Abstract: A focused random walk system produces samples of on-topic pages from a collection of hyper-linked pages such as Web pages. The focused random walk system utilizes a focused random walk to produce a focused sample, which is a random sample of Web pages focused on a topic. The focused random walk system uniformly samples pages iteratively, where each iteration follows a random link from a union of the in-links and out-links of a page. The system then classifies this randomly selected link to determine whether the page is on-topic. The random walk sampling process could comprise a hard-focus method that selects only on-topic pages at each step of the focused random walk, or a soft-focus method that allows limited divergence to off-topic pages.

Abstract: A computer system provides content to a client device such as a handheld wireless telephone by identifying the client device as a limited-display client device, receiving a request from the client device for hypertext content (e.g. content in HTML form), and generating a reduced-size version of the requested hypertext content. Based on the identification of the client device as a limited-display client device and in response to the request, the reduced-size version of the hypertext content is returned to the client device. The reduced-size version of the hypertext content may be generated by removing information from the hypertext content which is not relevant to the display of the client device, and the reduced-size version of the hypertext content may include page in a text-based hypertext markup language such as HTML.

Abstract: A system and method for evaluating the integrity of a set of electronically stored files that contain hypertext links or other types of file references. The set of files may be received in compressed or uncompressed form. An integrity evaluator evaluates each file in the set of files for one or more integrity conditions or violations. The integrity evaluator may determine whether any of the files include no references to other files, or are not referenced by any other files. The integrity evaluator may also test for broken references, references employing absolute path names, invalid symbols within references, and other conditions. A report module issues a report regarding the integrity of the files and their references.

Abstract: A system and method of embedding symbology in alphabetic letters and then linking the letter to a site or sites on the global computer network, i.e., the Internet, are provided. The system and method provide for capturing an image of at least one character fixed in a medium; determining at least one letter of an alphabet corresponding to the at least one character; determining a numerical value for the determined at least one letter; looking up in a database a hyperlink corresponding to the numerical value; and presenting the hyperlink on a display device. The system and method further provide determining at least one marking within the at least one letter; and determining a location for the at least one marking within the at least one letter, wherein the combination of the at least one marking and the location for the at least one marking corresponds to the numerical value.

Abstract: A system, apparatus and method are provided that enable the receipt of answers to questions from users and to make those answers persistent within a generalized database schema. A set of one or more middleware entities and components are provided to process the user's answers that are submitted to the system. The middleware entities differentiate one user from another user by use of a session. Different sets of questions are grouped into encounters, and the answers to the questions for a particular encounter are given a unique identifier. The unique identifier can be used to identify the user and/or the particular encounter. The answers to the questions can be retrieved and viewed in numerous ways, such as by user, by encounter, by question, by question type, by answer, by answer type, etc. The selection of database schema and the structure of the middleware enables the system to handle any answer to any question without requiring the restructuring of the database or database schema.

Abstract: A computer-readable medium having a link tree creation program stored thereon and readable by a computer, the link tree creation program, when executed by the computer, causes the computer to create a link tree in relation to links pertaining to Web pages receivable via a network. The link tree creation program causes a computer to function as a link search unit that searches a link from a file of a specified Web page, a link list preparation unit that adds the searched link to a list of a link tree, which root indicating a link to the specified Web page, a tree addition determination unit that compares the searched link with the root of the link tree and determines whether creating an additional link tree rooted from the searched link, and a tree creation unit that creates an additional link tree from a determination of the tree addition determination unit.

Abstract: A method and system for facilitating information exchange between individuals and entities interacting on a shared project are provided, and more particularly to a method and system for horizontal. i.e., non-hierarchical, participation in and/or contribution to a spreadsheet-based project. The method and system is Web-based and utilizes conventional browser and spreadsheet technology to achieve collaborative exchanges of information on an enterprise-wide basis. The method and system also facilitate efficacious remote information access and exchange, e.g., over a computer network such as the Internet and/or the World Wide Web, through a caching function that combines individual queries initiated by a spreadsheet program before transmitting across a network to a server for consideration.

