Abstract: There are disclosed systems and methods for aiding programmers in identifying a location in a program while coding. In an embodiment, the method comprises defining a plurality of sections of code within the program, associating at least one section of code with a background color, and displaying the at least one section of code against the associated background color. Sections of code corresponding to the same module may be associated with the same background color. A user-selectable control may be provided for viewing only those sections of code corresponding to a user-selected module, and upon selection of the module by the user, only those sections of code corresponding to the module may be displayed against the associated background color. A text description may also be associated with each section of code, and the text description may be displayed when a cursor is placed in the section of code.

Abstract: An interactive system is provided. The interactive system includes a handheld device and an insertion device. An interactive application program is embedded into the handheld device. The insertion device has a protective case for protecting the handheld device, and the insertion device also has a slave circuit, where the insertion device does not have a screen or a keypad. When the interactive application program is activated by a user through putting the handheld device into the insertion device, the handheld device will display an interactive graphical user interface so as to guide the user to set the insertion device, and the handheld device controls the functions of the slave circuit.

Abstract: Systems and methods to facilitate the navigation of functions of an application of a mobile device using a gestural input scheme. A navigation scheme based on simple user-initiated gestures reduces the safety hazards and physical challenges that are introduced when interacting with a mobile device in the wild. A mobile device having a motion sensor is programmed with an application that allows a user to navigate between the various functions (e.g., features, screens, and menu options) of the application by moving the mobile device according to predefined gestures. The motion sensor in the mobile device senses a user gesture imposed on the mobile device and the application on the mobile device responds to the gesture by navigating to the function that is correlated to the gesture as part of the application.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing a help function of a portable terminal are provided. The method for providing help of a portable terminal preferably includes: selecting a recommended help based on weights of respective help items set according to usage frequencies of respective functions included in the portable; displaying the selected recommended help; and reducing a weight of a help item corresponding to the selected recommended help by a preset size. The method and the apparatus apply a high weight to an added function, a changed function, and a function not used by a user, and outputs a selected recommended help (tip) based on the weight that allow the user to conveniently pick up and suitably use various functions of the portable terminal.

Abstract: A mobile communication device is provided. The mobile communication device comprises a touch screen adapted for receiving touch inputs and for presenting a visual display, a processor coupled to the touch screen, and an application. The application, when executed by the processor, analyzes a plurality of inputs to the mobile communication device to infer a behavior pattern and presents a sequence of teachings about how to use selected features of the mobile communication device on the touch screen, the selected features distinct from the inputs and selected based on the inferred behavior pattern.

Abstract: The present invention provides an interactive multimedia system for providing structured information systems, for example help systems for desktop and network based applications. The invention employs an interactive multimedia runtime container and rich media content and other data files for the structured system navigational components such as the Table of Contents (TOC), Index, Search, and Glossary. In another aspect, the invention provides a structured navigation interface through the use of rich media files driven by data files which allow the user or the author to create a customized appearance for the structured information system. The system is advantageously cross-browser and cross-platform compatible and ensures consistent navigation and look and feel across platforms and browsers.

Abstract: A user interface display for software has a user satisfaction portion displayed on each page. The user satisfaction portion includes a user selectable element which allows a user to provide a user satisfaction score (or level) with a single mouse click. In response to receiving the user satisfaction level, the context of the software which the user is using is recorded, and the user satisfaction level is correlated to that context. The captured data can be provided to application designers and developers directly or via computed metrics.

Abstract: An enhancement implementation analysis method and system are provided. A processor may determine a node in an implementation guide hierarchy to be analyzed for conflicts. Based on the determination, a list of all switches assigned to the node in the implementation guide hierarchy may be retrieved from a data store. The list of retrieved switches may be checked by a processor to determine whether the switch is an active conflict switch. Upon a determination that the conflict switch is an inactive conflict switch, the conflict switch may be deleted from the retrieved list of all switches. If the conflict switch is determined to be an active conflict switch, the conflict switch may be added to a list of relevant switches, and the list of relevant switches may be processed to resolve conflicts, and a corresponding implementation guide may be presented.

