Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for storing a mark-up language file and delivering the file from a network server to a user's computer via a packet switched data network using a hyper-text transfer protocol (HTTP). The mark-up language file is stored in a storage area accessible by the network server, wherein the file contains information personal to the user. A notification is transmitted to the user's computer, wherein the notification serves to notify the user of the availability of the file. In response to a user request made in response to the notification, the mark-up language file is transmitted from the network server to the user's computer, via the packet switched data network, using the HTTP.

Abstract: A method and system for improving the quality of original metadata associated with media on a computer network, such as multimedia and streaming media, includes analyzing each field of the URL of the multimedia and streaming media. Each field is analyzed to identify new metadata associated with that field. Identified new metadata is added to the original metadata. In another embodiment, the fields in the URL are reorganized in reverse order and metadata associated with a prefix of fields of the reorganized URL is added to the original metadata. In yet another embodiment, the contents of the field next to the prefix of fields is used to improve the quality of the original metadata.

Abstract: A method, system, and graphical user interface for alerting a computer user to new results for a prior search are disclosed. One aspect of the invention involves a graphical user interface on a computer that includes a plurality of links recommended by a search engine for a computer user. The plurality of links are determined by the search engine by: producing search results by rerunning a plurality of search queries that have been performed previously for the computer user; and evaluating the produced search results to select search results that meet predefined search result selection criteria. At least one of the criteria is based on Internet usage data for the user.

Abstract: Navigation from content to a portal page is provided by identifying a name of a first object in content to be displayed in a computer system. A first portal page is configured to present information about the first object. Metadata of a kind that, when received by the portal, causes the first portal page to be displayed, is obtained. An input control associated with the name of the first object is created in the content, the metadata to be forwarded to the portal upon a user activating the input control. A GUI comprises a portal area for displaying a first portal page associated with a first object upon the portal receiving metadata for the first object, and a content presentation area including an input control that is associated with a name of the first object. Upon a user activating the input control the metadata is forwarded to the portal.

Abstract: A web-based system scans content for specific terms, and transforms occurrences of the terms into hypertext links. Each hypertext link provides access to a dynamically generated web page which contains aggregated content related to the respective term. The aggregated content may be gathered through a distributed keyword search of various content sources, including web sites and other sources on a wide area network. The results of the keyword search are aggregated into a single page or document, preferably with filtering to remove page elements not well suited for display on a mobile device. Occurrences of specific terms on this dynamically generated page may similarly be transformed into links, such that the user can browse content from various sources within a confined environment.

Abstract: A technique for generating links to a web page by: presenting a web page; defining one or more other web pages to include a link to the presented web page; and placing a link on at least one of the other web pages linking to the presented web page. A prompt for an acceptance of the link may be presented to the other web pages whereby a link is not added until the corresponding acceptance of the link is received.

Abstract: In order to enable a mobile terminal where software necessary to open a document file is not installed to display a document linked from a markup document such as an HTML document, a document link converting system converts an HTML of a web page requested by a mobile terminal in accordance with a terminal type of the mobile terminal which requests an access to the web page, and sends the converted HTML to the mobile terminal. When a document is specified by the mobile terminal, the document link converting system sends an application for browsing the document to the mobile terminal, creates an image for browsing the specified document, and sends the created image to the mobile terminal. The mobile terminal displays the image for browsing with using the received application for browsing the document.

Abstract: Prominence data resulting from user interaction with a hyperlink on a page may be stored in one or more repositories. Prominence data may be collected automatically when the user views a page or clicks on a hyperlink without requiring separate action from the user to accomplish storage or retrieval. The prominence data may further include a display parameter that denotes a level of prominence that is usable to affect the display of a hyperlink. A prominence score used to determine the display parameter may be calculated by dividing a count of click-throughs by a count of page views of the page containing the hyperlink. Other score calculations may be used. User feedback may be incorporated into the score calculation and may be collected through a toolbar, popup window, or other feedback-collecting mechanism.

Abstract: A facility for navigating within a body of data using one of a number of distinct browse graphs is described. Initially, a navigation request is received. Based upon information contained in the received navigation request, the facility selects one of the plurality of browse graphs. Abstract: A method and system for enabling the display of portions of internet documents that have been highlighted by users of a highlighting service are disclosed. Accordingly, a highlighting service includes a web portal with a web page providing users with a snippet of code, which, when inserted into an internet document, causes the internet document to display highlights from the highlighting service. The snippet of code can be configured to query the highlighting service for highlights that were made by certain users, or, highlights made on documents from certain domains, and so forth. The code associated with the user interface object displaying the highlights can e configured to periodically query the highlighting service to retrieve up-to-date highlights, thereby dynamically changing the highlights appearing on a web page or internet document.