Abstract: Methods are described for solving the problems associated with error messages by providing methods for unique identification of error messages to allow for resolving one or several messages to information, such as a knowledge base article. The methods include a method for reporting errors by generating an error message box upon determination that an error occurred, displaying the error message box to a user and allowing a user to interact with the error message box by selecting a universal resource locator (URL) in the error message box to connect to product support. The user can cause passing of a string to product support including an error message identifier to enable a search to match the error message identifier to information concerning the error. The information could be information about the error or a bug submission form for assisting product support to isolate a new error in the application.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus, including computer program products, implementing techniques for searching and ranking linked information sources. The techniques include receiving multiple content items from a corpus of content items; receiving digital signatures each made by one of multiple agents, each digital signature associating one of the agents with one or more of the content items; and assigning a score to a first agent of the multiple agents, wherein the score is based upon the content items associated with the first agent by the digital signatures.

Abstract: An electronic document is received that represents serial data that contains content of the document and defines an order in which respective portions of the content are to be performed. The serial data of the electronic document is analyzed. Reorganization information is generated for use in delivering the portions of the content, the reorganization information enabling performance in an order different from the order defined by the serial data.

Abstract: Users are shown how a web page has been modified from a previous version. Information related to differences between the current version of the web page and a previous version of the web page is provided in response to user-initiated activity within a predefined region of the current version of the web page. In some embodiments, when a user attempts to activate a feature of the web page at a location associated with a former location of the feature in a previous version of the page, the feature is activated, but update information related to the differences between the previous and current versions of the web page is displayed over at least a portion of the information generated by activation of the feature. In some embodiments, the user is required to perform a specific action in order to clear the display of the update information.

Abstract: The described subject matter provides a convenient way to organize and automate a presentation printing process by defining a presentation print job profile. To accomplish this, a user adds a plurality of files to a presentation profile. The user specifies packaging and printing characteristics with respect to individual ones of the files. Responsive to a single print request, each of the files in the presentation profile is printed based on the specified packaging and printing characteristics.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method of controlling content includes receiving an input from the user and monitoring content in an application program or content exchanged between the application program and an operating system residing at the user's computer system. The method includes determining whether monitored content corresponds to a predetermined advertisement. If the monitored content corresponds to the predetermined advertisement, the predetermined advertisement is replaced with another predetermined advertisement based on the user input.

Abstract: A system and method for automatically extracting relevant key concepts from a free-text document and indexing the document using the extracted key concepts. The indexing mechanism applies syntactic and semantic filters to filter out irrelevant terms. The remaining terms are deemed to be key concepts for the free-text document. An input search query is compared against the key concepts extracted for the free-text document for determining whether the document satisfies the query. Prior to applying the search query, additional scenario-specific terms are added to the search query in order to improve retrieval performance. The query expansion mechanism generates a list of candidate expansion concepts, filters the list of candidate expansion concepts based on a user-entered scenario concept, and expands the input query based on the candidate expansion concepts remaining after the filtering process.

Abstract: The method and system of merges user-supplied electronic content with relevant ads based upon relevancy factors discerned form the ads and the content. Further, profiles and session histories of user-visitors are monitored and ad relevancy factors discerned form the profiles and session histories are employed to obtain user-relevant ads. The content relevant ads and user relevant ads are inserted into a preformed web page in addition to the user-supplied content. A revenue splitting module shares the ad referral or sales revenue from the click throughs to advertiser designated web sites. The relevancy factors relate to one or more of the supplied content, the user who uploaded the content, the user profile (previously input by the user), current session history, past session history, the user-group profiles and any user referral source. A comparator matches relevancy factors and ads. Ad selection by category, hierarchical or orthogonal match and high pay referral fees.

Abstract: A system for creating tagged financial documents which are computer readable. The system extracts compliance information and inserts tags related to particular financial data. The tags may be computer readable so the tagged information may be easily found and manipulated.

Abstract: A system and method for creating a customized portal environment website that retrieves content from external websites and presents this content with a consistent and controlled look and feel. Three features of this invention that enable the consistent look and feel are clipping, scrubbing and link behavior tools. The clipping tool identifies the structure of clipped pages. The structure of the clipped content is stored in a database in the system. As the system dynamically retrieves clipped pages from the target site, the system compares the structure of the retrieved clip to the anticipated, stored structure of the clip. If the two structures match, the clipped page is rendered in the look and feel of the custom website. If the structures do not match, the dynamically clipped page is displayed in a new separate window. The scrubbing feature of the present invention allows the designer of the website to define a global structure for all pages that are retrieved from a particular domain.