Abstract: A virtual tour and display begins with an initial view of a start location. The user navigates by clicking on navigational arrows located on the various spaces, such as halls or galleries or store areas, in each case initiating an animated movie which either turns the user within the same space or goes to a different location within the same space or by moving to a different space. A user can move to a gallery, which displays thumbnail images, such as a pictures on a wall, or clothing on a wall or rack or other items to be viewed. The user can select one of the thumbnail images, such as a picture to be viewed and have a full screen view of the selected image or hear an audio clip about the selected image, or other options.

Abstract: A system and method for controlling operation of a computer based on movements and/or position of a movable object. The system includes a sensing apparatus configured to obtain positional data based on movements of a sensed object. Engine software may process the positional data and generate control commands to produce a virtual position in an application running on the computer. A visual comparator is operatively coupled with the engine software and configured to display an actual indicator and a virtual indicator to provide a visual comparison between the virtual position and the actual position of the sensed object.

Abstract: A method of composing a web page is described. The method includes transmitting an authoring web page including an embedded authoring tool to a client computer using a network. The authoring tool may be used to compose the web page. Web-page content corresponding to the composed web page is received from the client computer. The composed web page may include one or more regions for displaying one or more advertisements having one or more links to one or more content locations. In another aspect of the disclosure, an advertising program registration module may include a link or other mechanism for sending the authoring web page to a publisher registering to participate in the advertising program.

Abstract: A media application for providing outputs (e.g., audio outputs) in response to inputs received from an input device is provided. The media application may connect input mechanisms of an input device with parameters of channel strips (e.g., which may define output sounds) using an intermediate screen object. The media application may first assign an input mechanism to a screen object, and separately map a screen object to a channel strip parameter. The media application may map a screen object to several channel strips simultaneously such that, based on the value of the screen object, the volume of each of the several channel strips changes. The media application may provide a graphical representation of available channel strips using layers. As the media application accesses a channel strip, the appearance of the portion of the layer associated with the channel strip may change.

Abstract: There is provided an apparatus for aligning document actions specified in a documented procedure with demonstrated user actions. The apparatus includes an alignment device for computing an alignment between the document actions and the demonstrated user actions based on at least one similarity metric.

Abstract: Generating popularity ratings for virtual world artifacts based on how often and in what manner avatars access the artifacts is provided. The popularity ratings for virtual world artifacts may be used to determine what virtual world artifacts are selected to have a prominent presence in a virtual world. When an event caused by an avatar accessing a virtual world artifact in a virtual world is detected, the illustrative embodiments receive information about the event, such as the event type, the avatar identifier (ID), and the time the event occurred. The illustrative embodiments generate a rating score for the virtual world artifact based on the information received about the event. The illustrative embodiments update a rendering of the virtual world artifact in the virtual world based on the rating score.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing a custom action for an information post are described. In one embodiment, data for generating a user interface component for display at a client machine may be transmitted from a server to the client machine. The user interface component displaying one or more information posts may be capable of being generated in accordance with first computing programming language instructions provided by a first entity. Each information post may include information relating to a record stored on a storage medium accessible to the server. Selected ones of the information posts may have associated therewith a custom action activation mechanism for activating a custom action relating to the associated information post. The custom action activation mechanism may be capable of being generated in accordance with second computer programming language instructions provided by a second entity.

Abstract: A system provides task-oriented enhancement of a software application that allows for remote, Web-based, technical support. The system observes user-interactive elements in the software application. Based on the observed user-interactive elements, the system generates at least one task indication and at least one respective instruction indication associated with the software application. Generation of the indications may be done dynamically as the software application loads or executes. The system may be activated locally or remotely to provide technical support, or “coaching”, to a user. The system may also be used to generate documentation for the software application.

