The invention provides means for “framing” Internet content, as well as creating links on the fly, to a single web-page that can be accessed by a single user, or by a set of users in a cooperative relationship with each other.

Abstract: A system and method of embedding symbology in alphabetic letters and then linking the letter to a site or sites on the global computer network, i.e., the Internet, are provided. The system and method provide for capturing an image of at least one character fixed in a medium; determining at least one letter of an alphabet corresponding to the at least one character; determining a numerical value for the determined at least one letter; looking up in a database a hyperlink corresponding to the numerical value; and presenting the hyperlink on a display device. The system and method further provide determining at least one marking within the at least one letter; and determining a location for the at least one marking within the at least one letter, wherein the combination of the at least one marking and the location for the at least one marking corresponds to the numerical value.

Abstract: A method, system and program storage device for browsing hyperlinked documents are provided. A method in one aspect may include enabling navigating from a document having a plurality of hyperlinks to a document associated with one of said plurality of hyperlinks; and enabling navigating directly from said document associated with one of said plurality of hyperlinks to another document associated with another one of said plurality of hyperlinks using one or more of a plurality of defined elements. System and program storage device for performing the above methods are also provided.

Abstract: Systems and methods associated with indexing of information in documents where the documents include line data with shift out/shift in (“SOSI”) code point encodings. SOSI controls are often embedded in documents encoded as simple line data (data formed to be printed on line printers). A document indexing system in accordance with features and aspects hereof converts the SOSI characters embedded in such a document to reserved codes for presentation on a user interface. The user may then precisely select trigger and field parameters used for identifying index values in such a line data document for purposes of indexing and archiving. The reserved controls help a user identify trigger and field value in a manner that the indexing system can track to determine whether and where the selected trigger and field values contain SOSI characters and thus require different column counting and indexing.

Abstract: A system modifies documents to aid users in determining which of the entries in the documents to choose. The system identifies a document that includes one or more entries. The system determines a score for each of the entries and modifies the identified document, or entries in the identified document, based on the determined scores. The system then provides the modified document to a user.

Abstract: A link-tracking server receives a request for a Web page or an image and stores link-tracking information in one or more link-tracking files to create a record of link-tracking information. The link tracking files may later be accessed by a link-tracking subscriber, such as by logging onto the link-tracking server. A content provider embeds link-tracking code in each Web page where link-tracking information is desired to be captured. Such Web pages embedded with such link-tracking code are then stored in a content provider server, which then serves such tracking-enabled Web pages to users on the network. When a user requests a tracking-enabled page, the link-tracking code sends one or more requests to a link-tracking server to record link-tracking information.

Abstract: A document creation method according to this invention includes an image capturing step of capturing image data of each page, a boundary image specifying step of specifying a boundary image serving as the boundary between sets of pages from image data captured in the image capturing step, and a document creation step of creating, on the basis of the image data captured in the image capturing step, an electronic document divided into different chapters at the position of the boundary image specified in the boundary image specifying step. The electronic document created in the document creation step is divided into a plurality of chapters, and boundary pages are set between the plurality of chapters.

Abstract: A method for presenting a page, having a set of links, on a data processing system is provided. The page is preprocessed to form a processed page, wherein the processed page is unpresented within the data processing system. A determination is made as to whether or not the links within the page fall within a proximity policy. Responsive to a determination that the page falls outside of the proximity policy, the page is reformatted to fall within the proximity policy. The mechanism of the present invention includes a preprocessing process and a policy structure for reformatting an electronic document page. The policy structure of the present invention allows the user to specify the appearance of the electronic document page. The policy structure as defined by the user is stored such that when the user returns to the page, the page may be displayed according to the policy structure defined by the user.

Abstract: A composition model, which specifies a set of all possible facets that may be used to render a composition template, is used to bind unresolved elements in the composition template with a set of document components in a container. Different instances of a rendered document are produced by altering the set of document components in the container and using the composition model to re-bind the unresolved elements in the composition template with the document components in the altered set of document components in the container.

Abstract: A link structure and method for linking therein. The link structure includes a first page of a website and may include a global page of the website. The first page includes a link that has a default pointer and may have a local pointer, a global pointer, or both. The local pointer points to a local page and the global pointer points to the global page. A local link structure includes the local pointer but not the global pointer. A global link structure includes the global pointer but not the local pointer. A hybrid link structure includes the local pointer and the global pointer. Linking within the link structure may include linking from the link to the local page through the local pointer or linking from the link to the global page through the global pointer.