Abstract: An architecture and methodology of redirection for dynamic new URL Links uses a first server device to get information flow content from a second server device. By inserting an application into the information flow content retrieved from the second server device, the first server device replaces the web objects, which may generate dynamic new URL links, with the redirect functions in the code and sends the content to the browser. The browser will execute the code automatically. Whenever the browser generates new dynamic new URL links, it would call the provided redirect functions, and thus redirect them and retrace back to the first server device.

Abstract: A data acquisition and perusal system and method which enable: selection of a plurality of files for inclusion into at least one selectable database; generation of a searchable index of the data contained in the selectable database; and searches of the searchable index according to search criteria. This invention allows users to view, acquire, and generate single- or multiple-data sources locally or remotely, and to compile, index, modify, and append the data sources according to default or user defined criteria. Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing requests for delivery of electronic content is provided. According to one aspect of the invention, a request for delivery of first electronic content is received, where (1) the request is for delivery of the first electronic content to a destination client that is not on a local network, and (2) the first electronic content includes one or more links that are only resolvable within the local network. In response to the request, the first electronic content is retrieved, and first updated content is generated by modifying the one or more links associated with the first electronic content to include information identifying a server that can be addressed outside the local network. Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for providing persistent storage of Web resources. Uniform Resource Locators (“URLs”) that identify Web resources are augmented to include a time stamp. A web browser and a web server are disclosed that accommodate a time stamp parameter and allow a user to refer to any Web address with a precise target date. The disclosed Web browser can optionally include a mechanism to facilitate the specification of the desired date and time, or the user can manually append the time stamp to the URL indicated in the “Location” window of the browser. The persistent Web servers (i) receive URLs containing a time stamp, (ii) extract the time stamp, (iii) retrieve the correct Web page from the archive, and (iv) return the requested page to the client. The persistent Web servers include a persistent archive for storing all of the versions of Web resources that will be persistently available to Web users.

Abstract: A computer implemented method of processing an image for display on a mobile communication device includes extracting a portion of an image based on an image map. The image map relates to the portion of the image. The method also includes generating a document that comprises the extracted portion of the image and transmitting the generated document to a remote device for display. The method may also include assigning a selectable link to the extracted portion of the image and receiving a request from the remote device for an initial document having the image and image map. Abstract: A content management system (CMS) provides a way to minimize accesses to a repository when reconstituting a document. When a document is first reconstituted, the CMS reads links in the document, reads the corresponding objects from the repository, then stores the values of those objects in fallback elements in the document. In addition, a list is generated that provides both original links to the objects in the repository and voidable links to those object, and the document is then modified, if needed, to reference the voidable links. When the document needs to be subsequently reconstituted, the repository is queried to determine which of the objects corresponding to the original links have not changed since the last reconstitution. If the object has not changed, the voidable link in the list is invalidated for the object, causing the fallback element to be used without accessing the repository.

Abstract: A user may discover and navigate among hyperlinks through the use of a keyboard. For example, a user may press a tab key to discover and navigate to a first hyperlink that is part of a hypertext document. The web page in which the changed URL has been embedded is displayed on the client terminal. If the proxy server is requested for the web page of the changed URL, the proxy server restores the URL to the URL that prevailed before the change and also reads the cookie information. The proxy server then requests the web server for both the web page of the URL that prevailed before the change and the cookie information. Thus the web server can utilize the cookie information even though the client terminal cannot.

Abstract: A protocol for automatically fixing broken hypertext links is described that can save countless hours wasted by World-Wide Web surfers trying to navigate using a broken link or web authors trying to fix broken links to their web pages. A link correction service checks hypertext links in a document by sending messages according to a hyperlink verification protocol (HLVP) to a remote web server indicated by the link. A link checking service at the remote web server, in response to receiving an HLVP message for a link, consults a mapping table to determine if the link is valid, has changed, has been removed, or is unknown. A response code indicating the status of the link is returned to the link correction service to modify the page accordingly.

Abstract: Methods and systems for monetizing editorial and user-generated content via conversion into affiliate marketing links. Aspects of the disclosure, for example, are directed to methods and systems configured to enable rewriting of URLs based on a synchronized database of merchants collected from a breadth of affiliate networks. In several embodiments, for example, upon posting of a URL to a user-generated website or on clicking of a URL on such a site by a user, the server system compares the domain name of the URL against a database of merchants synchronized across multiple affiliate networks. When a merchant's domain name is found, the server system may convert the URL using a deep linking syntax outlined in the merchant database so that the URL becomes an affiliate link that leads to the original URL via the corresponding affiliate network.
