  • Patent number: 7293446
Abstract: The invention relates to a coil box, which is mounted between a roughing rolling train and a finishing rolling train, for metal pre-strips, in particular steel strips, which are hot wound to form coils and are protected against further cooling in the vicinity of a winding and/or unwinding station (6) by means of heat-shield devices (7) on the front faces (5a; 5b) of the coils. The aim of the invention is to universally configure said coil box. To achieve this, the heat-shield devices (7) are configured from lateral walls (8; 8b) that can be pivoted to rest against the front faces (5a; 5b) of the coils and a pair of opposing heat-shield devices (7) can be aligned in parallel to different coil widths (5c).

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing thin hot-rolled steel strip with a final thickness of <1 mm from strip-cast feedstock in sequential steps, including surface descaling a cast feedstock, rolling the feedstock in six passes in a tandem Steckel roll line, coiling and uncoiling the feedstock after its first and second passage through the tandem Steckel roll line in furnaces arranged on the entry and exit sides of the tandem Steckel roll line. After a third passage through the Steckel roll line, the feedstock is coiled up in an exit-side coiling device having two furnaces one atop the other, which serves as a storage device for the roughed strip. Simultaneously with the coiling of the first strip, a second strip is uncoiled from the storage device. The cropped front end of the second strip is welded to the cropped rear end of the already uncoiled roughed strip.

  • Patent number: 6012312
Abstract: A double blank detector apparatus and method of operation determines the condition of when one blank, no blanks or more than two blanks are about to be fed into a press. An indicator bar advances relative to the number of blank sheets of material being detected and interrupts an infra-red light beam when only blank of material has been detected. Under this preferred condition, a signal is produced which allows a press located adjacent to the double blank detector to continue its stamping operation. Alternatively, if either a no blank or a double blank condition is sensed, then the indicator bar advances accordingly, thus not interrupting the infra-red light beam. During this condition, a signal is produced indicative of the situation thus notifying the operator that there is a problem and stopping the press from cycling.

Abstract: A machine for producing hot-rolled steel strip from input stock of continuously cast strip in sequential work steps. The input stock is thereby in a continuous casting machine with a cast-rolling device at a casting speed of 4 to 8 m/min and a solidification thickness of 90 to 125 mm. An oscillating continuous casting mold is used, which has concavity between the casting level and the mold exit. A strand guide device has concavity and/or centering and guiding elements to guide and center the slab in the area of its narrow sides in the strand guide stand. A cooling and insulating line is located between the continuous casting machine and the equalizing furnace for the strip-type input stock. Furthermore, a cross-transfer furnace 45 m in length and approximately 5 to 20 m wide is arranged after the continuous casting machine and in front of the roughing train.

  • Patent number: 5990464
Abstract: A method and hot rolling apparatus for producing a hot rolled steel sheet include a roughing rolling mill to roughing roll a heated slab into a sheet bar, at least one solenoid-type induction heater arranged for re-heating the sheet bar over its entire width, and a finish rolling mill arranged to finish roll the re-heated sheet bar into a hot rolled steel sheet having a predetermined thickness. An initial temperature before rolling is set to be low, and re-heating of the sheet bar is carried out around the middle of the hot rolling apparatus. The thermal energy required for rolling is thereby reduced as a whole without damaging the quality of the resulting hot rolled steel sheet. A descaling apparatus is provided prior to the finish rolling mill to remove oxide scales on surfaces of the sheet bar, whereby the resulting hot rolled steel sheet is free of scale flaws and exhibits superior surface properties.

  • Patent number: 5960663
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for controlling the lateral temperature control of hot material on a roller table of a hot roller mill employs adjustable heat-insulating panels below the hot material path, between the rollers of the roller table. Between each successive pair of rollers a number of the heat-insulating panels are arranged side by side, as a group spanning the width of the table. At least away from the entry end of the table, the panels of each group can be displaced selectively to allow a greater loss of heat from a central region of the hot material between its side edges than in the side edge regions themselves. The selective displacement of the panels can be preprogrammed to be determined by the characteristics of the hot material entering the roller table.

  • Patent number: 5951903
Abstract: According to the invention, the rear end of a preceding metal piece and a front end of a succeeding metal piece are heated, pressed and joined prior to the finishing hot rolling. An alternating magnetic field running through the metal pieces in the thickness direction thereof is generated in an end region on opposed faces of the respective metal pieces to perform heating. Another alternating magnetic field whose direction is reverse with respect to that of the former alternating magnetic field is partially generated in the end region on the opposed faces of the metal pieces and in either a region where the metal pieces exist or a region outside width ends of the metal pieces. This assures a uniform heating of the end region on the opposed faces of the metal pieces over their full width to reliably join the both metal pieces to each other.
