The speed (v) at which the strip is passed through the rolling mill is selected with the aim of ensuring that the strip has reached the set temperature (T*) by the time it is wound up. The strip is then wound off the downstream coiler (5), passed through the reverse rolling mill (1) with a second draught of at least 10% and wound up by the upstream coiler (4).

  • Patent number: 6026669
Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for the production of both discrete metal plate and coiled metal plate products. In a mill having at least two in-line reversing plate mill stands, a reheated slab can be rolled on a first reversing plate mill in several reversing flat passes. The rolled product can then be sent to a second in-line reversing plate mill for additional rolling followed by winding in a downstream coiler. In the present invention, while the rolled product is sent to the second reversing plate mill, a virgin reheated slab can be introduced and rolled on the first reversing plate mill in several reversing flat passes. This product, subsequent to a slab which is rolled and sent to the second reversing plate mill, can be sent upstream along runout tables for further processing in finishing equipment. When the first reversing plate mill is again clear of rolled product, another virgin reheated slab can be introduced to the first mill and the above process can be repeated.

After a third passage through the Steckel roll line, the feedstock is coiled up in an exit-side coiling device having two furnaces one atop the other, which serves as a storage device for the roughed strip. Simultaneously with the coiling of the first strip, a second strip is uncoiled from the storage device. The cropped front end of the second strip is welded to the cropped rear end of the already uncoiled roughed strip.

  • Patent number: 6014882
Abstract: A method of rolling out the ends of a coiled strip in a reversing rolling mill having reels disposed on both sides thereof minimizes a length of strip at the strip ends having a non-conforming thickness. A start of the strip is introduced into the roll gap without inlet side strip tension and without rolling force at the start of each reduction pass. The rolling force is then gradually increased. The inlet side strip tension is subsequently reduced substantially to zero at the end of each reduction pass while the strip end still connected to the uncoiling reel, such that the strip end passes tension-free completely through the rolling gap and is consequently reduced in thickness. An apparatus for carrying out the method on a reversing mill includes a control system which selectively controls, via regulating and adjusting devices, the inlet and outlet strip tensions and the rolling force in a manner dependent upon respective locations of the start and end of the strip.