Abstract: An on-board input and management device is disclosed. In an exemplary implementation, a method of managing a blade computing system may include monitoring current systems status in a blade computing system with an integrated management controller. The method may also include using the integrated management controller for user interaction to monitor and modify configuration of a plurality of modules in the blade computing system. In an exemplary embodiment, all of the modules in the blade computing system may be monitored and managed.

Abstract: An arrangement for determining those optimal times to permit an important pop-up message to be displayed by way of garnering a user's attention, while permitting less important messages to be displayed at times when a user's attention is unlikely to be garnered. In accordance with a particularly preferred embodiment, an arrangement is provided to recognize whether a user is looking towards a computer monitor and, at such times, to determine whether a blink rate of the user's eyes corresponds to a degree of focus and concentration that would ensure a strong likelihood of the user seeing or “catching” a message that may then appear. If such likelihood is thus determined to be strong, then a critical message may preferably then be displayed.

Abstract: Visual images of computer components are provided to remotely guide users through the process of setting up physical connections. Component identifying information is automatically gleaned and provided from a user's computer to a remote administrator. The administrator provides visual images of the components to the user, and remotely annotates them to guide the user through the configuration process. Image annotation can include pointing to a specific section of the image (e.g., the plug into which a cable is to be inserted) and/or drawing or writing on or otherwise marking-up the image to direct the user's attention. The visual image-based guidance can be supplemented by voice communication with the user.

The system include a processor, an application attributes discovery module which provides one or more attributes associated with an application running on the electronic device, a system state discovery module which provides system information associated with components of the electronic device, a help infrastructure module which uses the system information and application attributes to determine a help context at the time a user invokes a request for help, a help context mapping module which includes one or more help contexts including a context node that best matches the system state information and which contains one or more help topic identifiers that are mapped to help topics, a help topic collection module that provides one or more help topics corresponding to the help topic identifiers and a help viewer that displays the help topics.

A storage unit stores a job guidance file and a correspondence list file indicating correspondences between procedure IDs, codes, buttons, etc. in the job guidance file and screen IDs for device control program software. When an operator selects the procedure ID or the like in a displayed job guidance window, control is performed such that the screen ID corresponding to the selected procedure ID or the like is searched for in the correspondence list file, and the displayed screen is shifted to one corresponding to the searched screen ID for the device control program software.

Abstract: A method, system and article of manufacture for hover help management in data processing systems and, more particularly, for providing dynamic and intelligent hover assistance in graphical user interfaces. One embodiment provides a method of displaying hover assistance on a display screen. The method comprises moving a pointer element to a position over a user interface element shown on the display screen in response to user manipulation of a pointing device, while the pointer element is positioned over the user interface element, invoking a first hover element for display on the display screen, and invoking a second hover element for display on the display screen after invoking the first hover element, and while the pointer element continues to be positioned over the user interface element.

Abstract: A graphical user interface device includes an operation procedure information database, a display element information database, an operation determination section, a display element selection section, and an integrated procedure and display-element screen preparation section. Procedure information and a display item to be operated by an operator are registered in the operation procedure information database. The procedure information is text information forming an operation manual. The operation determination section determines a current operation step based on information given from an actual plant. The integrated procedure and display-element screen preparation section prepares a layout of an operation screen allowing the procedure information and the display item of the current operation step to be simultaneously displayed on a single screen of the input/output equipment.

Abstract: Graphical user interfaces, systems, and methods of implementing electronic flashcards are disclosed. Embodiments provide an interface for enabling information on a selected side of an electronic flashcard to be displayed and hidden. For example, the information on a first side of an electronic flashcard may be displayed while the information on the second side is hidden, thereby enabling a user to test himself or herself before revealing the information on the second side of the electronic flashcard. The interface may also enable placement or storage of inactive electronic flashcards in multiple piles or stacks. For example, electronic flashcards which have not yet been viewed may be displayed in a first pile, while previously viewed flashcards may be displayed in one or more additional stacks. Additionally, the interface may limit the number of flashcards in one or more of the stacks. Further, the interface may perform automated shuffling of the flashcards.

