toward the vertebral body and whose teeth have a steep, ventrally directed flank and a less steep, dorsally directed flank. When the prosthesis is fitted with sufficient pressing between its adjacent vertebral bodies, the combination of the serrated toothed portion and the abutment surface is sufficient to hold the prosthesis securely in the desired position. In many cases this makes it possible to dispense with additional screw fixation. The flange carrying the abutment surface is in this case expediently shortened so that it can be accommodated in a recess of the bone so that the prosthesis does not protrude ventrally beyond the ventral alignment surface of the adjacent vertebral bodies.

Abstract: A spinal implant is inserted between adjacent vertebrae to function as an disk prosthesis. The prosthesis has two plates fastened to adjacent vertebrae facing each other. The facing sides of the plates each have a depending skirt formed as concentric arcs of about 90 degrees. The skirts are either bowed or tapered in the axial direction. A protrusion is centrally located between the arcs on one plate and a depression is centrally located between the arcs of the other plate. The plates are oriented to each other with the concentric arcs of each interrupted skirt at 90 degrees and the protrusion is engaged in the depression. The plates are then rotated about 90 degrees and the opposed arcs of one plate interlock with the opposed arcs of the other plate to prevent separation in the axial direction.

Abstract: An artificial intervertebral disc includes housing members including spaced inner surfaces facing each other and oppositely facing outer surfaces for engaging spaced apart vertebral surfaces. Bearing surfaces extend from each of the inner surfaces for engaging each other while allowing for low friction and compression resistant movement of the housing members relative to each other while under compression. Load sharing pads are disposed between the inner surfaces and about at least a portion of the bearing surfaces for sharing absorption compressive loads with the bearing surfaces while limiting the relative movement of the housing members.

Abstract: An artificial disc having a pair of opposing baseplates, for seating against opposing vertebral bone surfaces, separated by a ball and socket joint that includes a ball compression locked to a post extending from one of the baseplates. The ball is captured within a curvate socket formed in a peak of a convex structure attached to the other of the baseplates. The socket is formed by opposing curvate surfaces, one on the convex structure and one on the other of the baseplates. The ball rotates and angulates in the socket. The ball and socket joint therefore permits the baseplates to rotate and angulate relative to one another.

Abstract: An artificial vertebral disk replacement implant is disclosed along with its method of operation and a method of implanting. The implant has first and second plates that each mate with a vertebral body. Each plate has one side for mating with a vertebral body. The first plate has a socket on one side, and the second plate has an elongated ball on one side. The ball of the first plate and the socket of the second plate form a ball-and-socket joint when the two plates are in contact with each other. The implant achieves a range of motion equivalent to a natural range of motion.

The socket is formed by opposing curvate surfaces, one on the convex structure and one on the other of the baseplates. While the ball angulates freely in the socket, the rotation of the ball in the socket has a limited range due to interference between an interference pin's rounded head that extends into the socket and a curvate recess on the ball. The ball and socket joint therefore permits the baseplates to rotate relative to one another through a limited range and also angulate relative to one another.
