Patent number: 8386956Abstract: A computer-human interface provides a mechanism to manage the available space of a computer display in a manner that facilitates navigation among multiple windows that are overlaid upon one another. The interface includes a user-selectable mode in which the windows are rearranged, and resized if necessary, so that all open windows can be simultaneously viewed within the area of the display, thereby enabling any one of the windows to be easily selected for access. In effect, the presentation of the windows is “flattened” so that all windows appear at the same virtual depth, rather than overlapping one another. With this approach, there is no need to minimize windows in order to access one that is overlaid by another, thereby enabling the user to keep the content of all windows visible and accessible. Subsets of windows can be repositioned in the same manner, or all windows can be removed from the display area for access to desktop objects.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 2007Date of Patent: February 26, 2013Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Bas Ording, John Louch

Patent number: 8370765Abstract: A computer system and method inhibit interruption of a user that is actively using the computer system. A user is actively using the computer system if the user has provided defined input within a time period specified in a “do not disturb” specification. For example, if the time period in the “do not disturb” specification is set to ten seconds, a user will not be interrupted by a potential interrupting event if the user has, for example, pressed a keyboard key or clicked a mouse key within ten seconds of the potential interrupting event. In this manner a user that is actively using a computer system will not be interrupted by potential interrupting events. In a first embodiment, the do not disturb mechanism is defined globally in the operating system. In a second embodiment, each software application may include a “do not disturb” specification.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 2004Date of Patent: February 5, 2013Inventor: Derek P. Martin

Patent number: 8209628Abstract: First and second objects are displayed on a pressure-sensitive touch-screen display device. Contact with the display device by an input mechanism is detected in a region corresponding to empty space. The movement of the input mechanism is tracked while it remains in contact with the display device. Movement of the input mechanism is detected as it moves to a point along the boundary of the second displayed object. In response, the pressure applied to the display device by the input mechanism is sensed. It is determined that the sensed pressure exceeds a threshold pressure value. Movement of the input mechanism is then detected as it moves to a new position on the display device. As a consequence of detecting the movement of the input mechanism to the new position and determining that the sensed pressure exceeds the threshold pressure value, a fold operation is applied to the second displayed object.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2009Date of Patent: June 26, 2012Assignee: Perceptive Pixel, Inc.Inventor: Philip L. Patent number: 8166417Abstract: In a case where a display control apparatus displays images A and B from respective PCs, a positioning operation using a positional device is started in an area of image A and continuously preformed in the area of that image. The apparatus determines whether or not a position designated in the area of image A has a predetermined positional relationship with an area of image B, partly covering the image A. If it is determined that the designated position has the predetermined positional relationship with the area of image B, the apparatus makes image B transparent. The apparatus then issues coordinates data indicating the designated position in the area of image B, to the PC for outputting image A.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2006Date of Patent: April 24, 2012Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Tadahiko Iijima
