  • Patent number: 5295380
Abstract: An edging mill for section rolling has a pair of horizontal rolls, each horizontal roll including a pair of axially spaced horizontal roll segments supported by driven horizontal roll shafts. Eccentric rings are disposed between the two horizontal roll segments making up each horizontal roll and are rotatably mounted on the horizontal roll shaft. The eccentric rings are eccentric to the horizontal rolls. Web-restraining ring rolls each comprise a pair of web-restraining roll segments rotatably fitted over the periphery of the eccentric rings concentrically thereto. A web-restraining ring roll positioning device rotates the eccentric rings. While the horizontal rolls roll the flange edges of the section, the web-restraining ring rolls hold the web of the section therebetween. The position of the web-restraining ring rolls with respect to the horizontal rolls changes with the rotating angle of the eccentric rings.

  • Patent number: 5152164
Abstract: A roll for a rolling mill capable of an on-line control of the width thereof. The roll includes a drive roll connected to a mill motor and a hollow driven roll driven by the drive roll while being axially slidable with respect to the drive roll. A screw shaft is screwed to the inside of the hollow driven roll in such a manner that an end-to-end contact of the driven roll with the drive roll is obtained. A clutch is provided for a selective locking of the screw shaft, which is unlocked during a normal rolling process, so that the screw shaft is rotated together with the drive roll and the driven roll by a rotation of the mill motor. When adjusting the roll width, the clutch is operated so that the screw shaft is locked, and as a result, a rotation of the mill motor causes a mutual axial movement of the drive roll and driven roll to thus adjust the roll width. A means is also provided for a centering of the roll at the pass line of the material, after the adjustment of the roll width.

The subject apparatus and method overcomes this problem by selectively forming a thickened edge along the edge of a thinner steel plate which can now be limited to the thickness required to withstand the stresses on the fabrication. The thickened edge is produced by forcing a plate supported by a table, by passing the plate through a forming apparatus comprised of a combination of rollers. • Patent number: 4229961
Abstract: A continuous mill has a plurality of passes arranged in series and formed by work rolls which are mounted on shafts secured to common chocks accommodated in housings. The chocks provided in the mill are equal in number to the workrolls forming a pass. Each of the chocks has two sides converging at an angle, and the shafts carrying the workrolls are cantilevered to each of said sides. The shafts secured to one side are offset relative to the shafts secured to another side so that the adjacent passes are spaced in closest possible proximity with one another; the angle between the sides of each chocks being equal to the divergence angle of the adjacent passes.

  • Patent number: 4178790
Abstract: A roll-through cold forming apparatus adapted to form simultaneously a plurality of either external or internal straight spline or gear type teeth on a cylindrical workpiece carried on a movable ram. In one embodiment the apparatus includes a plurality of radially disposed pivotally mounted teeth forming blades which are disposed around the axis of movement of a linearly movable ram, whereby when the ram moves in one direction past the teeth forming blades, the blades are engaged by an interference contact with the workpiece carried on the ram, and the teeth forming blades are moved over the external surface of the workpiece in a rolling contact action so as to displace the material of the workpiece between each tooth forming edge of each of the blades. The material on the external surface of the workpiece is formed around the radius of each of the tooth forming edges of each of the forming blades on a line with the configuration of each tooth forming edge.

  • Patent number: 4114415
Abstract: A profile plano-type knurling machine relates to metal pressure shaping machinery. It is more expedient to use the present invention for working splined shafts, polygonal parts and gears. In the present knurling machine a device for moving knurl rollers in the radial direction relative to the centers has tapered elements kinematically associated with the knurl rollers and pressure members whereas only one pressure member intended to provide the radial feed of the knurl rollers is installed on the fixed support member at the side of the bases of the tapered elements coaxially to the centers and adapted for actuating simultaneously all the tapered elements through an intermediate part located between said pressure member and the bases of the tapered elements. This technical solution provides for a considerable improvement of the machine efficiency and its reliability in operation as well as processing accuracy of the work pieces being machined.

  • Patent number: 3987657
Abstract: The invention relates to a rolling arrangement for rolling mills including means for continuously centering the rolls with respect to the product being rolled and for adjusting the pass defined by the rolls. A roll is mounted with its shaft on a cylindrical support which is displaceable within the frame of the rolling unit and comprises an outer threaded portion engaging with an annular threaded element whose rotation causes axial displacement of the support and of the shaft and the roll, thus allowing continuous centering thereof. Setting shims are provided between a cover of the structure supporting the roll and the frame of the rolling unit for adjustment of the pass defined by the rolls. Adjustment of the clearance of the two bearings supporting the roll shaft is obtainable by providing each of the outer rings of the bearings with the outer threaded portion and the threaded annular element and separately actuating the same.

  • Patent number: 3983733
Abstract: A die for performing the ironing process in the manufacture of drawn and ironed food or beverage cans. A number of rollers are mounted in a carriage to form a ring of suitable inner diameter to perform the desired amount of reduction in the thickness of a can mounted on a mating punch. Each roller has a concave peripheral surface which forms a small segment of the ring. The rollers have conical end surfaces which butt together closely at the inner diameter. On the outer side of the ring, the rollers bear on backer members. In one form of the invention the backer members are stationary strips and the carriage moves in the same direction as the can when the can passes through the die. In another form the carriage is stationary and the backer strips move in the opposite direction. In another form, the backer members are additional rollers mounted on bearings. In all cases the friction between the rollers and the can and the rollers and the backer members is primarily rolling friction.
