Abstract: In one embodiment, a method comprises identifying, by a device, an addressable video stream selected for viewing by a user of the device; obtaining, by the device, geographic metadata for the addressable video stream in response to the device identifying the addressable video stream, the geographic metadata including a location metadata element identifying a geographic location that describes a corresponding identifiable event within the addressable video stream; retrieving, by the device, location information about the geographic location based on the corresponding location metadata element; and displaying by the device the location information to the user, for presentation to the user of the location information that provides a geographic context for the identifiable event.

Abstract: A system performs user intention modeling for interactive image retrieval. In one implementation, the system uses a three stage iterative technique to retrieve images from a database without using any image tags or text descriptors. First, the user submits a query image and the system models the user's search intention and configures a customized search to retrieve relevant images. Then, the system extends a user interface for the user to designate visual features across the retrieved images. The designated visual features refine the intention model and reconfigure the search to retrieve images that match the remodeled intention. Third, the system extends another user interface through which the user can give natural feedback about the retrieved images. The three stages can be iterated to quickly assemble a set of images that accurately fulfills the user's search intention.

Abstract: A personal resources organizer with calendar interface and object detection is provided. The personal resources organizer monitors personal resources for use with a scheduled event by identifying one or more personal resource objects present in a container and retrieving a list of required personal resource objects for an event scheduled in an electronic schedule. The identified one or more personal resource objects are compared with the list of required personal resource objects for the schedule event and a report of a readiness for the scheduled event is generated based on results of the comparison. The report may then be output for use by a user in determining the user's readiness or preparedness for the scheduled event such that the user may make modifications to the personal resource objects in the container and/or the list or required personal resource objects.

Abstract: A system and method of data processing receives a query at a server computer system. The system and method utilizes the query to extract a search result from a data source. The system and method receives at least one search activity record and a user preference from a client computer system over a network at a server computer system. The server computer system stores at least one search activity record on the server computer system and deletes the at least one search activity record on the server computer system based on the user preference.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for combining conjoint analysis with customer relationship management software, search engine software, and auction software are disclosed. According to one method, conjoint analysis is used to facilitate user interaction with a search engine. According to the method, search keywords are received as a user and treated as attributes by a conjoint analysis application. The conjoint analysis application presents the user with paired trade-off questions regarding the search keywords. Conjoint analysis is performed based on user responses to the questions. Based on the user's responses to the questions, relative importance weightings are computed for keywords. The keywords and the relative importance weightings are input to a search engine. The search is performed using the keywords. Results to be output to the user are selected based on occurrences of the keywords in the search results and the relative importance weightings.

Abstract: A system and method that enables the user to search and identify meaningful and relevant information, based upon the weighted, custom parameters provided by the user and parameters or rules defined by the community of users as a group, with the option of utilizing user profile information to tune or detune searching, comparing or contrasting, and predicting. User profile information is collected and organized with data and feedback collected from other users. The results are then tailored to a weighted, cumulative summary result, for display that benefits the contributing user and subsequent future community or user group associations (UGA). The methods provide a summary, or result, that can be tailored specifically to the user based upon weighted rules (algorithms) and parameters defined by the user (or a user group as a whole), and the weighted rules and parameters defined as meaningful by the user (group).

Abstract: A method, system, and graphical user interface for improved web searching via user-specified annotations are disclosed. One aspect of the invention involves a graphical user interface on a computer that includes a ranked set of links responsive to a search request by a user. At least some of the links are to documents that have not previously been rated by the user and at least some of the links are to documents that have previously been rated by the user. The links are displayed in an order that depends at least in part on the ratings of the documents that have previously been rated by the user.

Abstract: A method comprising receiving a search query to generate a search result of one or more media items and providing a personalized search rank of the one or more media items on the basis of a user profile and an item relevance for a given media item with regard to the query metadata associated with the search result is identified and used to identify at least one related media item. The at least one related media item is ranked on the basis of the user profile and the metadata.