Abstract: A system and method for displaying content in a browser window associated with an end-user is described. In one implementation, data that includes links is received from a content provider, each of the links is identified and encoded, and the received data along with the links are displayed in the end-user's browser window.

Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for generating a help interface to present static help content and customized help content for an application. Help content data is accessed to define the static help content and a control command to support incorporation of the customized help content. The control command is implemented to determine a configuration of the application, and a user context is determined based on a user characteristic and the application configuration. The customized help content is then resolved based on the control command and the user context. In some cases, a help system may include a help viewer module or program in communication with a computer-readable memory storing the help content data. The help viewer may then render the help interface based on the static help content and customized help content resolved from the control command, the application configuration, and other aspects of the user context in which it is presented.

Abstract: Various technologies and techniques are disclosed that improve the instructional nature of fonts and/or the ability to create instructional fonts. Font characters are modified based on user interaction to enhance the user's understanding and/or fluency of the word. The font characters can have sound, motion, and altered appearance. When altering the appearance of the characters, the system operates on a set of control points associated with characters, changes the position of the characters, and changes the influence of the portion of characters on a set of respective spline curves. A designer or other user can customize the fonts and user experience by creating an episode package that specifies words to include in the user interface, and details about actions to take when certain events fire. The episode package can include media effects to play when a particular event associated with the media effect occurs.

Abstract: The present invention advantageously provides a method for interfacing an access control system and an input device, comprising the steps of displaying, on the input device, a set of choices from a plurality of choices, receiving one choice, and modifying the displayed set of choices based on the one choice, wherein modifying is performed by a heuristic method and/or a usage-based method. The heuristic method determines if one choice is a request for additional information, and, if it is, modifies the choices to include the additional information, and to exclude advanced and typical choices; and, if not, modifies the choices to include the advanced and typical choices. The usage-based method comprises incrementing a choice counter, if the counter is greater than multiple choices, modifying the choices to extra emphasize the choice, and if not, modifying the to emphasize the choice.

Abstract: Stereoscopic (3D) content streaming on PC from internet may become a commonplace practice. However, expecting a user to learn which formats and eyewear type to select for a particular display configuration type may be a challenge. Embodiments automatically discovers the PC system configuration and content formats being delivered, and using content-to-display format matching, adapts the content for best viewing quality for the user. The interactive application backed by a library instructs the user to setup the viewing configuration and conditions for optimum quality, removing the confusion choices can produce otherwise.

Abstract: A computer program of the type commonly known as a “wizard” is disclosed that initializes user interface software for controlling an audio conferencing device. The wizard allows the desired audio inputs (e.g., microphone, telephones, etc.) and audio outputs (speakers, recording devices, etc.) to be chosen by an audio system administrator. Thereafter, the wizard allows an audio conferencing device (or devices) to be chosen by the administrator, or allows such a device(s) to be optimally chosen dependent upon the chosen inputs and outputs. The wizard then maps the inputs and outputs to the input and output ports on the audio conferencing device. When the administrator finishes the wizard, the wizard computes the mapping parameters and other audio-optimizing parameters for the selected inputs and outputs. These parameters are then loaded into the user interface software automatically.

Abstract: A combinatorial search method and system is implemented in a computer control system for utilizing state-space planning of operations for multi-step production processes. The planner considers various possible combinations of actions, searching for one that correctly transforms the initial state of the object (or commodity) into the specified desired final state, where each combination of actions the planner considers is called a search node. Each node contains a plan representing a series of actions of a plurality of machines on a single object and also containing the predicted state of the object with those actions applied either forward or backward. The state of the object consists of the set of attributes of the object.
