Patent number: 5771726Abstract: Apparatus and methods for uniformly twisting hollow, open-seam rods with preferably rectangular cross-sections for use as decorative curtain rods are disclosed. The twist extends throughout substantially the entire length of the rod. This feature enables a telescoped pair of rods, that is, a pair of rods with an inner rod dimensioned to slide into and out of an outer rod, to be twisted simultaneously such that the telescoping feature is maintained after twisting. The apparatus includes a rotatable first chuck and a substantially non-rotatable second chuck. Each chuck has male and female components to engage the inner and outer surfaces of a respective end of the rod. These components prevent buckling along the open seam and permit twisting throughout substantially the entire length of the rods. Sensor controls ensure uniform twisting and controlled unwinding of the rods.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1996Date of Patent: June 30, 1998Assignee: Kenney Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Keith M. Patent number: 5435162Abstract: A zone heating device has first and second spaced burners for heating first and second spaced sides of a metal plate during forming of a thickened edge along the edge of the metal plate. The first and second burners are elevationally movable by an actuator between first and second spaced transverse positions relative to the sides of the metal plate. Patent number: 5063767Abstract: A system and device for enabling the control of time intervals between billets in rolling mills of blocks or billets and/or similar equipments that allow such control is implemented using sensor controlled electronic circuits. The control system relies on a signal indicator which indicates to a mill operator the proper moment at which a billet has to be introduced in the first stand of the rolling mill. By observing a preset time interval and a real time interval indicator between billets, an effective time interval control technique for establishing an ideal spacing between billets minimizes the spacing gap guaranteeing, among other benefits, a significative increase in rolling mill productivity.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1989Date of Patent: November 12, 1991Inventor: Jose A. Patent number: 5009092Abstract: In a coiler arrangement having a housing and a mandrel penetrating the housing, rolling stock to be wound on and off the mandrel is conveyable from a roller table guiding the rolling stock through an opening of the housing to the mandrel by a pivot flap extending from the roller table to the vicinity of the mandrel and movable by a pivot drive. In order to be able to close the opening of the housing almost entirely during the coiling procedure, the pivot mounting of the pivot flap is realized on the periphery of the housing at a distance from the roller table, i.e., at a distance from the roller way formed by the table rollers. The pivot flap, with its free end, is pivotable into the roller way and, vice versa, is pivotable away from the roller way by closing the housing. At least one flap part is provided to extend the pivot flap in the direction opposite to its free end. The end of the flap part facing away from the pivot axis is pivotable from the region of the mandrel to the housing and vice versa.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1990Date of Patent: April 23, 1991Assignee: Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau GmbHInventor: Rudolf Buchegger

Patent number: 4991418Abstract: In a hot strip mill having a roughing mill, a finishing mill including a plurality of stands and a delay table having a coil box and being disposed between the roughing mill and the finishing mill, a temperature drop in the delay table is calculated for a model of the coil box portion and a model of the remaining portion of the delay table. The bar temperature on an entry side of the coil box is not calculated from the surface temperature on a delivery side of the roughing mill but from an average temperature obtained by operations. The lowering of the temperature of a bar on the delay table is obtained by only one non-repetitive calculation.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1989Date of Patent: February 12, 1991Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha ToshibaInventor: Fumio Yamada

Patent number: 4944174Abstract: A heating bath including molten metal is situated at an entry into a hot roll mill such that the metal stock entering the hot roll mill passes through the heating bath to acquire heat therefrom. A cooling bath including molten metal is situated at an exit from the hot roll mill such that the metal stock exiting from the hot roll mill passes through the cooling bath delivering heat thereto. The molten metal in each of the baths is caused to flow counter to the direction of passing of the metal stock therethrough to form within each bath a hotter fraction and a cooler fraction of the molten metal. The molten metal is circulated between the heating bath and the cooling bath so that a hottest fraction of the molten metal in the cooling bath is transferred to the heating bath and a coolest fraction of the molten metal in the heating bath is transferred to the cooling bath.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1988Date of Patent: July 31, 1990Assignee: Deutsche Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau GmbHInventor: Peter Muller