Abstract: Techniques and systems are disclosed providing improved ranking of results to an online search-based query. One or more user types are identified for a search-based query, and may correspond to a number of user relevant results, and which user results are selected. A user profile can be determined for the respective user types for the search-based query, which may identify a proportion of the users that belong to that type, and how many results are relevant to that type. A set of relevant results can be identified for the respective user types for the search-based query, based on a number of results used by the user type. An improved ranking of the results can be determined for the search-based query, from the one or more sets of relevant results, based on user profiles and a desired user satisfaction metric for a desired number of users.

Abstract: A method of selecting and presenting content based on learned user preferences is provided. The method includes providing a content system including a set of content items organized by genre characterizing the content items, and wherein the set of content items contains microgenre metadata further characterizing the content items. The method also includes receiving search input from the user for identifying desired content items and, in response, presenting a subset of content items to the user. The method further includes receiving content item selection actions from the user and analyzing the microgenre metadata within the selected content items to learn the preferred microgenres of the user. The method includes, in response to receiving subsequent user search input, selecting and presenting content items in an order that portrays as relatively more relevant those content items containing microgenre metadata that more closely match the learned microgenre preferences of the user.

Abstract: A system and method for providing a search result based on a personal network are disclosed. The search result providing system may include a search term reception unit, a personal network extraction unit, and a search result providing unit which may receive a search term from a user. The personal network extraction unit may extract at least one of a personal network associated with the search term, and a personal network associated with the user. The search result providing unit may provide documents associated with the personal networks as a search result of the search term. A search result optimized for the user may be provided to the user by searching for information corresponding to the search term from communities joined by another user having similar interests to that of the user, or communities joined by the user, based on personal networks of the user.

Abstract: Methods, and systems for ambiguous code triggered information querying and serving on mobile devices. Information and advertisement providers use a code triggered information server to serve context, demographic, and behavior targeted information to users via mobile devices. Users, trigger the provision of information by scanning or observing codes or information. Disambiguation processes clarify the code scans and their identity. The disambiguated scans, geographic, temporal, and user-specific information, are obtained by the server that processes, and records the messages. These messages and a user profile—which may include updated user-specific behavior information, situational and ambient information, accumulated history of scanned code messages, and integration with outside database information—the server selects information to serve to the users' mobile devices from an information base.

Abstract: Methods, devices, and products are provided for targeting media. Descriptive information is received that describes media. The descriptive information is compared to a stored set of user-defined criteria. If the descriptive information contains any criterion, the media is stored in memory, and the stored media is targeted to a user's communications device.

In some embodiments, one or more access rules or criteria may be implemented that enable users to access portions of the source content up to an allowed limit or threshold (e.g., number or percentage of pages), after which access is prevented to the remaining content that has not previously been accessed. In other embodiments, one or more access rules or criteria may be implemented that enable users to access portions of content of only a certain type (e.g., index, bibliography, introduction, certain chapters, etc.). Abstract: A method for authenticating a user, that includes receiving an account identifier from the user, obtaining a media prompt from an account based on the account identifier, presenting the user with the media prompt and a question prompt, wherein the question prompt references the media prompt, receiving input answering the question prompt, comparing the input with a valid response to determine whether the user is authentic, wherein the valid response requires personal knowledge of the media prompt and the question prompt, and authorizing the user to access a resource when the user is authentic.

One method includes storing data identifying a plurality of positive and a plurality of negative training images for a query. Abstract: A system provides a user interface through which users can flexibly tag individual items represented in an electronic catalog with user-defined tags, such as text strings, and obtain recommendations that are specific to particular tags. The tags and tag-item assignments created by each user are stored persistently in association with the user, and may be kept private to the user or exposed to others. Once a user has assigned a tag to a number of items, the user (or another user in some embodiments) can request and obtain recommendations that are specific to this tag. These recommendations may be generated in real time by a recommendation service that identifies items that are collectively similar or related to the items associated with the tag.

Abstract: A universal distributed search system allows users to find and distribute search results (possibly including advertisements) to those with whom they communicate. The search results can be easily distributed by the user via a simple interface that allows the search results to be easily added to the user's content. In one implementation, the search results may be automatically generated by the system based on user input to a content creation application.

