Externally Mounted Locking Device Patents (Class 70/202)
  • Patent number: 5400626
Abstract: The subject invention is directed to a device for preventing the movement of a floor-mounted gear shift lever of an automobile from the "park" position to a position useful for operating the automobile. Five specific embodiments are of interest. The first embodiment includes an arcuate retaining lock which operates similar to a handcuff lock and which is mounted outside the gear shift lever console. The first embodiment includes a hingeable lock plate which is hingeably located behind the gear shift lever and which includes a semi-circular cutout portion for receiving the gear shift lever thereby preventing its rearward movement. The second embodiment utilizes a similarly operating locking member but is contained within the gear shift lever console so as to be hidden from view. The third embodiment includes a lever activated housing to enclose and disable a gas pedal. The fourth embodiment includes a housing to enclose a gear shift handle, thereby preventing unauthorized operation of the automobile.

  • Patent number: 5388435
Abstract: To prevent the unauthorized unlocking of van doors equipped with safety rod locks, the lever of the safety rod lock is held to the door by a retainer clip. The retainer clip has an extending tongue with apertures in it that passes through the door into the van. In the van, there is a dead bolt which may be actuated by a key cylinder inserted from outside the van through the door to cause the dead bolt to enter an aperture and lock the extending tongue of the retainer and hold the retainer in place so that the lever cannot be moved to unlock the safety rod lock. A second key actuated member or solenoid actuated member is actuated to move a cam in front of the first key slot so that it cannot be unlocked until the second cam lever is moved out of the way. Thus, a sequence must be followed using two different actuating means to unlock the door or lock the door.

  • Patent number: 5361613
Abstract: A vehicle anti-theft device including a gear shifter locking device for enclosing the handle of a vehicle gear shifter therein to prevent the usual shifting of the gear shifter, and a steering wheel locking device to prevent or limit the usual turning of the vehicle steering wheel. The gear shifter locking device includes two mating housing parts for enclosing the gear shifter handle therein, and a bar connecting the housing parts together, one bar end portion being slideably secured to one housing part, and the other housing part being rotatably secured to the opposite bar end portion. A locking mechanism coacts with the bar to lock the housing parts together. A coil spring is tensioned against the bar so that the two housing parts automatically separate apart from each other when unlocked by a key-operated lock mounted on one housing part. The housing parts can be provided with downwardly extending skirt portions to enclose the handle-carrying rod portion of the gear shifter.

  • Patent number: 4453750
Abstract: A lock holder including a latch assembly of the type primarily designed to maintain the handle structure of a removable automobile top in its locked or in-line position thereby avoiding the inadvertent or unauthorized removal of the top. An elongated channel or slot is integrally formed within the body of the holder so as to allow sliding engagement of the holder on the handle on the top and forcing it to maintain in its in-line and locked position. A latch assembly protrudes through the slot and separated portions of the handle and is latched on the body itself to prevent removal of the lock holder thereby preventing the handle from being positioned into its broken position allowing removal of the auto top.

  • Patent number: 4290568
Abstract: The device retains the ejection seat arm/dearm lever in safe position to allow the seat to be tilted safely for required maintenance and repair work. A bolt positioned through a clearance hole in an inverted U-shaped base member engages threads in the ejection seat structure. An upstanding brace extends upward from one end of the base member at an angle to abut the seat ejection arming lever to physically block and prevent its movement into the armed position. The bolt is retained in the base member by a cotter pin through the body of the bolt under the head to allow turning while preventing separation from the base.

  • Patent number: 4238940
Abstract: A self securing theft proof chain binder, such as would be used to cinch a chain tightly holding a cargo to a truck flatbed. The binder has hooks on either of its ends to attach to the ends of the chain overlapping the cargo and the binder is pivoted in the middle so that when it has been squeezed together it tightly draws together the two ends of the chain. The lever arm on the binder has a projecting spur with a notched tooth thereon which in turn mates with a lock on the other half of the binder so that when the two halves are squeezed together they lock in place.

  • Patent number: 4033158
Abstract: A steering column is pivotally fastened to a support structure and pivots between an operating position and a transmission locking position. A steering wheel is rotatably supported at the upper end of the steering column while a transmission shift lever is fastened at one side of the steering column and shiftable between a forward speed position, a neutral position and a reverse speed position. A latching mechanism is carried by the steering column and is engageable with one of a plurality of notches formed in a positioning rack secured to the support structure for latching the steering column in the transmission locking position and engageable with another of the notches for latching the steering column in the operating position. A transmission locking member is secured to the support structure and extends towards the transmission shift lever for abutment therewith when the steering column is in the transmission locking position for locking the transmission shift lever in the neutral position.

  • Patent number: 4015455
Abstract: A locking unit for immobilizing road vehicles to prevent their unauthorized removal comprises a sealed body which houses a movable locking member projecting from the housing and adapted for connection with a brake or clutch operating foot pedal or hand lever or with the control valve of an air-powered parking brake system. The sealed body also houses a key-released lock of the rotary barrel type having its plunger movable into locking engagement with the locking member manually without use of the key. The locking member may be a ratchet wheel engageable by a pawl which is pushed into engagement by the lock plunger acting on a spring. Further springs ensure the pawl being held clear of the wheel when the lock plunger is withdrawn. A modified form of the unit has a fixed jaw and a movable jaw by which the unit can be clamped around the stem of the draw-pin of a trailer vehicle and locked without using the key, thereby to prevent the hitch of a tractor from being coupled thereto.