Abstract: According to an aspect of the present invention, information indicating the list of referrer documents referring to a referred document, is maintained. Thus, when the document identifier (name and directory location of the document) changes, the list of referrer documents that need to be changed can be easily identified. In an embodiment, the administrators of the referrer document are notified (e.g., by an automatic email) of the change of the document identifier of the referred document. According to another aspect of the present invention, a first mapping of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of each web accessible page/document to a virtual link is maintained in a web server. The content server maintains a second mapping of the virtual link to the document identifier. Thus, when the document identifier changes, only the second map in the content server needs to be updated for continued access of the content.

Abstract: Described herein, among other things, are implementations for a reference-based link module. The reference-based link module is configured to input a Web document having one or more links and convert the links to a reference-based link in a modified Web document. Mappings from the links to the corresponding reference-based links are stored and then accessed when the web document is requested.

Links are automatically created within a first document to other documents, or to locations within the first document and then modified as necessary depending on a destination location to which the first document is moved.

Abstract: A system and method facilitating page indexing employing reference information (e.g., anchor text) is provided. In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, a page index system having a page data store and a crawler component is provided. The page data store stores reference information associated with pages. The crawler component receives a page, retrieves reference information associated with the page from the page data store, and, provides the page and associated reference information, for example, to an index building system. The system can thus facilitate indexing of pages based, at least in part, upon reference information (e.g., anchor text) associated with the pages.

Abstract: A link-tracking server receives a request for a Web page or an image and stores link-tracking information in one or more link-tracking files to create a record of link-tracking information. The link tracking files may later be accessed by a link-tracking subscriber, such as by logging onto the link-tracking server. A content provider embeds link-tracking code in each Web page where link-tracking information is desired to be captured. Such Web pages embedded with such link-tracking code are then stored in a content provider server, which then serves such tracking-enabled Web pages to users on the network. When a user requests a tracking-enabled page, the link-tracking code sends one or more requests to a link-tracking server to record link-tracking information.

Abstract: A method is provided in an application server for executing a calling application. The method includes receiving an HTTP request for execution of a calling application operation for a caller. A selected extensible markup language (XML) document is accessed in response to reception of the HTML request. Based on the XML document, a first HTML page including prompts is generated for the caller. A directory is accessed based on an input from the caller to obtain called party information. A second HTML page is generated having instructions for contacting the called party. Hence, calling services may be deployed on a platform that is customizable, scalable, and built upon open standards such as Internet protocol. By directly contacting an application server upon picking-up a telephone device, an intelligent system is provided for making telephone calls over an IP network.

Abstract: A method and system is provided for detecting, commanding and controlling diverse home devices currently connected to a home network. An interface is provided for accessing the home devices that are currently connected to a home network. According to the method, a device link file is generated, wherein the device link file identifies home devices that are currently connected to the home network. A device link page is created, wherein the device link page contains a device button that is associated with each home device that is identified in the device link file. A hyper-text link is associated with each device button, wherein the hyper-text link provides a link to an HTML page that is contained on the home device that is associated with the device button, and the device link page is displayed on a browser based home device.

Abstract: A user interface architecture wherein user content and user interface are composed of documents with links is described. User content documents and user interface documents are both displayed in a single viewing frame. A non-linear navigation history is maintained such that a user can navigate along a first path, back up using a previous link, navigate along a second path, back up along the second path using the previous link, and re-navigate along the first path again using a next link. Every document page to which a user navigates is saved in the user's navigation history. Users can query their navigation histories and view their navigation histories in various ways. Users can access, annotate, and customize the user interface in the same manner in which users access, annotate, and modify user content documents.

Abstract: A method for presenting a page, having a set of links, on a data processing system is provided. The page is preprocessed to form a processed page, wherein the processed page is unpresented within the data processing system. A determination is made as to whether or not the links within the page fall within a proximity policy. Responsive to a determination that the page falls outside of the proximity policy, the page is reformatted to fall within the proximity policy. The mechanism of the present invention includes a preprocessing process and a policy structure for reformatting an electronic document page. The policy structure of the present invention allows the user to specify the appearance of the electronic document page. The policy structure as defined by the user is stored such that when the user returns to the page, the page may be displayed according to the policy structure defined by the user.

Abstract: The present invention provides a technique of simply editing a source file described in a markup language. An editing server 700 receives specification data from a client 800 and edits an original source file in units of divisions in a grammatical framework, so as to create an edited source file. Editing-related buttons for specifying deletion and decomposition of each division is added to the division. The user operates these buttons to edit the original source file in the markup language in units of the divisions. The editing method of obtaining a user's desired edited source file from the original source file is specified by parameters in a URL. The URL is adopted to readily and conveniently give a desirably edited image output from the original source file without storing the edited source file.