Abstract: It is so arranged that a cookie can be utilized even by a client terminal that does not support cookie information. An index.html file to which cookie information has been appended is transmitted from a web server to a proxy server. A link destination URL contained in a web page represented by the index.html file is changed by the proxy server and the cookie information is stored in the proxy server. The web page in which the changed URL has been embedded is displayed on the client terminal. If the proxy server is requested for the web page of the changed URL, the proxy server restores the URL to the URL that prevailed before the change and also reads the cookie information. The proxy server then requests the web server for both the web page of the URL that prevailed before the change and the cookie information. Thus the web server can utilize the cookie information even though the client terminal cannot.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems and methods for linking items into common matters. Some embodiments of the systems and/or methods may retrieve an electronic document from a source, determine whether the electronic document is associated with a predetermined first matter, and in response to determining that the electronic document is associated with the predetermined first matter, link the electronic document to the predetermined first matter. Similarly, in some embodiments, the systems and methods may further create a second matter and may link the electronic document to the second matter, such that accessing the electronic document can provide other documents linked to the second matter, receive a request for the electronic document, and in response to receiving the request for the electronic document, provide a user option to provide access to the other documents linked to the predetermined first matter.

Abstract: A system and method for displaying a message in a user interface of a communication device is provided. Names, such as proper nouns, are identified within the message body and associated with a contact address. The contact address may be taken from an address book or other data store at the device, but may also be retrieved from another portion of the message in which the proper noun is identified. Contact addresses may be determined to be associated with an identified name due to proximity of the contact address to the name within the message body, or due to proximity of the contact address to another name within the message body, whether the other name matches the identified name. The associated contact address information may be embedded in the message and the message thus revised may be stored and forwarded to another recipient.

Abstract: A self-updating frameset having a target document in one frame and a Table-of-Contents (TOC) document in another frame hyperlinked to the target document. A reference document (RD) field is inserted into the TOC document to identify the target document as the target of the TOC. A TOC field in the TOC document scans the target document to identify selected headings as entries in the TOC document. When the selected headings are identified, the TOC field creates hyperlink entries in the TOC document, each hyperlink entry having a corresponding anchor at a selected heading in the target document. The hyperlink entries in the TOC document can be automatically updated each time the fields in the TOC document are recalculated.

Abstract: A system and method for adding features to an electronic file is provided. The electronic file can be automatically examined to identify information that relates to features such as navigational aids or enhanced content. Certain information is defined to represent the navigational aids or enhanced content. When the information representing the navigational aid or enhanced content is located in the electronic file, the navigational aid or enhanced content is added to the electronic file. Bookmarks, internal links, web links, attachments, digital signatures and multimedia files are some examples of navigational aids and enhanced content that may be added to the electronic file, although other items may also be included.

Abstract: According to the present invention, a method for accessing a parent page while browsing web pages is provided, which comprises steps of: receiving by a server a request from a user to extract a web page; when extracting the web page, updating by the server an “UP” list according to a parent-children-relation markup pre-stored in a page link to the web page, and entering into the web page linked by the page link; when requesting by the user the parent page, obtaining by the server the current “UP” list for the user to extract the parent page.

Abstract: A site redirection system and corresponding methods for redirecting a user from a requested site to a target site is provided. When a user navigates to a site on which the redirection system is implemented, the site downloads onto the user's machine client-side redirection logic. The client-side redirection logic collects the machine's configuration information and passes the collected configuration information to the site. On the site, server-side redirection logic uses the received configuration information to determine a target URL based on the configuration information passed by the client-side redirection logic. The server-side redirection logic then passes the target URL to the client-side redirection logic where the final redirection occurs.

Abstract: Described are a variety of techniques for viewing multimedia-based information in accordance with user controls for the speed and direction of the multimedia presentation. Different techniques for presenting multimedia data items are disclosed. User controls providing control for speed and direction in accordance with a user selection device being in a particular location. When a user device is within the defined area, the speed and direction control are on. When the user selection device leaves the defined area, the speed and direction are off. Also described is a system using a browser tool for displaying multimedia data in accordance with these viewing techniques. Multimedia data items displayed with the viewing techniques are indices into multimedia presentations. A user selection is made by viewing the multimedia data items and control is transferred accordingly to an appropriate application to present a multimedia presentation corresponding to a selected multimedia data item.

Abstract: The rendering of markup language based files is accelerated by employing an apparatus to capture requests for markup language pages. The requested pages are retrieved and then examined to identify additional links that are contained therein. The markup language page is then modified by adding a trigger or tag into the page. The trigger or tag is basically a mechanism to automate a request for additional markup language information or pages. The trigger or tag, when received by the device requesting the markup language page, will invoke a request to obtain the markup language information or file represented by the tag. The tag can be a browser activated link or a JavaScript. A predictive module is used to review the additional links in the requested pages to identify a predicted next page to be downloaded or requested. This predicted next page or link can be a most likely candidate for what a user viewing the current page would request.

Abstract: A computer implemented method of processing an image for display on a mobile communication device includes extracting a portion of an image based on an image map. The image map relates to the portion of the image. The method also includes generating a document that comprises the extracted portion of the image and transmitting the generated document to a remote device for display. The method may also include assigning a selectable link to the extracted portion of the image and receiving a request from the remote device for an initial document having the image and image map. Additionally, the method may include storing in a database the generated document and transmitting the stored generated document in response to future requests for the initial document.

