Abstract: A system and method for generating a seamless road network of a large geographical area includes a plurality of GPS probe traces extending across a geographical area. The probe traces are divided into sub-sets base on criteria, such as accuracy. A plurality of threads simultaneously employ the sub-sets traces to generate an independent network of the entire geographical area. The networks generated using sub-sets having a high accuracy are preferred over networks generating using sub-sets having a lower accuracy. The independent networks are combined to form a seamless networks of road segments.

Abstract: Graph partitioning techniques are based on the notion of natural cuts. A filtering phase performs a series of minimum cut computations to identify and contract dense regions of the graph. This reduces the graph size significantly, but preserves its general structure. An assembly phase uses a combination of greedy and local search heuristics to assemble the final partition. The techniques may be used on road networks, which have an abundance of natural cuts (such as bridges, mountain passes, and ferries).

  • Patent number: 8725404
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for updating digital maps and for matching global navigation devices to a digital map. Such navigation devices rely upon GPS signals (20, 24) from satellites (22, 26). One well-documented cause of position error in navigation devices arises from the phenomenon of GPS multi-path. It has been observed that GPS multi-path errors in the latitude/longitude direction are highly correlated with errors in altitude. By comparing altitude value of GPS probe data with reference specifications for altitude, unreliable probe data (outliers) can be easily identified and culled. Such techniques can be used as well by a mobile navigation device to confirm a match to a particular road segment and if not revert to other positioning techniques such as inertial guidance systems and the like. If the local altitude is not reliably known, an estimation can be derived directly from the collected probe data.

Abstract: Disclosed is a feature for a vehicle that enables taking precautionary actions in response to conditions on the road network around or ahead of the vehicle, in particular, a blind intersection along a section of road. A database that represents the road network is used to determine locations where a blind intersection is located along a section of road. Then, precautionary action data is added to the database to indicate a location at which a precautionary action is to be taken about the blind intersection located along the section of road. A precautionary action system installed in a vehicle uses this database, or a database derived therefrom, in combination with a positioning system to determine when the vehicle is at a location that corresponds to the location of a precautionary action. When the vehicle is at such a location, a precautionary action is taken by a vehicle system as the vehicle is approaching a blind intersection.

Abstract: The class of k Nearest Neighbor (k NN) queries in spatial networks has been studied in the literature. Existing approaches for k NN search in spatial networks assume that the weight of each edge in the spatial network is constant. However, real-world edge-weights are time-dependent and vary significantly in short durations, hence invalidating the existing solutions. The problem of k NN search in time-dependent spatial networks, where the weight of each edge is a function of time, is addressed herein. Two indexing schemes (Tight Network Index and Loose Network Index) are proposed to minimize the number of candidate nearest neighbor objects and reduce the invocation of the expensive fastest-path computation in time-dependent spatial networks. We demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed solution via experimental evaluations with real-world data-sets, including a variety of large spatial networks with real traffic-data.

The system comprises a transparent overlay for transferring the mapped information, an alignment device for consistently aligning the displayed maps relative to the transparent overlay, and a fastening mechanism for securing the transparent overlay to a mapboard. The system may also include a mapboard, an electronic mapboard, and a computer. The system enables a user to accurately share information added to a map, possibly a digital or paper map, by recording the information onto the transparent overlay. The transparent overlay may then be transferred to a different map, possibly displayed in a different media, where the transparent overlay accurately reflects the recorded information.

  • Patent number: 8645065
Abstract: A navigation device and a traffic line display method which make a user reliably recognize the relationships between traffic lines and roads when the traffic lines are displayed so as to correspond to the roads which are positioned near one another in a concentrated manner or connected to one another are provided. When the roads currently displayed include roads which belong to a certain road type and which are positioned near one another within a predetermined distance or connected to one another and when at least one of the roads has heavy traffic, the vicinity/connection roads positioned near one another within a predetermined distance or connected to one another and the corresponding traffic lines are clearly distinguished from one another by displaying the roads and the corresponding traffic lines so as to be visually separate from one another. Accordingly, the relationships between the traffic lines and roads are reliably recognized.

Abstract: For a more efficient utilization of data that are relevant to safety and/or mobility, data are read from a plurality of data sources. The data of each data source sets of coordinates of real locations relevant for a respective aspect can be determined. Based on a respective set of coordinates for each of the real locations a respective area is then defined for each of the data sources, and a value assigned to the area is determined. Overlapping areas defined for a respective data source are aggregated so as to obtain non-overlapping areas with at least one assigned value for each of the data sources. The non-overlapping areas are superposed with the assigned values. The result is a value distribution, which reflects an overall situation with regard to the at least two aspects in a real region. An apparatus, a system, a program and a storage medium are configured accordingly.

  • Patent number: 8635023
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate generally to localizing mobile devices. In one example, a first location method associated with a first accuracy value may be used to estimate a location of the mobile device. A confidence circle indicative of a level of confidence in the estimation of the location is calculated. The confidence circle may be displayed on a mobile device. When other location methods become available, the size of the displayed confidence circle may be expanded based on information from an accelerometer of the client device or the accuracy of the other available location methods. This may be especially useful when the mobile device is transitioning between areas which are associated with different location methods that may be more or less accurate.

  • Patent number: 8626443
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for creating a map relating to location-related data on the likelihood of the future movement of a person in a spatial environment, such as a building, forest, tunnel system or public place, and in particular a shopping center, airport or train station. In the method according to the invention, at least one person is supplied with one or more sensors (e.g. inertial sensors, rotation rate sensors, optical sensors) for odometrical measurement (odometry) (e.g. attached to a shoe), wherein the odometry has errors due to inherent measurement inaccuracies of the sensor(s) (e.g. angle deviations, length deviations). The at least one person moves by foot through the spatial environment. Information regarding the pedestrian step lengths and/or pedestrian step direction and/or orientation of the sensor or the person (called odometry information Zu) is determined from the measurement signals of the sensor(s).

  • Patent number: 8620570
Abstract: A mapping application that returns results for a target location as a function of at least one nearby landmark. The one or more nearby landmarks can be selected based on an expected user familiarity with the landmark, a precision of the landmark and/or a spatial relationship of the landmark with respect to the target location. Although landmarks are an integral aspect of navigation, they have rarely been used within electronic navigation devices. Electronic navigation means for a mobile device or other devices can guide the user along a route using photographs of landmarks together with audio and text instructions that reference these landmarks. This can assist older users who often find their mobility hampered by declines in sensory, cognitive and motor abilities.
