  • Patent number: 9146944
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for supporting transaction recovery based on a strict ordering of two-phase commit calls. At least one resource manager in a mid-tier transactional environment can be designated as the “determiner resource,” in order to support eliminating mid-tier transaction logs (TLOG) in processing a two-phase transaction. A transaction manager can prepare all other resource managers in the mid-tier transactional system before the determiner resource. Furthermore, the transaction manager can rely on the list of outstanding transactions to be committed that is provided by the determiner resource for recovering the transaction. The transaction manager can commit an in-doubt transaction returned from a resource manager that matches the list of in-doubt transactions returned from the determiner resource. Otherwise, the transaction manager can roll back the in-doubt transaction.

  • Patent number: 9141492
Abstract: A storage object is migrated between nodes by a source node automatically verifying that another node is configured to service the storage object and changing ownership of the storage object based on the verifying. A cluster manager for the clustered storage system receives a request and provides the request to the source which owns the storage object. The source verifies that the destination is configured according to a predetermined configuration for servicing the storage object. Based on the verifying, the source offlines the storage object and updates ownership information of the storage object, thereafter allowing the destination to online the storage object. The cluster manager further provides the updated ownership information to all the nodes in the cluster, so an access request intended for the storage object may be received by any node and forwarded to the destination using the updated ownership information to effect a transparent migration.

  • Patent number: 9069827
Abstract: A system that implements a data storage service may store data on behalf of storage service clients. The system may maintain data in multiple replicas of partitions that are stored on respective computing nodes in the system. A master replica for a replica group may increment a membership version indicator for the group, and may propagate metadata (including the membership version indicator) indicating a membership change for the group to other members of the group. Propagating the metadata may include sending a log record containing the metadata to the other replicas to be appended to their respective logs. Once the membership change becomes durable, it may be committed. A replica attempting to become the master of a replica group may determine that another replica in the group has observed a more recent membership version, in which case logs may be synchronized or snipped, or the attempt may be abandoned.

  • Patent number: 8468387
Abstract: Provided herein are systems and methodologies for bare metal machine restoration of a client computing environment over a network-based backup system. System recovery can be performed by performing a network boot from a predetermined server or set of servers on the Internet and/or an associated local network, followed by retrieving information relating to an operating system and/or environment of a system being recovered, such as incremental or full operating system images. Upon retrieval of information, the information can be used to conduct a full restore of the operating environment of the computing device. Additionally, a user can restore personal or other system data following rebuilding of the system operating environment. A cloud-based structure is provided herein as well as a hybrid peer-to-peer/cloud-based structure, wherein information used in a restore can be obtained from a global network location (e.g., cloud server(s)) and/or from one or more local peers.

Abstract: Various embodiments for automated error recovery in a computing storage environment by a processor device are provided. In one embodiment, pursuant to performing one of creating a new and rebuilding an existing logical partition (LPAR) operable in the computing storage environment by a hardware management console (HMC) in communication with the LPAR, at least one failure scenario is evaluated by identifying error code. If a failure is caused by an operation of the HMC and a malfunction of a current network connection, a cleanup operation is performed on at least a portion of a current HMC configuration, an alternative network connection to the current network connection is made, and a retry operation is performed.

  • Patent number: 8448015
Abstract: The system enables a call center to manage requests from remote computing clients for service. The system provides a number of software tools that allow technicians to perform routine maintenance and correct problems remotely. At the front-end, the system enables requests to be submitted by customers via various mediums, accesses a calendar to determine technician availability, determines the urgency of the request, and schedules an appropriate technician to address the reported problem. The system further includes tools that enable a technician to access a remote computing client to perform a number computer maintenance and diagnostics. Other tools enable the technician to correct problems that are detected through diagnostics. Calls to the call center are recorded and maintained in order to track pending issues and identify potential areas of improvement.

  • Patent number: 8438418
Abstract: An aspect of the present invention simplifies software maintenance of nodes in a data center. In one embodiment, a management system receives data specifying a set of commands to be executed on a node in the data center, and then forms a maintenance script by programmatically incorporating instructions for executing the set of commands on the node and to perform a set of management actions. The management system then executes the maintenance script to cause execution of the set of commands on the nodes, thereby performing maintenance of the node. A user/administrator of the data center needs to specify only the commands, thereby simplifying the software maintenance of data centers. According to another aspect, the maintenance scripts (formed by incorporating the commands provided by a user) are executed as part of a disaster recovery process in the data center.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer program product for realizing application high availability are provided. The application is installed on both a first node and a second node, the first node being used as an active node, and the second node being used as a passive node. The method includes: monitoring access operations to files by an application during its execution on the active node; replicating the monitored updates to the file by the application from the active node to a storage device accessible to the passive node if the application performs updates to a file during the access operations; sniffing the execution of the application on the active node; and switching the active node to the second node and initiating the application on the second node in response to sniffing a failure in the execution of the application on the active node.

  • Patent number: 8429444
Abstract: A multipurpose storage system based upon a distributed hashing mechanism with transactional support and failover capability is disclosed. According to one embodiment, a system comprises a client system in communication with a network, a secondary storage system in communication with the network, and a supervisor system in communication with the network. The supervisor system assigns a unique identifier to a first node system and places the first node system in communication with the network in a location computed by using hashing. The client system stores a data object on the first node system.

  • Patent number: 8325885
Abstract: A method of initiating outbound calls through a telephony interface. The method accepts an inbound call from a user, authenticates the inbound call against a predetermined user identity, accesses an address book associated with the user identity, receives an spoken request from the user, selects a telephone record in the address book associated with the spoken request, initiates an outbound call to the telephone record; and connects the inbound call with the outbound call responsive to a connection established on the outbound call. In an alternative embodiment the method accepts an inbound call, authenticates the inbound call against a predetermined user identity, receives a dual-tone frequency-modulated input representing a desired outbound call target, initiates an outbound call to the outbound call target, and connects the inbound call with the outbound call responsive to a connection established on the outbound call.
