Abstract: An apparatus, comprising: a user output device configured to display a first plurality of items from a list of items, each item having data portions in fields; a user input device configured to enable a user to select at least one character from a plurality of selectable characters and to associate the selected at least one character with a field; and processing circuitry configured to control the user output device to display a second plurality of items, the second plurality of items being selected from the list of items and ordered, wherein the selection and ordering is in dependence upon a comparison between the selected at least one character and the data portion that each item has in the associated field.

Abstract: A method includes displaying a first application view. A first input is detected, and an application view selection mode is entered for selecting one of concurrently open applications for display in a corresponding application view. An initial group of open application icons in a first predefined area and at least a portion of the first application view adjacent to the first predefined area are concurrently displayed. The initial group of open application icons corresponds to at least some of the concurrently open applications. A gesture is detected on a respective open application icon in the first predefined area, and a respective application view for a corresponding application is displayed without concurrently displaying an application view for any other application in the concurrently open applications. The open application icons in the first predefined area cease to be displayed, and the application view selection mode is exited.

The content processing system receives a first plurality of content and a first plurality of metadata from a first content provider, receives a first plurality of content categories corresponding to each of the respective first plurality of content. The content processing system receives a second plurality of content and a second plurality of metadata from a second content provider and receives a second plurality of content categories corresponding to each of the respective second plurality of content at a content processing system. The content processing system also receives homepage information for a first provider and communicates the first plurality of metadata, the second plurality of metadata, the first plurality of content categories and the second plurality of content categories to the user device.

Abstract: A computer controlled graphical user interface implementation comprising displaying a set of graphic tools in a primary container location on the display in combination with an implement for using a selected tool to create a graphic object at a selected display location that is changeable as the object is being created in which there are provided functions responsive to the creation of the graphic object for displaying a secondary container containing a duplicate of the selected tool proximate the location of the graphic object, the secondary container being dynamically moveable responsive to the graphics object creation.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method and tool for creating a virtual floral arrangement includes at least one electronic floral template, a flower type set associated with the floral template, the flower type set including one or more flower types, and a parameter set associated with at least one of the floral template and flower types, the parameter set including at least one randomizable parameter. A graphical user interface is configured to display the floral template and flower type set to the user, while also permitting the user to select from among the flower types for display. A flower randomizer is configured to randomize the randomizable parameter, to generate variations in appearance of the displayed flower type, so that a draft arrangement is created and displayed, which includes the template, the selected flower type and the randomized parameter.

A user-defined metalabel is assigned to each of the electronic files, web pages, or web site members. The electronic files, web pages, or web site members are organized as a function of the metalabels into a second hierarchical file structure existing simultaneously with the first hierarchical file structure on the recordable medium of the data processing system. The files, web pages, or web site members can be organized or grouped by the metalabels for efficient searching or following conversations of group members on social networking sites.

Abstract: A method of emailing photographs from a set top box is disclosed and includes presenting a menu of photographs at a television coupled to the set top box. The photographs within the menu can be highlighted using a remote control device. The method further includes presenting an email button at the television and presenting an address book. The address book contains at least one recipient email address. Further, the method includes sending an email addressed to the at least one recipient email address. In particular, the email includes a return email address that causes a response to the email to be sent to a location other than the set top box.

Abstract: A graphical user interface (GUI) having functionality for inline customization is disclosed. A first set of user manipulable elements are displayed within a GUI object. Each of the user manipulable elements of the first set is selectable for display within the GUI object. A selection of a second set of user manipulable elements from among the first set of elements is received. Unselected elements of the first set of elements are removed from the GUI object. The second set of user manipulable elements are displayed within the GUI object. In one aspect, a first user input renders the first set of user manipulable elements selectable for display within the GUI object, while a second user input renders the second set of user manipulable elements unselectable. In various aspects, the GUI object may be a window, a menu bar, or an object that describes properties of a file.

Abstract: A mechanism is provided for defining and managing virtual discussion threads in a generic synchronous conferencing system. A chat server and chat client define a virtual discussion thread (VDT) entity that includes a group of chat entries or parts of chat entries. The chat entries in a VDT logically belong to the same “hidden” discussion within a chat session. Use of the VDT enables a chat system to support a user in understanding existing discussions by showing VDTs available in the overall list of chat entries and evidencing the chat entries in a VDT.

Abstract: An improved user interface is provided for displaying a gallery of images showing different formatting options combinations that may be applied to a selected object. When a particular image is selected an associated formatting options combination is automatically applied to the selected object.

Abstract: Systems and methods for manipulating toolbar dimensions are provided. Each toolbar includes a number of toolbar components each having a first and second representation and the toolbar is associated with a reference value. As the toolbar dimensions are adjusted, if the reference value for the toolbar is between a first and second size thresholds, the toolbar is adjusted and displayed relative to the reference value while maintaining the relative position of the toolbar components displaying a first representation to each other. Alternatively, if the reference value for the toolbar is not between the first and second size thresholds, the toolbar is adjusted and displayed relative to the reference value while maintaining the relative position of the toolbar components displaying a second representation to each other.

