Abstract: In one embodiment, a navigation system may include one or more processors, a display, a satellite antenna, one or more memory devices, and map data. A route distance icon can be presented on the display, automatically, when the current location is not coincident with the route and the start offset distance is less than a predetermined distance. The route distance icon can provide the on-the-route distance. A geodesic distance icon can be presented on the display, automatically, when the current location is not coincident with the route and the start offset distance is greater than the predetermined distance. The geodesic distance icon can provide a geodesic distance from the current location to the destination.

Abstract: A navigation method for a vehicle includes receiving a destination inputted by a user and establishing a current position of a vehicle using a positioning device. Based on an electronic map, a route from the current position to the destination is determined and characteristic points of the determined route are extracted. A street view mapping of the determined route is acquired. Based on the street view mapping, and using a camera, a marker of each of the characteristic points is extracted using an image extraction method. When the vehicle arrives at each of the characteristic points, a prompt is output for the user by recognizing the marker of each of the characteristic points from the street view mapping.

  • Patent number: 8937546
Abstract: A weather alert manager is used to provide real-time, site specific information to a user regarding weather and possibly other hazards. The weather alert manager compares meteorological data, a user profile including information on points of interest to the user, and geographical data to determine if weather will impact one or more of the user's points of interest. The user's points of interest include at least one mobile point of interest, which periodically transmits its location. The weather alert manager transmits a user alert message if one is needed, and a remote receiver notifies the user that a message has been received.

Abstract: A method for providing navigation instructions on a device is described. As the device traverses a navigated route according to a first mode of transportation, the method displays a first turn-by-turn navigation presentation defined for the first mode. Based on data gathered by the device, the method determines that the device is navigating the route according to a second mode of transportation. The method automatically displays a second, different turn-by-turn navigation presentation defined for the second mode.

  • Patent number: 8903653
Abstract: As system for locating a network node may be implemented as a static network device for determining location of a mobile node. The system includes a transceiver for receiving a device identifier over a public network from the mobile node, the device identifier based on a user-configurable parameter and a non-user-configurable parameter of the mobile node, and a processor coupled to the transceiver and to memory containing executable code. When executed, the code effects method steps for: accessing, in response to the transceiver receiving the device identifier, a database of authorized device identifiers corresponding to known mobile nodes, establishing, in response to the device identifier matching one of the authorized device identifiers, a secure private network with the mobile node, and communicating with two additional static network devices, the three static network devices implementing triangulation to determine a location of the mobile node.

Abstract: A method for navigation of a vehicle using a navigation system with stored map data having road segments comprising determining a current road segment and a current position of the vehicle in the current road segment and receiving a user input command. The method determines a destination in the current road segment or in another road segment of a parallel lane of the current road segment, the determining being initiated by the input. A route from the current position to the destination is calculated in the absence of a turn-around maneuver within the current road segment.

Abstract: Systems and methods for estimating local traffic flow are described. One embodiment of a method includes determining a driving habit of a user from historical data, determining a current location of a vehicle that the user is driving, and determining a current driving condition for the vehicle. Some embodiments include predicting a desired driving condition from the driving habit and the current location, comparing the desired driving condition with the current driving condition to determine a traffic congestion level, and sending a signal that indicates the traffic congestion level.

Abstract: A portable navigation device and method are capable of presenting a destination direction to a user without resorting to visual sensation with a relatively simple configuration. Vibration elements are disposed on or in different positions of a housing. The respective vibration intensities of the vibration elements are determined on the basis of an angular difference ? between a destination direction Vn and a terminal direction Vd. The vibration elements are respectively controlled in accordance with the determined vibration intensities. The position of a vibration, which is obtained as a result of blending vibrations of the vibration elements is sensed by a user.