Abstract: Preparing a document for transmission over a network in a manner that increases the security of URLs included in the document. A server accesses a document that contains a number of URLs. For one or more of those URLs, the server calculates a digital signature that is unique to the intended recipient client, or unique to the user of the client. The server then modifies each of those URLs by including the digital signature in the URL. The document with the modified URLs in then transmitted over the network to the client. Thus, even if a sensitive URL is discovered, that modified URL is unique to the client only or to the user of the client only. Therefore, the damage that may be caused by an unauthorized user is limited to just that client or user.

Abstract: This invention discloses a system for creating voice XML file automatically, comprising: a graphic user interface for defining a plurality of icons, wherein each of said icons corresponds to one or more attributes of voice XML; voice XML tag generator for interpreting said action stream based on a library of voice XML tags, generating the corresponding voice XML tags; and, voice XML file generator for combing the contents to be played with the tags generated by the voice XML tag generator according voice XML syntax, for creating the voice XML file. This system can create the voice XML file for the TTS voice XML file or the real-time-recorded audio voice XML file.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for locating items on a physical document and a method for creating a geographical link from an electronic document to the physical document. The geographical link is created by encoding, in a geographic link to the physical document, geographic coordinates of a referenced item in the electronic document. The electronic document is not derived from the physical document. Locating items on the physical document includes calibrating an opto-touch foil that is aligned on the physical document, including processing a calibration location included in locations appearing in the physical document and referred to in the electronic document. For each location, foil coordinates of the opto-touch foil corresponding to where each location appears in the physical document are computed utilizing geographic coordinates of each location and a generated calibration relationship between the geographic coordinates of the calibration location and calibration foil coordinates of the opto-touch foil.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to the automatic provision of “bubble links” for accessing data services and selectable elements in a GUI of a computing device. The present invention includes the provision of a renderer to a computing device equipped to automatically present bubble links associated with input characters to a user of the computing device to improve the ease of use in accessing data services and selectable elements using the computing device.

Abstract: A method for providing sponsorship for a directory comprises permitting a search of the directory. The method further comprising displaying a search result on a page and incorporating a designated web page of a sponsor on the same page as the search result.

Abstract: Prominence data resulting from user interaction with a hyperlink on a page may be stored in one or more repositories. Prominence data may be collected automatically when the user views a page or clicks on a hyperlink without requiring separate action from the user to accomplish storage or retrieval. The prominence data may further include a display parameter that denotes a level of prominence that is usable to affect the display of a hyperlink. A prominence score used to determine the display parameter may be calculated by dividing a count of click-throughs by a count of page views of the page containing the hyperlink. Other score calculations may be used. User feedback may be incorporated into the score calculation and may be collected through a toolbar, popup window, or other feedback-collecting mechanism.

Abstract: The present invention involves a new system and process for automatically scanning or parsing an electronic document or information displayed on a computer display device to find any data that represents at least one person. Once data representing a person has been found, the person is automatically identified. Next, data or information relevant to that person is automatically retrieved from at least one electronic database. Finally, once the relevant data for the person has been retrieved, a user is automatically notified, via a visible or audible alert, that the person has been identified, and that information relevant to that person is available. Further, in one embodiment, one or more links to the retrieved information are automatically provided to the user along with the audible or visual alert. In addition, in a further embodiment, the present invention provides the user with at least one access point for initiating communication with the identified person.

Abstract: A system for creating links among diverse elements in order to convey a variety of logical relationships. The system uses a unique approach to browser development in order to allow for the delayed transformation of data which has undergone either a change to its actual value, or a change in its relationship to other data. Linked data is left unevaluated until a user desires to view the data through a user interface. This delayed evaluation conserves bandwidth and system resources, and further enables the system to more efficiently create, organize, and maintain relationships between large volumes of diverse elements.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for determining relative quality of search engine indexes and search results include performing a two-level random walk through a hypertext-linked document set. Search engine index quality is measured based on the number of encountered documents that are indexed by the search engine index. Search result quality is measured based on the number and quality of documents that link to the result document.