The controller controls the image generator to generate the guide image. The display unit displays the guide image.

Abstract: Systems and methods enhance editing capabilities associated with a wide variety of different types of electronic documents. Such systems and methods may include a processor that maintains an electronic document having a first portion (e.g., an individual word, character, character string, or the like) provided by a recognizer (e.g., by handwriting or speech recognition software), and they may provide access to potential alternative characters, words, or character strings generated by the recognizer during various user editing functions and operations. Other data associated with the first portion of the document also may be stored and made available to the user during various functions and operations. This invention further relates to computer-readable media including instructions for performing various methods and/or operating various systems for editing electronic documents, including systems and methods like those described above.

A first control is provided that operates within the graphical user interface. The first control is manipulated in order to access a second control. The second control includes the data list and allows modification of the data list after the second control is accessed.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques that allow the user of a mobile device to select an avatar within a virtual world presented on the display screen of the mobile device. In some embodiments, a user manipulates a thumbwheel. As the thumbwheel is turned, the avatars on the display screen are highlighted one after another. The user then presses a thumbwheel button to select a desired avatar. Some embodiments allow the user to select more than one avatar at a time. Several highlighting techniques are available. In some embodiments, the user uses speech commands instead of a thumbwheel to highlight the avatars one by one. Speech input is also used to select one or more avatars. Some devices support a touch-screen interface. Embodiments for these devices allow the user to select an avatar by, for example, drawing an arc enclosing the avatar.

Abstract: Vehicle-mounted video cameras, if and when wirelessly connected via a hybrid transceiver of satellite and terrestrial links and either through a randomly-formed vehicle-to-vehicle network, or via mobile web links, may enable motorists behind the wheel to remotely see either on a navigator screen, or on a screen of mobile equipment, inclusive of handsets and tablet PCs, any real-time video images of traffic and/or street scenes, far beyond physical limits of human eyesight. In pursuing the said peer-to-peer advantages, the real-time street views targeted in any directions can be picked at the discretion of motorists, by transmitting the location-based inquiry to the targeted on-vehicle cameras, by tapping on an in-vehicle touchscreen or a mobile device screen and also by activating voice commands, if necessary.

A GUI selection control element is displayed. A GUI event identical to each of the first GUI event and the second GUI event for at least one other check box element is programmatically generated in response to detection of a selection of the GUI selection control element via a user input device.

Abstract: The present invention provides a system and methods for managing large user selections in an application. An invertible collection software module solves the problem of managing a large number of user selections within an application. When not inverted, the invertible collection tracks what a user has selected. When inverted, the invertible collection tracks what a user has not selected thus saving memory. One method may comprise defining a specific context having a set of items available for user selection, representing, by an empty inverted invertible collection, the selection of all items within the specific context, tracking one or more items a user has deselected within the specific context depending upon whether the collection is inverted or not inverted and tracking one or more items a user has deselected.

Abstract: The invention defines sets of items in a data processing system where the items can be visually represented in a graphical user interface by respective graphical elements which are individually selectable via the graphical user interface to permit indication by a user of items on which actions are to be performed in the system. The device is independent of the selection state of the elements, which remain individually selectable, and the set of items is independently selectable to permit actions to be performed on the set of items in the system. Set data defining the set of items is stored. The methods and apparatus allow the same item to be a member concurrently of more than one set for which the respective graphical devices concurrently identifies the graphical element corresponding to that item.

Abstract: Selections from a long list of elements on a Graphical User Interface (GUI) are presented. When a context window is presented for the selections, different cues are provided in the context window to provide feedback regarding the selections that are not in the current view, and to also facilitate rapid navigation to those selections on the GUI. Interaction with the GUI widgets within the context window, and interaction with the context window itself, facilitates the navigation toward the other selections that are not in the current view. Interaction with the GUI widgets also facilitates the preview of the selections that are not in the current view, thus making it easier to determine what has been selected without having to navigate to the view that contains those selections.

Abstract: A navigation device performs a route guidance based on a route from a current location to a destination. A communication controller sends a request for searching the route to a server. A guidance-information receiving unit receives information on the route from the server. A time measuring unit measures an elapsed time from a start of the route guidance. A guidance controller performs the route guidance based on the information received. The communication controller commands the navigation device to cut off a communication with the server and to stand by upon a determination that the elapsed time measured has reached a predetermined time and when the route is being guided or a current location is being checked by the guidance controller, to decrease a bandwidth usage between the navigation device and the server and to reduce a communication charge associated with the bandwidth usage.

The selection indicator may be rotated so a portion overlaps with the location occupied by a portion prior to rotation. A menu indicator is also presented on the display. The menu indicator comprises a selector icon and a list of representations of the object indicators indicated by selection indicator. The selector icon may be manipulated to indicate a single representation of an object indicator and to select the object indicator represented by the representation of the indicated object indicator.

