Abstract: A system that can automatically narrow the search space or recognition scope within an activity-centric environment based upon a current activity or set of activities is provided. In addition, the activity and context data can also be used to rank the results of the recognition or search activity. In accordance with the domain scoping, natural language processing (NLP) as well as other types of conversion and recognition systems can dynamically adjust to the scope of the activity or group of activities thereby increasing the recognition systems accuracy and usefulness. In operation, a user context, activity context, environment context and/or device profile can be employed to effectuate the scoping. As well, the system can combine context with extrinsic data, including but not limited to, calendar, profile, historical activity data, etc. in order to define the parameters for an appropriate scoping.

  • Patent number: 7818278
Abstract: A two-phase process quickly and accurately identifies representations of the same items within a collection of item representations. In the first phase, referred to as a “blocking phase,” frequency information indicating the frequency with which terms appear within the collection of item representations is used to quickly identify “candidate pairs” (i.e., pairs of item representations that have a relatively high probability of matching). The blocking phase results in a reduced subset of the data for further analysis during the second phase. In the second phase, referred to as a “matching phase,” the candidate pairs are analyzed using fuzzy matching functions to accurately identify “matching pairs” (i.e., representations of the same items).

Abstract: The sentimental significance of a group of historical documents related to a topic is assessed with respect to change in an extrinsic metric for the topic. A unique sentiment binding label is included to the content of actions documents that are determined to have sentimental significance and the group of documents is inserted into a historical document sentiment vector space for the topic. Action areas in the vector space are defined from the locations of action documents and singular sentiment vector may be created that describes the cumulative action area. Newly published documents are sentiment-scored by semantically comparing them to documents in the space and/or to the singular sentiment vector. The sentiment scores for the newly published documents are supplemented by human sentiment assessment of the documents and a sentiment time decay factor is applied to the supplemented sentiment score of each newly published documents.

Abstract: An opinion system infers the opinion of a sentence of a product review based on a probability that the sentence contains certain sequences of parts of speech that are commonly used to express an opinion as indicated by the training data and the probabilities of the training data. When provided with the sentence, the opinion system identifies possible sequences of parts of speech of the sentence that are commonly used to express an opinion and the probability that the sequence is the correct sequence for the sentence. For each sequence, the opinion system then retrieves a probability derived from the training data that the sequence contains an opinion word that expresses an opinion. The opinion system then retrieves a probability from the training data that the opinion words of the sentence are used to express an opinion. Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for dynamically recommending one or more visualizations for a given task based on user behavior, such as a user's interaction pattern with a current visualization. An alternate visualization type is provided to a user by observing actions of the user with a current visualization type; determining if one or more predefined action patterns is detected in the observed actions, wherein at least one of the predefined action patterns has a predefined associated alternate visualization type; and providing the alternate visualization type to the user when the associated predefined action pattern is detected. The one or more predefined action patterns may be defined by one or more rules or an example-based method.

  • Publication number: 20100042576
Abstract: An overall semantic similarity score value between pairs of named entities in a text corpus is obtained by calculating for at least one pair of named entities a plurality of corresponding pair similarity score values according to a first and at least a second classifier using electronic information sources. Each pair similarity score value of the pair of named entities per classifier is normalized by calculating a rank list per classifier, for example, for each named entity. The rank list holds each pair of named entities of the text corpus, wherein a rank of each pair of named entities within the rank list reflects the respective pair similarity score value. Further an arithmetic mean of the normalized pair similarity score value of each pair of named entities is calculated to provide the overall semantic similarity score value.

Abstract: An inspiration model device according to the invention is provided with a spontaneous emotion unit, a knowledge database, and a conception unit. The spontaneous emotion unit prepares, as data, plural emotion states in advance, which are obtained by modeling human emotions, and causes state transitions to occur repeatedly between the emotion states according a stochastic model of the Schrödinger equation. The knowledge database simulates a human inspiration source that is influenced by sensibility by classifying externally collected knowledge data depending on the degrees of correlation with the emotion states, and accumulates the knowledge data. When receiving an external input, the conception unit simulates human conception by combining the external input with an emotion state of the spontaneous emotion unit and searching the knowledge database for related knowledge data using, as a search key, the combination or the like.

Abstract: Systems and methods for populating a database. An ontology is parsed to determine a plurality of keywords. A string-based search engine is utilized to perform a search of documents on a network based on the determined keywords, and at least one document is retrieved. A relation is established between the retrieved document and the ontology, and it is determined if the at least one document is to be stored in the database based on the established relation. If so, the document is stored in the database. The database can be used as part of a standalone or plug-in search engine for retrieving online documents.

Abstract: A semantic infrastructure (SI) system is provided to interface with an information asset management tool, such as a document management system. The SI is a semantic layer that links together structured, unstructured and tacit information. The SI determines a set of valid terms associated with remaining facets based on the term selection for a first facet and in accordance with predefined facet relationships. The present invention links the content of documents to an enterprise view and to a corporate file plan. The SI includes a database storing assets each associated with a plurality of facets. Embodiments of the present invention provide a unified approach, i.e., an approach that can provide file classification, taxonomies, metadata, thesauri and data model functionalities, to better describe and organize information assets using a single database employing a faceted classification system. A stored metadata instance is mapped to an externally supported metadata format.

  • Patent number: 7660820
Abstract: A system and method are provided that overcome the previously described limitations of prior art systems. The computer system, in fact, uses a set of information objects to interface with heterogeneous information sources. Information objects can be combined to form tasks that can be added, deleted and modified without requiring any modifications to the underlying program. In addition, the computer system allows users to navigate through a task and automatically generates links to related tasks based on the contextual information in which each step in the task is performed. As a result, links to related tasks do not have to be defined ahead of time, but rather can be dynamically generated at run time. This is accomplished by associating a semantic type or multiple semantic types with the information generated during each step. This allows the system to present links to tasks that utilize the same semantic types generated during the previous step.

  • Patent number: 7650272
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer program product are presented for automatically evaluating Bayesian network models. Operations performed comprise receiving a Bayesian Network (BN) model including evidence nodes and conclusion nodes that are linked with the evidence nodes by causal dependency links, and where the evidence nodes have evidence states and the conclusion nodes have conclusion states. The states of conclusion nodes are set to desired conclusion states and corresponding probabilities of occurrence of evidence states are determined by propagating these states down the causal dependency links. Thus, samples of most likely states of the evidence nodes are generated. Then, states of the evidence nodes are set corresponding to the samples of the evidence states. These states are propagated back up the causal dependency links to obtain probabilities of the resulting states of the conclusion nodes. Finally, a representation is outputted for the probabilities of the states of the conclusion nodes.

Abstract: A system and method for classifying text includes a pre-processor, a knowledge base, and a statistical engine. The pre-processor identifies concepts in the text and creates a structured text object that contains the concepts. The structured text object is then passed to a statistical engine, which applies statistical information provided in nodes of a knowledge base to the structured text object in order to calculate a set of match scores, each match score representing the relevance of the text to an associated one of a plurality of predefined categories. The pre-processor may be implemented in the form of an interpreter which selects and executes a script that includes language- and scenario-specific instructions for performing linguistic and semantic analysis of the text.