Abstract: Editable bookmarks shared via a social network are described. In embodiments, a bookmark is received from a client device at a media content service. The bookmark corresponds to a media asset and includes an identifier of the media asset. Metadata associated with the media asset is added to the bookmark to generate an editable bookmark. A bookmark invitation is also received from the client device, and the bookmark invitation is directed to social network contacts of a user of the client device. The editable bookmark can then be communicated to receiving client devices of the respective social network contacts identified by the bookmark invitation, and a receiving client device can initiate playback of the media asset that corresponds to the editable bookmark. Further, the editable bookmark can be updated when additional data associated with the media asset is received from a social network contact via a respective client device.

Abstract: To provide a shortened version of a link that conveys useful information about the link's associated content, embodiments of the invention generate a shortened version of the link that comprises meaningful information about the original link. For example, in some embodiments such information includes portions of the link itself, such as domain and/or path components of the link's address text, content to which the link points, such as the text of a web page or other document referenced by the link's address text, or a rating of the content to which the link points. Thus, rather than generating an essentially random link, embodiments of the invention adaptively generate the shortened link to take into account the information about the link. Consequently, a user viewing the adaptively-generated shortened link can determine useful information about the content to which the shortened link leads based on the text of the shortened link itself.

Abstract: A template-based technique for making a best practices framework actionable includes creating a formal representation of a best practices framework, where the representation includes a machine-readable template. A portion of the template is interpreted to link the portion of the template with logic that corresponds to an action. Abstract: A large web page is analyzed and partitioned into smaller sub-pages so that a user can navigate the web page on a small form factor device. The user can browse the sub-pages to find and read information in the content of the large web page. The partitioning can be performed at a web server, an edge server, at the small form factor device, or can be distributed across one or more such devices. The analysis leverages design habits of a web page author to extract a representation structure of an authored web page. The extracted representation structure includes high level structure using several markup language tag selection rules and low level structure using visual boundary detection in which visual units of the low level structure are provided by clustering markup language tags. User viewing habits can be learned to display favorite parts of a web page.

Abstract: Disclosed is a discrete voice-activated navigation software enabling users to navigate through web-pages displayed in an internet browser by simply uttering a discrete character assigned to a hyperlink by an algorithm. This algorithm scans a webpage locating text hyperlinks and identifying any unique letter(s) within the hyperlink, i.e. all characters are matched against a database of already used tags in order to find a unique character. If available, it is assigned. If no single character is available, then a continuous set of double and if needed triple lettered tags are assigned. Illustrative hyperlinks can be activated by the selection of tags on sideline grids providing a non-intrusive alternative to clicking. Logically, differences in emphasis, pronunciation, tone, amplitude and pitch are far too great to invoke the correct response if a whole word is said. Thus discrete characters would provide least audible differences resulting in minimal errors or processing difficulty.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for receiving document images including portions linked to one or more electronic addresses. The linked portion of the document is identified using a predetermined visual attribute, such as bold-face text, or delimiters to mark the portion. The document image is then transmitted using, e.g., existing apparatus for transmitting images, such as a facsimile machine. An electronic address associated with the identified portion of the document is also transmitted using existing techniques, such as by touch-tone telephone. The address may be a voice telephone number, facsimile telephone number, World Wide Web address, or any other address with which communication can be established. At the receiving end, both the document image and electronic address are received. Pattern matching is performed on the document image to identify the portion with the predetermined attribute as a linked portion. The received electronic address is then correlated with the linked portion.

Abstract: The present invention relates to systems and methods for compiling communication material across a range of formats. A first aspect of the present invention relates to a method of editing an image for printing. The image data for a high resolution image is stored and the image is displayed at a lower resolution. The user can then edit the displayed image and image modifier data is generated based on the editing performed by the user. The image modifier data is subsequently applied to the stored high resolution image data and a modified version of the image is output based on said modified high resolution image data. The present invention also relates to a system and method for monitoring an electronic file. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a system and method of sharing data across a range of different templates for online and print material. The invention also relates to a system and method of generating online and print material in a common file format.

Abstract: Implementations of accessible content reputation lookup are described. In one implementation, before a user activates a link in a document, such as a hyperlink on a webpage, the user can designate the link. For example, the user can float a cursor over the link or interact with an icon placed proximate to the link. By designating the link, the user can request reputation information associated with the link, including information as to whether or not content associated with the link, an application used to access the content, and/or source(s) on which the content resides, are known to be dangerous or risky. If the reputation information indicates that the link is safe to activate, the user can activate the link and access the content. Alternately, if the reputation information indicates that the link is unsafe to access, the user can choose to forego activation of the link.

When a respective linked document is received from a respective data source, it is determined whether the respective linked document includes chunks that match at least one of the search terms. If true, at least a subset of the chunks are displayed as a respective group in a second window only if a number of groups displayed in the second window is less than a predefined number of groups.

The search results associated with the query may be provided. A user selection may be received, where the user selection selects at least a portion of the search results. A hypertext link or content from the search results may be added to a document or message generated (or being generated by) via the template, wherein the hypertext link or content from the search results is added to the document or message in response to the user selection.