Abstract: A control element for use in a graphical user interface, which combines the display features of the list box element and the pop-up menu element into a single GUI control element. The combined menu list control element is capable of displaying data in multiple states thereby allowing to it to optimally use the available display space for presenting data to the user. By allowing menu list control element to display data as either a list or a menu, it combines the advantages of lists and menus while avoiding their disadvantages.

Abstract: Methods for generating an embedded target image to be stored in a non-volatile memory device of an embedded system as firmware thereof are disclosed. A graphical user interface (GUI) editor is generated to facilitate a user in providing settings information for multiple pins of a chip installed in the embedded system. Source code is generated in response to operating results of the user of the GUI editor. Linking an object file compiled from the generated source code generates the embedded target image.

Abstract: Integrating multiple transport modes into a single communication stream on a computing device such as a mobile computing device. One or more recipients and one or more transport modes available for communication with the one or more recipients are provided to a user. An application program executing on the computing device receives a first message from the user to send to one or more selected recipients. The computing device transmits the received first message to the selected recipients via a first transport mode. Thereafter, the computing device receives a second message from one of the recipients via a second transport mode. The received second message is displayed to the user in the same communication stream by the application program. As an example, the user uses the application program to communicate with the recipients using text messaging, electronic mail message, and other transport modes.

Abstract: A system and method for providing a dynamic user interface for a dense three-dimensional scene with a navigation assistance panel is presented. Clusters of semantically scored documents are placed in a three-dimensional scene and are arranged as a cluster spine. Each cluster spine is projected into a two-dimensional display. Controls operating on the cluster spines in the display are presented in a user interface. Compasses framing the cluster spines within the display are provided. A label to identify one concept in one or more of the cluster spines appearing within at least one of the compasses is generated. A plurality of slots in the display positioned circumferentially around the compasses are defined. Each label is assigned to the slot outside of the compass for the cluster spine having a closest angularity to the slot. A perspective-altered rendition of the two-dimensional display is provided by a navigation assistant panel.

A system may sense at least one of a proximity of a content items to a selected content item and an association between content items, and grows the selection indication at a rate and/or shape and/or other representation that is determined by the proximity and/or association.

Abstract: In electronics devices, a user interface and method for presenting and selecting user selectable items with a limited number of inputs is described. In one embodiment, a portable media player, three buttons are utilized as hint selectors and choice items are associated with hints selectors and displayed with these hints. When a hint selector is actuated, choice items not associated with the hint selector are eliminated from the choice items list and the remaining choice items are again associated with the hint selectors for display to the user. This process is repeated until a single choice items is selected by the hint selector. In one embodiment this method requires a maximum of Logb(N) user inputs to make the selection (where N is the cardinality of choice items and b is the cardinality of hint selectors). In one of the described embodiments a method is given for calculating a first order hints and subsequent order hints to display with the choice items.

Various enhanced email features may be provided through one or more of the following components: a delete module, a reply module, a profile module, and a search module. The delete module enables a user to delete a selected message, a set of related messages, or the whole set except for the selected message. The reply module enables a user to send a reply message to all addresses associated and involved with an entire set of related messages. The profile module enables a dynamic interest profile to contain all relevant information from an outgoing message and a set of messages related to the outgoing message. The search module enables search results to include documents which match the user's query as well as documents related to the documents which match the user's query.

The method and system includes plural electronic medical templates specifically designed such that they reduce the complexity and risk associated with collecting patient encounter information, creating a medical diagnosis and help generate the appropriate number and type medical codes for a specific type of medical practice when processed. The medical codes and other types of processed patient encounter information are displayed in real-time on electronic medical records and invoices immediately after a patient encounter.

Abstract: An outwardly expandable radial menu, such as a plus-shaped menu, may be launched in a user interface screen and may include a center option and up to four other options arranged to the left, right, upward, and downward relative to the center option. The position of each of the options may be associated with certain option categories. A traditional selectable menu, such as drop down menu, may be appended to the plus-shaped menu. A determination may be made regarding whether a portion of the plus-shaped menu will exceed a display boundary of the user interface screen. A placeholder may be displayed in place of the portion that is determined to exceed the display boundary. In response to user navigation to the placeholder, the plus-shaped menu may be shifted so that the portion replaced by the placeholder may be displayed.

The use of graphical patient medical information permits rapid and improved conveyance of information, and improves recognition and understanding of the most relevant medical information.

Abstract: A system and method for interactive, computer-assisted object presentation in which object information is displayed in one more arrays. In some embodiments, object information is displayed in a two dimensional array wherein displayed object information can be selected by a user. In response to the selection, in some embodiments additional information is displayed about an object corresponding to the selected information. In some embodiments, the additional information includes one or more of a link to permit a user to buy the object (e.g., from an e-commerce web site) and a link to bid on the object (e.g., in an on-line auction). In some embodiments, at least a subset of the two arrays scrolls without user interaction. In some embodiments, object information is displayed in an first array from which a user can select multiple elements. In response to the selection, in some embodiments a second array is displayed with information about the multiple selected elements from the first array.