Abstract: A cluster recovery process is implemented across a set of distributed archives, where each individual archive is a storage cluster of preferably symmetric nodes. Each node of a cluster typically executes an instance of an application that provides object-based storage of fixed content data and associated metadata. According to the storage method, an association or “link” between a first cluster and a second cluster is first established to facilitate replication. The first cluster is sometimes referred to as a “primary” whereas the “second” cluster is sometimes referred to as a “replica.” Once the link is made, the first cluster's fixed content data and metadata are then replicated from the first cluster to the second cluster, preferably in a continuous manner. Upon a failure of the first cluster, however, a failover operation occurs, and clients of the first cluster are redirected to the second cluster.

A set of relevant results can be identified for the respective user types for the query, based on a number of results used by the user type. The method according to one embodiment comprises selecting an item from the result set, selecting a user profile from one or more user profiles and selecting one or more items of personalized information from the selected user profile. A rank is calculated for the item on the basis of the selected one or more items of personalized information and the selected item in the result set is ranked in accordance with the calculated rank.

Abstract: A system and methods are provided for automatically classifying data according to perceptual properties of the data to form a classification chain that is suited to the searching and sorting of large databases of media entities. During classification, experts assign each media entity in the training data set to one or more classes, with each class corresponding to a given subset of perceptual properties of the data. In conjunction with digital signal processing properties of the data corresponding to the perceptual properties, the classified data is then used to construct an initial classification chain. During operation, when presented with an unclassified entry, the classification chain returns an estimate of the class of the entry, as well as a confidence measure that is proportional to the level of confidence of the class assignment. Over time, as the classification chain evolves, the classification chain becomes more and more effective for quickly characterizing media entities.

Abstract: A method and system for single-action personalized recommendation and display of content via the Internet. The recommendation is given by a server system and received by a client system. The content itself has been previously recommended to the server system by the users of the client system. Client system recommendations to the server system are also invoked with a single-action. Recommended content is referred to by a URL. Users can rate content to the server system using a single-action. The server system performs recommendation calculations using user-specific information such as user preferences, demographic data, content rating history, and content-specific information. The content rating history of other users may also influence these calculations. Client systems display recommended content directly to the user in response to only a single-action.

Abstract: A method for the analysis, benchmarking, and finally improvement of communications pertaining to the field of public relations is described. The methodology is based on a massively quantitative approach suitable for numerical processing. Furthermore, it takes into account data outside the realm of communications and the press, such as a company's commercial and financial market performance to normalise the quantitative results and facilitate comparisons between competitors. Taking into account proprietary data such as the communication budget of a client the performance of the communications effort can be benchmarked objectively. Finally, the method offers the resulting key performance indicators to a wide audience within the client company in a “cock-pit” style manner.

Base scores for a plurality of content items are determined based on attributes of the content items. A subset of the plurality of content items having the highest adjusted scores are selected, and the selected subset of content items are output.

A set of related members for the member is identified. The related members are members of the same website. Age information associated with one or more related members in the set of related members is examined. When a threshold of related members in the set of related members are of an estimated actual age within a certain age range, the member's actual age is estimated to be within the age range.

Abstract: A system and method allows for dynamic, parameterized linking of database views or tables. The database tables are related in a parent-dependent relationship, with dependent tables being linked to parent tables through a parameter. When a new record in the parent table is scrolled to, dependent tables automatically run queries and return records with matching parameters. The parameters include field values. Several table views may be combined in a single database table set. Multiple dependent tables may be linked to an individual parent table in a parallel manner. Dependent tables may also be cascaded through intermediate parent tables, each table in the cascade acting as a dependent to its parent and acting as a parent table to its dependent table(s). Database table sets may be saved and may be transmitted, for example via email.

Abstract: A method of extending user profile. A user specific data related to an application is received and stored for integration with a user profile. A template for the application is received and stored. The template tailors the user specific data based on aesthetic preferences of the user to generate a tailored user specific data. The user profile is extended based on the user specific data for the application and the template for the application. The user profile including the tailored user specific data may be provided for rendering. Local information, e.g., geographical location, of the user may be determined to tailor the user profile based on the local information. The user specific data and/or the template may be in a markup language format. Update to the user specific data and/or template may be pushed when available.