Abstract: Communications between participants over a communications link are proxied by an intermediary, such as an Integrated Order Mechanism (IOM). Participants interact with each other through the IOM. The IOM may be transparent to the participants such that they are not aware that the IOM is involved in processing communications. For example, in the context of a transaction by a customer making a purchase from a merchant over the Internet, the IOM facilitates the processing of transactions by processing requests from both the customer and the merchant. Neither the customer nor the merchant may be aware that the transactions are being handled by the IOM. Navigation objects may be provided for the communications over a network. For example, a navigation bar may be included on a merchant web page to provide the customer with a link back to a shopping application provided by the IOM.

Abstract: A document publishing system. Documents can be automatically linked. Links are automatically created within a document to other documents, or to locations within the same document.

Abstract: A content management system (CMS) provides a way to minimize accesses to a repository when reconstituting a document. When a document is first reconstituted, the CMS reads links in the document, reads the corresponding objects from the repository, then stores the values of those objects in fallback elements in the document. In addition, a list is generated that provides both original links to the objects in the repository and voidable links to those object, and the document is then modified, if needed, to reference the voidable links. When the document needs to be subsequently reconstituted, the repository is queried to determine which of the objects corresponding to the original links have not changed since the last reconstitution. If the object has not changed, the voidable link in the list is invalidated for the object, causing the fallback element to be used without accessing the repository.

Abstract: Enabling the user to link a selected sequence of hypertext World Wide Web (Web) documents into a string and to store the string at his receiving Web display station so that these documents will be available for his use. An implementation at a receiving display station is provided for designating a received Web document as a starter document and for selecting a subsequently received Web document as a first next document. An implementation is provided for creating a hyperlink in the starter document to the first next document, together with means for storing said starter and next documents at said receiving display station. The invention further provides for an extension of the selected documents into a string through selecting one or more subsequently received Web documents as a subsequent next document and creating a hyperlink in the first next document to the subsequent next document.

Abstract: Embodiments for hyperlink content abstraction are disclosed. In one embodiment a method of hyperlink content abstraction includes selecting a hyperlink with a user directed pointing device, implementing computing device executable instructions to access an electronic document linked to the hyperlink, analyzing a number of content items within the electronic document to determine the content of the document, and compiling a summary of the content of the electronic document based upon the analysis.

Abstract: Document links may be efficiently managed by providing automated techniques for organizing them. In particular implementations, a system and process for automated management of document links may include the ability to determine that a link is to be established for a document and identify at least one descriptor for the document. The system and process may also include the ability to correlate the identified document descriptor(s) with at least one document descriptors in a pre-existing taxonomy of document descriptors and associate the correlated taxonomy document descriptor(s) with a link for the document.

Then for each token the following acts are performed: determining a weight for the token, determining whether the weight assigned to the token exceeds a threshold token weight; and indexing the document under the token, if the token weight assigned to the token exceeds the threshold token weight.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method for generating a publication is provided. The method includes determining a template for one or more pages of the publication. A structured document for the publication is generated where the structured document includes entry fields corresponding to the one or more addressable blocks. The structured document is then sent to one or more entities to allow users to input information for different versions of the publication. After the entities enter in information, a structured document is received from each of the plurality of entities. Information in the structured document refers to version information. A design application version of the structured document is then generated from the different structured documents received from the plurality of entities. The plurality of versions of the publication are then automatically generated.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention address deficiencies of the art in respect to embedded hyperlinks in method content for a process modeler and provide a method, system and computer program product for self-maintaining hyperlinks in method content for a process modeler. In one embodiment of the invention, a self-maintaining hyperlink management method can be provided. The method can include parsing a method element in a process model to locate a self-maintaining hyperlink, locating a unique identifier in the self-maintaining hyperlink, retrieving data for external content associated with the unique identifier and replacing placeholder content in the self-maintaining hyperlink with the retrieved data. Thereafter, the process model can be published with the retrieved data in place of the placeholder content in the self-maintaining hyperlink.

Abstract: A method of data processing includes detecting insertion of a uniform resource locator (URL) into text of a document of an application program. In response to detecting insertion of the URL, a web page corresponding to the URL is accessed, and a title of the web page is determined. The URL is then replaced with a textual string derived from the title in place of the URL in the text of the document.

Abstract: The invention is an application to interact with user and concurrently extract titles, descriptions and emails from the web page pointed by a list of URLs. The user can directly input a list of URLs, or alternatively, a location that contains a list of URLs. The system will generate link texts and email messages; the user evaluates and edits the automatically generated results and submits the data to be formatted for web page, saved into a file, sent as email, or inserted into database.
