  • Patent number: 8336356
Abstract: An apparatus and process for reducing variations in the profile of a sheet metal stock are shown and described. The process includes the use of two passes, each comprising two smoothing surfaces. The smoothing surfaces of each pass are mateable to define a profile between the smoothing surfaces. The profile defined between the smoothing surfaces of the first pass is substantially the inverse of the profile defined between the smoothing surfaces of the second pass. As a sheet metal is processed between the first and second passes, it is formed with the first profile and the second profile thereby reducing variations in the profile of the sheet metal.

  • Patent number: 7343769
Abstract: A corrugation forming apparatus includes, as forming members, a rack tool assembled to a slide table and a pinion tool which rotates with rotation of a shaft. The apparatus also includes, as a displacement synchronization mechanism, a feed rack integrally assembled to the table and a feed pinion gear in meshing engagement with the feed rack. When a handle is rotated, its rotational force is transmitted to the feed rack via the feed pinion gear, so that the rack tool moves along the axial direction, and the pinion tool rotates in synchronism with the movement of the rack tool. This enables forming of successive recesses and projections on the thin metal plate, while reducing ductile cracks and warpage.

Abstract: A crimping apparatus including a crimping station having a crimping press and at least one set of crimping tools. Each crimping tool includes a wire ram, an insulation ram, an anvil unit and a separating unit. The wire ram and the insulation ram of each crimping tool are associated with a ram holder and each of the ram holders includes crimping height-adjustment means. • Patent number: 5918497
Abstract: A metalworking iterative method of cold-working blanks into configurations having contiguously repeated predetermined forms wherein an advance-worked form functions to locate a succeeding form. A first portion of a blank is squeezed into a predetermined form in a forming position of a press. The predetermined form corresponds to one cycle of the reciprocal undulations of an undulated plate spring. The blank is then shifted in the feed direction of the press by a feed pitch corresponding to one undulation, thereby locating the worked first portion of the blank into a locating position of the press, meanwhile a pitch-length second portion is in the forming position. Accordingly, the accuracy of the succeeding press operation on the second portion in terms of its contiguous position relative to the worked first portion is secured.

Abstract: A spring forming machine is provided with closed-loop feedback from sensors which monitor dimensions of the coils and heads of the spring being formed, servo motors which control wire feed speed, coil radius and pitch forming elements, and coiling direction. Video cameras form pictorial images of the spring being formed. The images are digitized and fed to a central computer, along with images from similar machines forming similar springs, which compares the signals, such as photometric images, from the different machines, which represent actual spring dimensions, with a single stored image relating to the desired dimensions, such as head shape, coil diameter, and the positions and angles of bends. Discrepancies are correlated with causation data, such as feed roll slippage or material hardness variations, and adjustment signals are sent to the machines. Machines producing errors are interrogated more frequently by the computer. Large errors or failures to respond to adjustments triggers an alarm.

  • Patent number: 4368632
Abstract: Apparatus for reducing the cross sectional area of a wire comprises stabilizing means arranged to receive the wire and to limit extrusion thereof in a direction transverse to its length and movable projecting means for engaging the wire while restrained by the stabilizing means so as to effect a deformation of the wire and a concomitant reduction of its cross sectional area.

  • Patent number: 4318290
Abstract: A swaging machine for tight-swaging of end pieces (42) on a wire (44), cable, metal bar or metal filament having two with rolling grooves provided rolls (34,36) being freely rotatably mounted on two shaft journals secured to a base support. The machine is provided with a pulling device (54,56) that is securable by coupling means to the end piece when this end piece member is put in between the rolls and that can be controlled by an hydraulic driving unit (16) preferably for pulling the end piece between the rolls.

  • Patent number: 4159633
Abstract: Improved metallic rod product which substantially reduces die wear in wire drawing operations, and which provides other advantages during manufacturing. The exterior surface of the rod product is intentionally provided with a predetermined rough texture having certain characteristics, rather than the smooth bright surface conventionally imparted to metallic rod product intended for subsequent drawing into wire. Certain textured surface characteristics of the rod product reduce wear on the first few wire drawing dies by entraining lubricant as the rod moves through the dies, and carry the entrained lubricant into the dies, while at the same time avoiding some common wire drawing defects such as flakes and slivers. The textured-surface rod thus reduces frictional wear of the drawing dies, so that less force is required to draw the rod product through the dies and the useful life of the drawing dies is increased.

  • Patent number: 4041749
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for producing sheets or plates by hot rolling slabs in a number of passes, the slabs are alternately deformed more strongly and less strongly between a pair of rolls at least in one pass, and when the slabs are less strongly deformed, a condition according to which .alpha.' is equal to or smaller than .rho. is observed, while when the slabs are more strongly deformed, a condition according to which .rho. is smaller than .alpha. smaller than 2 .rho. is observed, .alpha. and .alpha.' being the angles of engagement and .rho. being the angle of friction, and differences in thickness in longitudinal direction of the slabs are levelled out in a subsequent pass.

  • Patent number: 3956915
Abstract: Continuous-strip process for improving ironing operations in the manufacture of drawn and ironed container bodies having a bottom wall and unitary sidewall. Strip surfaces are treated, in final cold reduction operations for flat rolled container stock, to produce sculptured surfaces with fine line impressions to hold lubricant on the exterior surface of the sidewall during ironing and to reduce intimate surface contact with the ironing mandrel on the interior surface. Electroplated protective coatings are not reflowed in order to maintain the surface indentations.
