Abstract: A model based on a generalization of the Examination Hypothesis is disclosed that states that for a given query, the user click probability on a document in a given position is proportional to the relevance of the document and a query specific position bias. Based on this model the relevance and position bias parameters are learned for different queries and documents. This is done by translating the model into a system of linear equations that can be solved to obtain the best fit relevance and position bias values. A cumulative analysis of the position bias curves may be performed for different queries to understand the nature of these curves for navigational and informational queries. In particular, the position bias parameter values may be computed for a large number of queries. Such an exercise reveals whether the query is informational or navigational.

Abstract: A method and system for discovering a control event from electronically published documents is provided, in which a control program on a computer identifies electronically published documents stored in a plurality of network servers which potentially contain control events relevant to the control of goods and/or services, the control events being identified by reference to a user interest database containing user interest identifiers. Identified documents are analyzed by a classification program to determine whether control events are present, referring to a control event database. A control event classification is assigned to documents determined to contain at least one discovered control event, the assigned control event classification and information identifying the associated document is stored in a classification database, and a report of discovery of documents containing control events is be provided to a user.

Compared with the prior arts, the present invention can largely improve the readability of the relevant generated information organization structure.

A statistical model of activity patterns is generated for each user and user activity source based on various parameters. Various measures are generated that are adaptive by being updated at a rate determined sufficient to detect user activity pattern changes. The method is described in the context of a shared search engine platform in which multiple vertical domain repositories reside. Choosing search hints in the face of such diversity of content can be a challenge.
